No other fantasy race is so often depicted going out to fight some big evil, fighting alongside other races, allying with other races (despite the arrogance). Or in some way maintaining order and balance, watching over the world, guarding ancient knowledge or important artifacts. No other fantasy race is so often involved in the world and being a major player (not only for the good of the world, I'll grant you that beforehand).
Sometimes they did more in the past, but then diminished (so that humans can be the protagonist race), and despite all this, they still continue to keep up the good fight.

Ironically enough, Tolkien’s elves don’t use words like “magic” and are closer to the “dwarves” (tech elves) or Dwemer in the Elder Scrolls, who similarly don’t use words like “magic” as true definitions for anything. It’s just a frame of reference, or a way of describing things, and their smiths and engineers are their equivalent of mages, and their scientists or scholars are their ‘arcane philosophers’, etc. To a Dwemer spells are just machine activators. Their star signs are renamed: the Automaton (the Apprentice), the Warmachine (the Atronach), the Mechanist (the Mage), and the Laboratory (the Ritual), etc.

Similar to how the modern day wizard is just the dabbling mad scientist, or some alien (the being piloting the UFO is going to transcend our laws/understanding of physics to be sure) sage, etc. The words change and the aesthetics shift, but all the essences are still there.

Alchemy and metallurgy, and artifice, are such staple tropes of wizards throughout history it’s kind of weird how dwarves are not the epitome of the wizardly race. The Jews were also seen as a race of wizards in antiquity. Smiths were viewed as a type of wizard at times for their lesser known, esoteric skillsets.

The one and only thing Feanor did which could be considered properly unjust was burning the boats, but did that not happen in the old lore (book of lost tales part 1 which includes the Solosimpi/Teleri allowing the Noldoli to leave and then turning to attack them with rocks and arrows once the Noldoli were in the boats) but in the later letters it is justified by the cowardice of Amras and all ultimately the fault of the valar for not helping out in what was also their own war and their own fault.

So you see, you might be able to fault Feanor on your interpretation of the burning of the ships, but in no way did he do wrong by giving the Solosimpi/Teleri what they were looking for. If anything, Feanor was good for holding back instead of unleashing the full fires of what the rest of the traitorous Eldar deserved.

I think the dwarves were done dirty in the lore by Tolkien with the balrog, seeing as elves slaughtered them by the score in the battle of the fall of Gondolin (book of lost tales part 2 if you want the detailed version of that battle), but since that is all we have to work with, then we must conclude that in Tolkien's lore, elves are far cooler than dwarves. The more you understand that, the more you understand the enmity between dwarves and elves in that world rising up from elves killing early hill dwarves like wild animals because they didn't know dwarves had their own consciousness and weren't just like orcs or deer to be hunted.

The downfall of elves is the sorts of things you see in elf threads, though. Morgoth killed all the cool elves and Mandos ensnared them in his dark prisons and lairs when rightfully they should have been allowed to go free once more. After that, the only elves left started to become more and more like the fantaslop androgynous elves you see in modern media. I push for high elves being clearly defined masters of magic and might in my game worlds, but rare and hidden to maintain their survival. An intact Noldor-style kingdom should make the players think they walked into Agartha/Hyperborea and thus it has to be as rare and elusive as those things are to stop elves from trivializing the game's encounters, fronts, and threats. Wood elves I'm not sure what to do with. I guess they can wander the woods and make forests safer when considering all the threats in the world, but overall, with their increased contact with the world, they probably have to be quite mundane to maintain the world balance. I also like to consider whether a Numenor/Atlantis civilization should be present, destroyed, or absent from my settings, but that is a human topic.
