The whole North Africa campaign. Excellent shitposting by Australians gave the Germans their first land defeat of the war (a feat they repeated on the Japanese months later). Monty showed he was more than just a hypeman and defence in depth with overlapping artillery arcs routed the fast tank assaults with close air support that had worked so well for the Germans in 40, 41.
If the Germans were hard done by in any metric, it was in being underresourced, like at a level that is politically suspicious... as thugh they didn't want the Desert Fox doing *too well* but that's just a half baked pet theory.

Everyday I wake up from a night of dreaming that I was a hussar in the Napoleonic war.
Is there a game that portrays, not big battles, but small scouting parties of Hussards? Scouting, counter scouting skirmishes, raiding small farms for forage, ravaging the local populaces daughters, all while looking dapper as fuck?

>Hussars
You know I'm quite the anglophile but really in the Napoleonic wars the French absolutely MOGGED the British in every way. French hussars were cool as hell, elite swashbucklers and womanizers who weren't afraid of death. British Hussars? Just regular ass light cavalry dudes.
How were French officers promoted? Based off merit and experience and bravery. How were British officers promoted? They purchased their commission and promotion was based off nobility and seniority. British were drilled with longer steps than the French, yet someone they French marched and advanced faster in literally every single battle they found the British.
It really is a shame the Rothschild wanted to depose Napoleon, the French could have been cool but the Jews had to go ruin it to this day

Rothschild didn't defeat the French at Talavera, Quatre Bras, Waterloo. The British and coalition did.
Their horses were also so poorly treated the British could detect cavalry regiments downwind because of rotting saddle sores.

>Mfw worked with Warlord™ Resin© today
Somehow they managed to combine all the flaws of metal and resin with no obvious benefits. The material feels very fragile. It's very light, feels like the mini is made out of foam. I assume no mold retooling was performed since mold lines are extremely visible.
To be fair, there are next to no warped or bent parts but if there were any I would be quite hesitant about straightening them up under hot water considering how fragile and easy to snap the material feels.

Their SPQR range was using Warlord Resin for minis that used to be cast in metal, apparently. I bought Caesarian Roman scorpion and Cavalry boxes for SPQR since I found an online store that had discount on them. I do believe they are still cast in metal if you buy them directly from Warlord under the Hail Caesar brand.

Later iterations of Sio have proven better but circa SPQR they were rough... I had some Numidian javelinmen and they were very flashy

But he's incorrect. ASODS basically uses Napoleonics as a desktop theme. There is really little going on beyond distinctions between foot and mounted and a few firearms and formations, but it essentially is just A Song of Blades and Heroes. Even with the lists, Chosen Men has more flavour, and a standard 400 point game is certainly not 100 figures or thereabouts. Eh Rommel constantly outran his supply lines and kinda refused to consider logistics properly. He could have been constructing oil pipelines from Tripoli or suchlike, but was just always obsessed with GOTTA GO FAST.
I read a lot about him in the desert campaign and the guy was borderline suicidal crazy at times.
>Decide to personally recon into enemy with a few officers and an armored car or two
>Recon at night, no support, just the general and like 10 staff in a few armored cars
>Takes ages trying to find how to get through the barbed wire on the front line
>Recon, but then can't find where to get back
>Have to camp out on the enemy side, within like 2km of an entire Allied armor division
>Somehow make it back in the morning.
A lot of the north Africa campaign reads like this - crazy stuff that he manages to get away with, often ending up surrounded behind enemy lines, but manages to somehow escape.
He pushed his men and machines to the absolute limit, but felt that logistics were 'someone elses problem'.

It has an extremely heavy focus on supply. Transporting it, capturing the enemy's, and using supplies for your attacks.
There's a Convoy system, where you purchase units based on your country's RP allocation plus the territories you control. Units you purchase appear in Convoy territories and once they move onto the map, can be interdicted by naval units.

Not super applicable to anything else but it did help me decide that I wanted to commit to this for the campaign rather than making up my own thing. Plus, saved me from printing out my own map and finding my own counters for units. I'll be playing the Brits in this one, but we've got at least one player for each country, even the French.

i've mentioned this a bit in the past but I've been helping organize an estate sale for a deceased wargame club member. hes one of our more eccentric boomers with an absurd collection. we've managed to sell about half the stuff in his garage but we learned this week that he also rented a storage locker and we looked inside it today. Hes got half of 6mm operation overlord in here. Just the gliders alone, we counted 2 bags he had and they each had 100 gliders in em, he had 10 bags of gliders total, so if the other bags are the same as the bags we counted, hes got 1000 gliders. And thats just the gliders, hes got similarly absurd numbers of landing ships, infantry, and armored vehicles. its incredibly impressive and autistic in my favorite kind of way but what the hell was he planning on doing with this? you'd need a 30 foot table or some shit. On the plus side, the club is going to have more 6mm terrain than we could ever want, but I've no idea how we'd manage to sell this or how much we should even list it on ebay for, and no one wants to count this shit. And even if we did count and list it all, who the hell would buy it? And if we gave it away for free? Who'd take it? Its so much stuff and 6mm WW2 is something very few people are interested in.

Have we peaked in terms of detail quality on 28mm historical miniatures? Perhaps the real question is, do we really need more when it comes to detail quality on 28mm minis?
I've been working with some recently released minis from Victrix and I already felt they are too detailed for my taste. I bought them for a skirmish gaming project so that's fine, but if I wanted to use them for a full scale army with 150-200 minis I would simply end up with a burnout.
It may be an unpopular opinion but this is where I would stop with the number and quality of details and chase for more historical accuracy instead.

Generally with 3rd ed the rules aren't as stiff. As long as you have a solid rifle platoon as your core, you'll be decent however you pick to theme it. Right now, the meta pick is spamming light tanks with autocannons, so people might get annoyed if you do that, unless it's in a historical context like a bunch of Panzer IIs in a blitzkrieg list. If everything else is Blitzkrieg appropriate, people will accept Panzer IIs

Germany had one style of winning a war and lacked the resource base to do it any other way. Rommel isn't that atypical really. They were basically all drilled to go fast and get creative and exploit every opportunity because if they don't take those risks and win in 3 months then they're gonna lose in 3 years.
When it works its stunning and incredible and seems so smart because arguably dumb risks happened to pay off. When it doesn't work(or rather works tremendously but still isn't enough) well now you're neck deep in Russia with no way out because these crazy bastards wouldn't take a negotiated peace if they had so much as a single siberian village left.

Does anybody know if the Hail Caesar Army Lists book differs in any way from the first edition that was split into two smaller supplements? Besides errata like the busted Han China list being fixed.
On anticipation of the Victrix Caesarian Romans being released in a few months, I've been reading Julius Caesars book, The Gallic Wars,.and holy fuck this guy was such a Chad.
>Helvetii are trying to cross the river Saône
>they are using little boats to ferry thousands of people across slowly a few at a time
>Caesar learns about this and immediately straps up and marches his legion out at midnight
>March all through the night and catch them by surprise
>kills everyone still left on this side of the river
>The remaining Helvetii say "thank God we are safe on this side of the river, it took up 20 days to cross, there is no way his army can reach us"
>Caesars men immediately construct a bridge and are over the river that same day

Yes, sure bro, a highly sparse agrarian society can support an army of that size. Nevermind the fact that it would take hundreds of carts to carry something like that, and that it would be completely useless.
I like the book, but you have to take everything with 2 kg of salt, guy is too self-aggrandizing. While Delbrück clearly has an agenda, I like his take on Caesar telling the other legions he'd face Ariovistus with the Xth legion alone -- it's because he was probably matched in terms of numbers against the Germans and he could actually take them with a single legion.

Also, how many pin markers and order dice are recommend? I'm assuming 15 order dice for each team and like 30(?) something pin markers.

Caesars battle against the Nervii might be the coolest battle in Gallic Wars, and the closest he ever became to losing to the Gauls.
>The Belgae attacked extremely swiftly and unexpectedly, completely catching the Romans off guard while they were busy digging trenches and foraging for materials.
>The Roman command didn't have time to issue commands to their troops or form real battle lines
>But the soldiers were all experienced veterans and formed quick rough formations on their own initiative
>The Belgae were on them so quickly they didn't have time to throw javelins, they immediately drew swords and fought at close range
>the Romans didn't even time to put on helmets or remove the covers from their shields
>all the Romans foraging and gathering materials came running back and rather than finding their unit they jumped into the first formation they saw
>the Romans were split up into several isolated groups, each completely isolated from the other and all in danger of being surrounded
>The Romans auxillary cavalry left to guard the baggage train, being mostly Gauls and some Numidians saw the Romans I'm such a desperate struggle and as seems to be typical of the auxiliary cavalry, tucked tail and fled the field
>one legion was in dire situation, moments away from being overrun, Caesar mentions every single centurion in that legion was fighting in the front and they were all killed or severely wounded down to the last centurion. One centurion named Publius Sextius Baculus was severely cut so many times they he was covered red in blood and could no longer stand, so leaned on his shield to keep fighting
>Caesar took a shield from one of the soldiers at the back of the formation and ran to the front and personally directly the men to reform and open ranks,.etc. which gave the men a second wind

>Now uphill behind the enemy he turned around and his legion saw the other Romans getting clobbered down below
>They charged back downhill and now attacked the barbarians from behind, completely changing the tide of battle
>all the other Romans rallied and won the day
This battle is cool as hell to me because is illustrates what made the Romans so dominate, and they is their indomitable Faustian spirit and extreme discipline and professionalism even in dire circumstances.

Before I start a project I tend to read up on the subject (this is usually how I get interested in a topic in the first place) and then I gather a godawfull amount of reference material. I use Blender and I start using a basic posable anatomical dolly to get a good pose and then I start working on the clothing etc. Reference is key for good results. In general you work from primitive shapes down to more refined/finished items, adjusting as you go. Sculpting digitally is quite forgiving as you can reorient and resize parts of the model throughout the process, so its easier to fix mistakes.
I started out with Blender guru's Donut tutorial series, great for learning the UI and the basics of Blender. Then I did some more hard surface modelling tutorials of his,and modelled some tanks and whatnot. Then I followed a sculpting tutorial by Grant Abbit. After that it was just trying it for myself and failing upwards.
>>96864063
Depends on the project, for more uniform periods (WW1 etc.) I tend to make a posable master dolly fully in uniform and refine it after posing. Otherwise I use a basic anatomical dolly and start from there. A nice bonus is that you can re use some assets throughout a project.
Generally I'd encourage everyone to try and sculpt their own minis, its super rewarding to paint up your home made miniatures and use them for games.

I'm gonna have you covered anon.
Pity I wont be covering the Anglo-Soviet Invasion of Iran, it's just not really 'fighty' enough (Iranians resisted in some places but mostly weren't very well organized and kinda just fell back or didn't defend in the first place. Also not much in the way of new equipment or interesting tactics that haven't already been covered in other theaters.
Aside from that, Ostfront 2nd ed will have:
Chinese
Japanese
US
British
Wehrmacht
Italians
Finns
Hungarians
Polish
Soviets
French
DAK
East African KAR / Colonials / Askari
All in one book.
Current progress is I have all the army lists researched and typed up, covering every major theater of WW2 from 1937 to 1945, and reflecting all the changes in troop quality and equipment, sometimes down to a 6 month period in granularity.
Currently playtesting the Pacific theater, and typing up a few more sections of the main rules (which are about 30 pages in total) and should be good to go in a month or so.

The Operation Torch campaign of Bolt Action has begun.
The British, after being pushed almost to the banks of the Nile and now fully reinforced by convoys from the Suez, are launching a multi-pronged counterattack into Mersa Matruh. Three different games will be played to decide the winner here.
The Italians have decided to establish a defensive line at Tobruk, laying minefields and bringing in forces to hold it.
Meanwhile, the Americans' initial assault on French North Africa has begun, and the Germans are scrambling to move forces into position to hold the west.
I've been thinking about dipping my toes into 15mm even though I've been hesitant for years. Do you guys know any 15mm manufacturers for late Republican Romans for my Caesar in Gaul project?
What do you think, would you do it in 15mm or 28mm? I've never seen a 15mm figure irl so I'm struggling to comprehend the size difference

Not him, but LLMs lie often. They are mimicking a conversation not acting like an encyclopedia. If it's a basic question like when was the war of 1812, it's reliable, but if it's something that requires research it's hit or miss. I usually as in incognito mode so it would rely on your past conversations. And I ask it 2 or 3 times. If I get the same response it's probably correct.
But even when it gives your sources, you need to check those a. really exist and b. actually reference what's being discussed. Also if you say "that's wrong" if it was just making stuff up it will say "you're absolutely right" then make up something else. Rarely will it say it doesn't know.
It's still amazing, and it's only in it's infancy, if LLMs are indeed going to scale up and not plateau around where they are now. But don't just assume it's right.

ChatGPT does have a "Research Mode" you can activate which does a pretty decent job. It will search the internet for the information you want, spend like 15 minutes collecting data, then give a report, with source links that you can click on and verify.
I've found it pretty useful for grabbing obscure data from the internet, or collating large amounts of data that would be onerous to do manually. Obviously you want to double check it's work though, because in the end, it is just joining words together in a way it thinks is correct, and doesn't have 'knowledge' of anything.

Personally, I'm completely infatuated with 15mm. Significantly cheaper than 28mm, makes the scales of most wargames work significantly better, and terrain, in my mind, looks better at that scale as well.

What was your biggest 28mm project ever? Have you managed to finish it?
I just finished to assemble a second batch of 40 phalangites for my Successors army and I still have 48 more to build, with 32 Silver Shields on top of that. I want to add 12 light cavalrymen, 24 slingers and a war elephant or two to this mix in the future.
I like the look of all minis I got for this project, I know it will be fun to play mirror matches with my girlfriend but I can sense the burnout waiting for me just around the corner. I don't want to switch to any other project for a break because I have no discipline and I know I simply won't come back to my Macedonian boys if I put them on a shelf now.

> 2B9 Vasilek mortar
> more than one SPG-9 team that's decent quality (found one good one on cults, but I don't want to just copy/paste the same single model)
> snipers/marksmen that aren't just WWII sculpts (I've gotten a couple leads on this, at least, but they're all STLs so checking for any other options first)

So, funnily enough I'm actually white and have no personal connections to India at all. When I started this army I included a squad each of generic white brits, scots, and hindus, with plans to add south africans, australians, etc to produce a cross section of the 8th Army (ignoring how it was split up by origin at the divisional level), but when I posted the first few pictures here, some guy had an absolute meltdown over the presence of the turbans. Ironically, that got me interested in reading more about the British Indian Army, and that plus picrel had me decide to commit to being a bit more accurate and field soldiers from a specific Indian division instead of just randomly throwing the races together.
Also, it's funny how people still have meltdowns over the mere concept of Indians.

Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

British beat a combined German/Italian force. Both Italian tanks were destroyed for the loss of one Matilda II.
At one point, the Tiger was about to round a corner and open up on my infantry, so I drove an Armored Carrier in front of it. Tiger went for a ram and somehow lost, getting its turret jammed in exchange for damaging the carrier's engine. My squad of Gurkhas(commando rules) did well, chopped up a German command squad, italian officer, and an anti tank gun crew. The Axis destroyed most of my SAS jeeps and LRDG trucks and wiped two small Commando squads who didn't accomplish anything, and the Italian artillery observer was somehow invincible.
Fun game.

>Excellent shitposting by Australians gave the Germans their first land defeat of the war (a feat they repeated on the Japanese months later). Monty showed he was more than just a hypeman and defence in depth with overlapping artillery arcs routed the fast tank assaults with close air support that had worked so well for the Germans in 40, 41
Point of order: Tobruk was the Australian 9th. Division under command of Morshead, not Montgomery. It was Morshead that set up the defence in depth, drilled his men relentlessly, and set deliberate ’weak points’ in the defensive line that funneled German attackers into highly efficient kill zones. Monty didn’t arrive with the 8th Army until roughly eight months after Tobruk had already shattered the myth of German invincibility and drained their resources to the point of rendering the German NA campaign a foregone conclusion. Morshead also crushed the Germans at second Alamein, three months after Monty arrived.
Everything Monty did, Morshead did just as well if not better. It’s a shame that Morshead has been forced into Monty’s shadow but we can’t have the damned colonials showing up the real officers, what? What? Haw-haw!

You can't understand a ChatGPT response if you don't know the exact question asked.
Furthermore, you can find tons of these ridiculous rankings on the internet, created by humans.
In fact, it's certainly from these rankings that your AI drew upon to generate its own ranking.
These rankings are not 'objective' and 'scientific' but highly subjective and often based on trivial criteria and clichés.
Rommel enjoys a strong aura in popular culture; his reputation far exceeds his actual role, and he is undoubtedly the most famous general of World War II.
His name must be mentioned countless times on the internet, which may explain why he was chosen by the AI.
Similarly, ChatGPT certainly noted that Grant defeated Lee.
Ranking generals from the same war is a very complicated and, above all, highly biased exercise, but doing it for the entire history of humanity is simply absurd and pointless.
>>96919425
pretty much this.
I've tested it in Copilot (because it shows the sauce in the answer directly), and you can see it gives "HistoryNet" and similar pages.
This was my question:
"Can you please generate a list of the greatest generals of human history?"
And here is your "main" source:
https://www.historynet.com/top-100-greatest-generals-of-all-time
I'm sure, with a more refined prompt, the answer can be deeper and more detailed, but a simple question like this gives you nothing more than a sloppy overview of which generals are mentioned a lot online, but you still would have to dig deeper yourself if you want to know more.

Snipers, mortars and arty. Or just bring LRDG with their jeeps covered in MG’s and slaughter everything.
You can also bring a ‘sacrificial’ distraction Carnifex type unit to draw its fire (always move it last, go Down as soon as they draw its fire). If he’s smart and he knows what you’re doing this may not work.
Do you guys know any wargame with absolute scale a.k.a miniatures, ground and terrain scale are all the same and consistant? 1mm in height equals 1mm in length?
I'm looking for system like this in order to get into 2mm wargaming, probably Napoleonic. I'm tired of "one miniature represents 200 man" bullshit and want to play real 1:1 wargames where you can judge distances and scale purely by just seeing the table
I cannot find anything on the internet regarding rules that cover this sort of gaming.

Anything 6-15mm. 15mm is actually much smaller than you think of you're used to 28mm.
Some dude said Napoleonics, but honestly that's not the best because battlefields stretched across many miles, so ancient battles are best in that regard because the footprint was smaller generally, formations were smaller and maneuver was much less dynamic than the shit Napoleon pulled. If you have to go black powder era I would do French and Indian War since engagements were fairly small compared to stuff in Europe, some of the bigger battles had less than 1000 dudes combined total
2mm is just shit to be honest, at this point you aren't using miniatures, it's essentially a token. So why even bother with miniature wargaming? Just play hex and chit or a map based campaign with tokens at this point.

It sort of depends. Smaller scales obviously work better, but 15mm even up to WW2 can work in my opinion. While the ground scale doesn't fit, it fits at a tactical level, by which I mean that terrain (including the regular undulations of a landscape) often put a hard cap on ranges anyway, and actions at maximum range were quite rare up into the modern period. The limited weapon range for SMGs in Chain of Command, for example, are a "hard cap limit" of a certain distance, but that's more to represent the limited sights of the period and the fact that those armed with such weapons were often too busy leading at all but very close quarters to be firing their own weapons rather than directing fire.
It also depends on the scale of engagement. Its hard to do a 1-1 Brigade scale action even at 6mm, but Platoon or company is much more feasible
