I'm afraid that resurgence will be just as much of a nostalgia washed caricature as the shit old people watch today about the 60s or 70s. People on the right will talk abou something like lotr as if it was painting a picture of some perfect white utopia, which is missing the point. Lotr as written by tolkien is a gritty, violent, backstabbing world set in pseudo-england that portrays that vast majority of men, hobbits, elves, and dwarves as selfish, weak people who have all but destroyed their world through complacency. Most of original fantasy settings and the stuff from the 80s/90s was dark, dirty, and full of shitbags.

Magic had originally been portraying a similarly gritty and weird setting up until a decade or so ago. Cards now are too clean. EVERYTHING is too clean. ATLA and FF cards have all the grit of a new iphone. I just don't believe any resurgence will be any better.

>Lotr as written by tolkien is a gritty, violent, backstabbing world set in pseudo-england that portrays that vast majority of men, hobbits, elves, and dwarves as selfish, weak people who have all but destroyed their world through complacency
What the fuck is this take? Basically everything bad that happens in LotR is due to external corrupting forces, namely the supernatural influence of Sauron or his proxies. The darkness in the heart of man is there for them to exploit, yes, but the prevailing stance is that men are basically decent unless corrupted or misled.
Now if you want to talk about the Silmarillion and elvish bullshit, that's a bit more complicated, although still most things are instigated by Morgoth or his proxies at the end of the day.

The companions were terribly designed with no specific environment in mind, other than to push a commander-like mechanic into non commander formats. Ironically, Lutri, as weak as it is, also got banned the earliest due to commander. The other ones have way less restriction and more immediate or recurring value.

because it appeals to a specific type of player who wants to engage with the deckbuilding challenge of making a singleton deck in a environment where you'd never consider doing that on purpose
lutri isn't worth running a singleton deck from a power level perspective, but the fact that lutri exists encourages people to play a singleton deck

Shit Fighter 6 has massive problems and has divided the community in a big way. Ironically it has a very similar problem to what Magic is going through with new mechanics and characters making the gameplay extremely linear and shitty.
I doubt anyone here cares but seeing this is retard trying to use Shit Fighter 6 to defend UB is pathetic because THE SAME SHIT IS IN FIGHTING GAMES. There is crossover shit all over fighting games too and it SUCKS.

Anonymous No.96872269 [Report] >>96874256

Apparently. It's more of a broad "yeah if investigate feels flavourfully wrong we won't use it" but it's long-standing that investigate is considered a mistake because other artifact tokens don't have dedicated words for making them. And the only real reason they didn't change it was because of Erdwall Illuminator which if changed to "whenever you make a Clue for the first time each turn, make another one" would be not EXACTLY the same (batched creations would now affect it) but honestly who cares.

I'm really fucking discouraged by the current state of standard. It feels like it wasn't too long ago that different deck archetypes could at least survive in standard. Right now, if your deck doesn't have some crazy combo to goldfish a win on turn 4, you're completely fucked. We've seen aggro heavy metas, but this is insane for a format that should be the slowest official constructed format.

Like I can't take a deck brew seriously if it doesn't have a way to slam the door shut on a game by turn 4. Even if you live past turn 4 you're dead if you haven't completed your gameplan.

Earthbending is literally taking existing rock and earth and hurling it at people, they can't generate earth themselves (the only people who can create their element even when it's not present are firebenders) so I think it fits fine. You literally pick up a mountain and hurl it at somebody, then if they smash it you gather it back up tapped as a land.

Firebending would actually be 10/10 flavor if Mana Burn still existed as a concept. Firebenders can generate fire even without it present in the environment, and are the most directly powerful since they can even do shit like shoot lightning, but they don't get any natural fire resistance to their bodies so if they don't control it properly they can easily end up burned or even die practicing.

Generating like 15 mana with Firebending and Sozin's Comet, only being able to spend like 12 of it and getting burned for 3 damage because you couldn't control your Firebending properly would be super on theme. But they removed mana burn so now it's just "alright" instead of 10/10

waterbending is incredibly low benefit versus cost in its color and airbending is only situationally better than just eot blinking, I feel like +type artifact - equipment is not significantly more complex than +type creature with all the caveats they gave the ability, and earthbending should not be making lands into golems that persist not only beyond any removal but also when the thing that earthbent them dies.

Obviously the mechanic is not going to be 100% conveying what earthbending is like. Keying the lands to the creature that animated them would be a chore. Ultimately, "disposable land animation" is a very good way to convey the core of the concept (making earth constructs and throwing them at the enemy) through the mechanics of the game.
And i have to disagree with you on waterbending. While the mechanic itself is kind of a big nothing, the various cards they've printed with extremely high waterbending costs for a huge splashy wacky effect turned me around on it.

It is. It's +type artifact, +the equip ability/free equip, +abilities to make them worth equipping, even if it's just a flat +1/+1, and considerably more complex balancing, because equipments do nothing if there are no creatures to equip them to; how do you make a set where 1/4 of the main mechanics literally do nothing?

Hasbro is doing a lot worse than Konami while also being worth about half as much. Konami has other profitable areas like videogames while Hasbro's mostly a legacy toy manufacturer who's been struggling to turn an actual profit in anything besides D&D or Magic for years while losing tons of money with 95% of their franchises. It's why Magic is getting milked so fucking hard the last couple years, there's even investors who wanted WOTC spun off as an independent entity from Hasbro but that hasn't happened and probably won't

Hell, the first time the word "indestructible" was used was on a white card in Alpha. It's been Gideon's main deal since he was introduced too.

white's had instant speed indestructible combat tricks since Dark Ascension, before that it had instant speed Protection From X (like Emerge Unscathed which was 2010)

Hexproof existed since 1995 and it was GREEN.
And wow look at you posting shit examples that aren't to do with what we are talking about. Yes, white gets Flagbearer effects. These are not the same thing.

WRONG, RETARD. White conditionally had access to flagbearer-like effects. Guess what, moron? There is exactly ONE white creature with Shroud, and it is Calcider, a planeshifted Blastoderm in the set intentionally designed to show things THAT ARE NOT WITHIN A COLOR'S REAL SLICE OF THE PIE.

okay, well I do. We're arguing about "HEXPROOF" and "INDESTRUCTIBLE" as specific keywords, and those keywords have always existed in White since first being printed. Even similar mechanical effects that were not keywords, and had their effects written out differently for each card featuring them, have always existed in white.
But it's categorically false to say that Hexproof and Indestructible aren't white. "Hexproof" as an evergreen keyword did not exist until 2011. Starting in 2011 White got Hexproof and Indestructible cards. Hexproof and Indestructible are White and always have been.

All this talk about color pie, but to me the biggest color pie break is that colorless gets to do everything, even stuff that certain colors aren't supposed to do.
For example, if I made a 4UU 6/6 creature with Deathtouch and Lifelink, it would be a color pie break, because Blue isn't supposed to have those. And an even bigger break if when it died it created a 3/3 with Deathtouch and a 3/3 with Lifelink. But if I make it a colorless Artifact card suddenly it's OK.
Colorless should either only do stuff every color can do, or have their cards cost a lot more.

The difference is that it's an artifact, which are regarded as a vulnerability that makes the creature a risk. If it was a blue artifact creature.. it would be less of a problem, the main reason now being it has no reason to actually BE blue.
That or it's an eldrazi, in which case it's supposed to be doing stuff that no color is allowed to do at the cost of being deliriously expensive.

yeah, "artifacts/colorless can do anything if you pay enough" has been responsible for some of the most broken metas in the game's history, especially since artifacts are ALSO often associated with cost reduction mechanics like Affinity, Phyrexian Mana, Improvise, or even the new Waterbending.
