Does the Chantry count? Otherwise no. The ST quickly realize I was a bit too self motivated & would be fine without needing to call in the calvary. The other players got a few NPCs here & there to be friends with & help them out in a pinch. Meanwhile my Tremere was creating webs of blackmail & bloodbonds the hard way. Toreador get all the luck

Pentax is trying to make totems sigils to create spirits for corporations. That way, if they can create corporate spirits they can feed it to grow the company. Imagine a merger but spiritually represented by a corporation spirit devouring a lesser business spirit.

Does it make sense for a Son of Aether to have a sort of psychic bent? Like he believes the soul is the key & while humans use tools, ultimately those tools can be discarded as we approach godhood & channel the aether by will alone? So after a year of trying to convince my GM and group to give WoD another try, I finally managed to get everyone excited about giving Changing Breeds (20th Anniversary) a try; but now we've already hit a problem.
One of the players wants to play a suchid Mokole who's at least 10 years past her first change; but another player is insisting that, even after a decade, she'd still be struggling to speak or use toilet paper properly. Can anyone confirm or refute this?

Lupus wolves struggle to learn human language and how to interact with human society, but you can overcome such things with merits at character gen. It really depends on where our lizard grew up. I'd say that it's not a major concern, so long as the ST picks which merits the player needs to buy at character gen.

At our table we're (almost) all GMs at various points of time and/or within the group or with other people.

What do you think about a monthly or so ST rotation of splats, all in a loose-ish continuity (aka we adapt our ST time to what has happened while we were players during other rotations but we don't prepare stuff together beforehand and each ST is independent).

I think we can manage Changeling (Lost, tho, not Dreaming even if the rest would be oWod), Werewolf, Vampire, Hunter and Mage, maybe with a ST douple-upping one because there's one system more than there are STs.

The fourth dot specifically notes that it ISN'T affecting their life pattern, it's a teehee entropy thing. Entropy does not directly touch their life pattern it's affecting entropy to just affect their life. Don't get mad at me, get mad at the rules.

entropy users can cause heart attacks by looking at people without the life sphere, though without life they can't make the bad luck follow the person.

Basically, yes. You can affect people/objects directly with entropy alone, but you need <appropriate sphere 3> to stick it to them so it follows them around without you present.

With Entropy 3, you can jam the gun of the thug trying to mug you, but his gun starts working when he runs away.

With Entropy 3/Matter 3, that gun will jam for everyone for a long time

With Entropy 3/Life 3, every gun that thug picks up will jam

etc

The impression I always got is that a writer fell for the "there's no such thing as a clever Brujah they are all just angry retards" meme and wrote the True Brujah as a superior, improved Brujah without realising that the Idealists already exist.

This is a big issue with White Wolf, a lot of the Second Edition and especially Revised writers seemed to fall for the complaints that the players made about topics that they were not the original writers of, and leaped to fix them.

If they had developed the spiritual side more than just alternatives to humanity it'd at least make more sense. What with the Tzimisce and Lasombra presence it'd probably just be fitting to change the ecclesiarch trappings to aristocratic ones. Ducti and Prisci could be knights. Bishops swap to Counts while archbishops are Marquess, or Margrave. Cardinals are dukes and the regent is archduke

It would make more sense to just have a modified camarilla hierarchy in terms of it being borrowed aristocratic titles, it would also be very ironic which is fitting.
It would also be easier to bridge the gap since you can just gloss over the fact that it was all the lasombra and tzimisce who did not hold rank and territory who joined the sabbat by simply stating that they were rebelling to get that stuff themselves not out of any actual principles.

It's just to cover their bases. It's all down to the ST in the end. But you're right. It's important to note that the language merit is specifically for learned languages in excess of your default ones. Now, in W20 the book recommends you handwave certain things, but if the ST wants you to provide an actual on-paper reason your lizard can speak English and know what a computer is, it's right there for you. It would be enough to shut up that other player, certainly.

You can think of merits brought with freebie points as representative of the character's experiences between their first change and rite of passage? That's a good way to think about it.

I'm glad I don't have this flavor of autism. Aping the church in a mocking manner fits the Sabbat well. The Sabbat accuses the Camarilla of being the highfalutin aristocrats, so noble titles are immediately out of the question but there's only so many mortal terms to steal in the year 1500.

Not to mention, the Lasombra were the most heavily invested in the catholic church as an institution, and it fits the Sabbat's more religiously derived power. The Code of Milan wasn't around when the Sabbat was forming, and before the addenda and the purchase pact (much later additions) it was so vague in what it actually said that it was 90% up to interpretation. Since the Sabbat has to pretend it isn't that autocratic, it makes sense why it would try to define things in terms of dioceses rather than proper feudal holdings. You can also have a cardinal for a region that has very little Sabbat presence, as they're more like regional overseers rather than kings. As authoritarian and tyrannical as the Sabbat often are in practice, their entire structure is filled with pseudo-democratic and libertarian trappings. A religious basis for government ensures that there is always at least one person above any temporal ruler. Thus, Noddism is the one thing that even semi-unifies the Sabbat, and it's worth noting that the factions within it that are least likely to respect Noddism are the least likely to give a damn about the hierarchy. The Black Hand and their fifth columnist tendencies. Nomad Packs.

Lastly and most practically, use of aristocratic titles just wouldn't fly with their base. However many self-interested elders they have, their base, especially at the time of their founding, were deranged apocalyptists who wanted to destroy the existing vampire hierarchies, nearly all of whom used feudal or even more archaic terms.

It's possibly the only 'of Darkness' setting that has a very grim premise but is surprisingly pleasant and uplifting in play. Your character has died and the death was likely very unpleasant and they have wrestle with being bound to a geist, but a typical chronicle is going to have lots of little moments of joy and catharsis and reconnecting with humanity and helping others overcome the trauma of their passing and generally coming to terms with death as a natural and healthy part of life.

Of course it can be played in a more depressing and dour fashion if you want to play it that way, but the game lends itself to a positive outlook on death rather than a negative one, heavily inspired by Día de Muertos.

Swansong is buggy as hell and very in your face about it being V5. Admittedly, it's also a much better adaptation of a tabletop session than most other things. If you like DE or Planescape, Swangsong is in that vein of CRPG

Parliament to Night Road, definitely. Swansong's your choice. Reckoning is only if you really liked Shadows, and then I suggest playing Coteries of New York. If after that you still want more New York get Reckoning.

>Get a group of players
>Allow one player, who is the one who got me into RPGs, to play a Slasher, since I trusted his ability to control himself
>We figured out a middle ground for his murderhobo
>Get to the campaign
>my red herrings work without a hitch, players make assumptions based on knowing me and finding out there's a suspicious church and deep ones
>finally unmask the Monster
>Fully stat it, intend to follow the rules and data I gave it
>Intention is to have it show up, murder a guy, mutilate the introductory NPC so he'd get ghoul'd, then get exposed to his weakness(Water) and run off, so the PCs would have to figure out a way to kill him, and I could also establish he was working for a vampire
>Instead, the PCs save the introductory NPC
>Then the party Slasher is able to chase after the monster after I made the mistake of describing a fire escape when setting up the Water
>Slasher chases after the Mask Slasher
>Gets a series of crits
>kills the Slasher immediately
>Have to hamfist in that he was working for a vampire afterward
>hit full writer's block as I had no idea how to do the sequel campaign, tracking down the vampire mastermind
>talking to the Slasher PC, mention I had all this lore written up for the Mask Slasher before he went crazy
>he asks why not have the party start the investigation, trying to investigate him
>mfw it was literally that simple

Anyone have any suggestions for possible encounters? Right now, they have the lead that he was working for a vampire called 'the baron', they've met the vampire in disguise(the party doesn't know), and they know the Deep Ones are just denizens of the area who are mostly super sus because their kind have been getting murdered en masse...and now the party has saved them.

my first ever experience with an RPG was in Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy. I played a self-flagellating psyker who spent most of his life in a church and fully hated himself for his curse. He only joined up with the inquisition because 'obviously, you have to do what the servants of the emperor demand', and I spent the entire game as a hella zealous dude who had a huge admiration hardon for the servants of the God-Emperor, like the Astra Militarum or *gasp* The Adeptus Astartes.

Him learning to temper his zealousness was a hell of a lot of fun, and by the end of the campaign, he ended up going face to face with a daemon prince alone since the rest of the party was failing fear checks or was possessed by said Daemon Prince.

They are everything vampires try to cope and deny about themselves. Vampires are blood-drinking undead monsters that prey on the living, but they pretend at humanity and civilization. Strix hate that, and hate vampires for their unwillingness to embrace what they truly are. They also hate vampires for being corporeal and more alive than them (things largely denied to the Strix) but the anger at their inherently contradictory existence is also a big element of it. Vampires fear the Strix not (just) because of their malicious talent for sowing chaos and discord, but because they're a reminder of what all vampires are at their core. When vampires get too comfortable, too complacent, too civilized, too big for their britches, when they start to forget what monsters they truly are... that is when Strix arrive to topple their house of cards, rip their feeble mask of humanity away and forcibly bring them down to their roots. The Strix are chaos, entropy, anomy, atavism. They are the proverbial Heart of Darkness.

How the hell did your PC 1v1 a Mask Slasher? I thought their whole thing was they only ever take one damage at a time from conventional attacks; you need to environmental kill them.

Anyway, for encounter suggestions:
>If you want something to draw the cell's attention away for a bit and possibly drive a wedge between them and the part fishmen, have people go missing at sea in the area. Boats vanishing, individuals going over the side at the night. It's an entirely unrelated sea monster, base it on any from local legend if there is any. I'd recommend at some point throwing entirely unrelated to the main plot monsters at them, it's not only a fun break, but it helps reinforce that they're in a messy world riddled with monsters.

>Keep the vampire active. They lost their last heavy, who was evidently insufficient to task. Do they look for a new elite supernatural thug, or do they decide that quantity has its own quality? In the case of the latter, a different ghoul or ghoul/s engaged in something less immediately related to depopulating the village, but still integral to the vampire's plans. Could be as mundane as drug smuggling.

>Hauntings. The Mask killed some people rather horribly before the PCs intervened. Maybe one or two has stuck around as a ghost, unable to avenge their own killing and losing their damn minds. PCs need to put them to rest before they drag more innocents to their deaths.

I had a built in weakness for it, where if the slasher got doused in a lot of water, he'd be weakened. The plan was, they'd have to figure out a way to trap him, then douse him, and beat him. Instead, the PC chased him on foot as he walked on walls and leaped across gaps thanks to crits on the chase, threw a brick to make him fall off a building, then beat him to death while he had him pinned.

his signature weapon is a crowbar, so that's what he used once the monster was pinned.

And yeah, that's basically what happened. The rest of the party both knew the PC was kind of...creepy, but didn't know to the extent when he sprinted after a guy who had just impaled a deep one and run off, and viciously beat him to death on the ground.

We'd come to an agreement that while he was a murderer, he didn't have supernatural powers yet since he hadn't killed an innocent(through coincidence, his first victim was a monster). I let him have some of the slasher-exclusive upgrades, he has like 2 humanity, and the moment he kills an innocent on purpose, he'll become an actual slasher and an NPC.

Can anybody give me a qrd on that?

Because reading up my end I'm immediately finding pretty extensive differences:

>Grognard systems (HtR and W20) that we're already playing
Success at 6, subract 1s, botches, exploding 10s with specialization

>CtL that I wish to run
Success at 8, no 1s, no botches, default exploding 10s, specializations give +1 die

Not planning to mix splats but I wonder if that could be a problem in the long run.
Although, if you think of it, a different, more forgiving, possibly more "cinematic" (swings of luck with exploding 10s) outcomes might not be too out of place as the designated Changeling system since changeling are sort of self-determined narrative creatures, the crunch might as well be interpreted as them bending fortunes around them.

It doesn't help that the ST considers combat a new scene so that the Razor Claws that you sharpened when you entered the fomor-infested house suddenly gets dull as soon as you roll initiative, better lose another turn and spend another Rage.

I'm new to WtA (W20) but it is me or not postponing Rage action at the end of initiative, even with the understandable goal of simplifying combat instead of basically running inititive twice (thrice if you count declaring), completely fucks up any sort of balance during a fight?

I'm the Ahroun with +10 baseline, I just frontload Rage and maybe split 1 die, nothing will be left of you by the time it's your turn and I have hit you you five times, and even if you're lucky enough good luck accomplishing anything while barely standing.

Sure a ST can make an enemy however they want and just pump them full of health levels (whatever the equivalent is for spirits or fomori) but whenever is woof vs woof (so basically anything BSD-related) everything becomes either immediately trivial or you just immediately die and can't do anything about it.

Is it still a game, and WELL YOU'RE DEAD NO YOU COULDN'T HAVE DONE ANYTHING for something that is supposed to be at the core of the game loop (beating up BSDs and the occasional woof infighting) is peculiarly unfun because either everything always comes apart in your hands before they can react (which is cool the first couple times than gets boring) or you just die because you lost initiative.

Of course going first helps, but frontloading everything in one go for simplicity's sake skews things so that they are waaaaaaaaaay one sided with literally no possible counter (also because you can't even dodge because you should have declared it).

Let's assume all punches hit and do 1 level of damage:
> If you split once + 3 rage actions and frontload everything, you hit five times and do five damage, then it's the other guy's turn who's maimed and can't do shit, tough shit, fight's over at the first initiative tick
> You attack twice tanks to splitting, then the guy is somewhat hurt but can still act conceivably well, even if on the backfoot, then it's alternating Rage actions while you both get progressively more fucked up but still have agency to adjust or react

I love the Weaver to bits and shit concerning the Weaver appeals to me more than any other part of the World of Darknesss. The Weaver is my favourite aspect of the setting.

However, I also acknowledge that the Weaver is an antagonist force and that the stasis that she seeks to accomplish will either accidentally kill everything, turn it into a dystopian cyberpunk hellscape devoid of magic, or calcify reality when she achieves her idea of perfection at long last and existence is so monotonous and rhythmic that every moment is identical to the last and time ceases to have any meaning at all. She is insane and if she wins, it is the end of imagination and liberty at best and it is the end of everything at worst.

So I balk at the people who treat the Weaver like a benevolent, protective, doting dommy mommy and the patron spirit of humanity. She is anything but that. Humanity is her eternal project, which she is constantly optimising every last iota of liberty and independent thought out of. She will not stop until every human's existence is cyclical, identical, everlasting slop and life becomes utterly meaningless. She is not our mother. She is not our friend. She is demented and she is terrifying and she is on the verge of bringing about a future just as nightmarish as any Apocalypse that the Wyrm might inflict on Gaia. She is the adversary.

Sure, but they roll an absurdely high amount of dice (because any additional success on hitting transfers to wounding) and soaking can't really up with the sheer volume if you just deal all of them all at the same time.

Look, I'm not arguing that you shouldn't get hurt if you go second.

My point is that having the whole action economy discharge in one go, while it tecnically doesn't do anything that you weren't supposed to be able to do anyway, makes combat (which is the core of the system) pretty much not fun.

Perhaps this applies to the Wyrm as well, though the madness of the Wyrm is unique and very different to that of the Weaver. The nature of the Apocalypse that the Wyrm seeks to bring about is very different to the Apocalypse of the Weaver as well, with different mechanisms that shall bring them about.

However, this is not the case for the Wyld. The Wyld has not lost its mind and it remains true to its function without any higher purpose born of insanity. The Wyrm longs for the destruction of all things, the Weaver longs for a perfect and static universe, but the Wyld does not long to fill the universe with life and matter and energy until it collapses under its own weight. The Wyld is the one and only specimen of the Triat that does what it is meant to do and doesn't try to stack the deck in its favour to try and bring about its victory condition, because it doesn't have a victory condition. As for the Weaver and the Wyrm, their victory conditions are very much bad for the Tellurian.

In Werewolf the Apocalypse, the Triat are not mindless forces. The Wyld might be mindless, but it's still not a force. They aren't the Metaphysical Trinity of Mage the Ascension. They are spirits, they are entities and two of them are utterly insane and seek to bring about bad endings for all of existence. While I wouldn't call her evil, I have no compunction about calling the Weaver bad, because her ultimate goal is very bad for the Tellurian. I have no compunction about calling the Wyrm bad AND evil, because the majority of his heads want to inflict as much as suffering and pain as possible with the Apocalypse, which is just as bad for the Tellurian.

>tl;dr
I disagree with the approach of treating the Triat like fundamental forces or laws of physics. They're spirit-gods and two of them are fucked in the head in a way that's bad for everyone.

Except it turns out that the shoe factory belongs to Blackest Soles, a fashion subsidiary of Pentex focused on footwear. Their shoes are made out of the leather of tortured animals and are infused with spiritual suffering, that leaves tracks of the Wyrm's taint wherever the wearers of these shoes wander.

But sabotaging the shoe factory isn't going to do anything other than leave a whole lot of people without jobs, while Blackest Soles just opens up a new factory in another town on the other side of the country, that will be pumping out even more tainted footwear within a year. So it's the responsibility of the werewolves to see to it that the people of the town are given new opportunities to work, that are more constructive and don't serve the purposes of the Wyrm. This is where the social butterfly tribes like the Glass Walkers and Children of Gaia and Shadow Lords and Silver Fangs enter the equation.

Yes, but it isn't actively trying to make that happen. It's not fighting for absolute supremacy unlike the other two, it's just doing its job and unless it somehow goes bat shit crazy, it will always just do its job. This means that the chance of it being the only thing left is basically zero.

Meanwhile, the Weaver and the Wyrm are both gunning for their bad endings where they're the ones in charge and/or the only ones left, because they're both already bat shit insane and they're both already dangerously close to achieving their goals, hence the impending Apocalypse.

Some big unveiling was happening so quite a few middle managers and lobbyists were in the shopping center. Sucking each other off while their spouses and kids shopped.
Pentex security was also rather jaded about how violent and gorey Black friday shopping got, so they didn't register body parts flying as being too odd until blood splashed them.
The resultant fallout, more from politicians looking for blame and answers alongside upper management, turned the stumble into a hobbled walk that landed with a face plant.
Additionally the discovery that none of the middle managers backed up what they were working on caused things to get flung into the trash as they went back to the drawing board. On top of that there was an unattached Nephandi gang passing through that proceeded to beat themselves off over a 'sacrifice' well done that got credited for the shoddy sigils discovered in the shopping center.

Back in the ancient days of Pangaea, when the border world between material and spirit was weaker, Father Wolf patrolled the border and maintained the balance. He fell in love with Luna, and their children, the Uratha, followed in his ways using gifts from their mother.

However, he grew old and weak, and could not perform his duties anymore, so most of his children got together and granted him an honorable death. Luna was not happy about this, so she cursed them and weakened their powers and made them weak to Silver. The ones who had honor swore to her that they and their kind would forever perform Father Wolf's Duty, and she lessened the curse upon them.

Those without honor bayed that they had not helped, that they should not be cursed, but also refused the Duty, and the codes of honor of the Uratha. They had the full curse left upon them, and called themselves the Pure, and foolishly believe that if they break the Balanceit would mean a return to the halcyon days of Pangaea.

I actually think Forsaken is really cool, I wish it had kept some of the major spirits of Apoc as godlike Spirits but that's a minor complaint. (Bale Hounds/Maeljin are neat but I wouldn't mind a full blown Wyrm Celestine/Illusahim).

Forsaken does have a lot to like. It does a better job of capturing the "werewolf" feel without abandoning the spirit warrior conceit. The new enemies it adds are all really interesting. Its view of Spirits and the animistic world is more neutral, and it can encourage players to come up with their own conclusions about the world of spirit. It doubles down on the pack, teamwork stuff. The Sacred Hunt is very flavorful and can all but seal the doom of the character who is on the receiving end of that ritual. Each form has genuine strengths and weaknesses that encourages players to use all five, and warform has enough drawbacks that it isn't always the best response in a fight. It's still a very good response though, and it has merits that let you fully spec into one form. Rather than dervishes of blending claws (nWoD/CofD moved away from easy access to multi-attack and aggravated damage), Forsaken wolves feel a lot more horror movie monster, where they can shrug off anything but silver bullets or an overwhelming cavalcade of conventional damage (think 5+ shooters or a full-blown angry mob), especially in warform. Makes them more engaging to fight than Apoc wolves, which take the already rocket-taggy oWoD combat to a whole other level. This is not to say that Forsaken wolves can't be melee blenders, but it feels like they have more ways to build them.

It's not perfect, I'm a nitpicker through and through. It uses a lot of nonsense spirit words, but more importantly when it doesn't, it uses fairly dated if not outright inaccurate terminology like Pangaea. 1e bought into the "Alpha wolf dynamic" stuff that was popular at the time.

Choose either a city you're familiar with or would want to research anyway. Can be a shithole, can be nice, pretty much every city these days (and being entirely fair, for most of human history) has a shitty part of town. If you're a first timer, pick a less important city so you can keep the scale and stakes a bit more manageable.

You can read the official lore (if there is any) if you want some inspiration, but do not feel obligated to use any of it. If you do use any of it, feel free to modify it to your liking. This piece of advice is paraphrasing original White Wolf themselves by the way, metaplotfags can kick rocks.

Tremere, the mage, is a sore loser of the highest order Anyway, specifically for v5, it's cause the writers took the Tremere hate literally and rammed them into the ground with the thinnest reasoning possible.
Before that it was mostly just Tremere, Goratrix, and Etrius being the three stooges while everyone else did worthwhile things.

The Tremere appeared out of nowhere & quickly took control of Kindred society, out vampire-ing the vampires so fucking hard it's hilarious. Now everyone follows their rules since they helped found the Camarilla. I don't know which Clan got cucked or fucked the worst. Tzimisce because they stole his blood, only to turn around & them and Nosferatu and Gangrels by the dozens to make the iron Gargoyle slaves, Salubri who went from healers to villains & nearly eradicated all under Tremere propaganda, or Ventrue who used to be the rulers but now are beholden to the Tremere's Camarilla.

How pathetic are the other Clans that the Tremere can fuck each & every other Clan over, several times, enough that it should have earned them a kindred society wide kill on sight order, but they end up sucking Tremere cock instead? The Tremere step on to everyone's toes, they can do every other clans schtick just as well, if not better using blood sorcery. They even stole Necromancy secrets, & some even have innate Visicitude. The Tremere are the best kindred & they shouldn't even be there.

A Path of Conjuring Tremere with a ritual, can drop a Buick sized amount of silver onto a werewolf's head out of nowhere like a looney tunes skit. He can make it a simple cage, or a giant spike, or any other shape & form he wants. Not much a werewolf can do about that.

Or. Movement of the Mind to lift them into the air, Path of Transmutation to make a nearby tree insubstancial, move Garou to the tree & make it solid again. Or similar with a large chunk of silver.

Or Focused Mind plus Path of Blood & drain gallons of blood out of them dual casting Theft of Vitae or boil their blood double time, all while artificially making yourself a gen 4 with huge stat pools you can now power using all that blood you're ripping out of the werewolf

Why? Bats are cooler than wolves.
