/awg/ ⟅Alternative Wargames General⟆
>Previous thread:
>>96837162

>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, Judge Dredd,
HeroClix, Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void,
Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenos Rampant, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.
Archon Studio, Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Mantic, North Star Military Figures,
OnePageRules, Osprey, Para Bellum, Seb Games, Spellcrow, TTCombat, Victrix, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

At the very least the StarCraft game should have a rule to start with a choice of buildings and said units will respawn as long as their building isn't destroyed. After Halo Flashpoint release it's not even such an alien or risky thing anymore.

What is this GW quality meme? I built a MESBG Troll Cave few months ago and the gaps around his neck and shoulders plus left side were massive. About a month ago I built a free Space Marine sprue and it was finnicky as fuck with lots of fiddly parts for what ended up being a monopose figurine anyway.

GW quality myth is spread by 40kuck who worship GW and try to justify the outrageous price to themselves. Their plastic quality is pretty good and has very minimal mold lines, but they are all absolutely dogshit to assemble and the sculpting of the models themselves are really bad. It's really obvious a lot of their newer models were made by interns working for peanuts. They routinely fuck up basic anatomical proportions. Pic related example, how long would someone neck have to be to fit in this costume?
Anonymous No.96878232 [Report] >>96881040
>>96878200
Sculpting and the actual design of the miniature has nothing to do with production quality. GW plastics have zero flash (very common with some Warlord kits for example) and almost no mold lines. Archon is very much identical in that regard. They too, have bad sculpts and sometimes mediocre designs, but the production quality is excellent. Since with StarCraft, the design is not their own, the result should be great, if you like the StarCraft design to begin with.

I have the base game and though I haven't played it in oh, about 16 years, I can tell you the minis suck. They're full of random spikey bits and odd angles and tiny so they look like knockoffs of the original designs. It's as if they didn't get the license for the game and had to do not-starcraft minis. Yeah it's basically an exaggerated hounskull bascinet. The bestiarum team have a great eye for aesthetics. However, I wish they made the models a bit sturdier and released more multipart kits.

Also thought of buying the turnip28 lancer kit, as they are modular, have pistols and disgusting hairless mutant horses. Would fit to that army quite well. Just need to buy the 2nd edition of dragon rampant and try make my son play it with me instead of just Xenos rampant.

I don't think so. The only plastic Cave Troll GW released is pic related and the mold is from 2005. It makes it older than most Anons in this thread. There is no other plastic Cave Troll in GW's model range so you either don't even know the name of the kit you bought or don't understand the difference between the kit release date and kit manufacturing date.

Since people our age started to end up with full-time families, 60-hour workweeks and/or cancer. I only see my mates once every 3-4 weeks if stars align and I would play a wargame only once every 2-3 months if it wasn't for my wife that is not so much into wargaming but she enjoys painting miniatures. I have hard time to shit on people for not playing games but the hobby aspect of wargaming is something that is being done in solitary in most cases anyway so there are no excuses.

At least GW used to fill a useful function in the wargaming space by bringing in kids that might eventually move to better games. Now they're focused on squeezing the kids that previous iterations of GW brought in 10-20 years ago, probably leading to a massive collapse in their own playerbase eventually as people get older.

I ignored the question because it's retarded and proves you're a fat ass. Fatties ALWAYS fall back on the bench press because it takes zero athleticism or fitness ability to lay on your back and press for 5 seconds of effort. In fact, if the "sport" of powerlifting is any indication, the bench press even FAVORS being a fatass.
Whereas any young athletic and fit male is able to run a decent 5k, something that is prohibitive to fatties and old broken losers. Meanwhile, I regularly see old 60+ year old boomers who are built like used tires laying on the bench repping out 250, 275, 400+.
Can you run a max effort 5k? Can you rep out 10 clean pullups? If you can't then you're not fit and no one cares about your bench press fatty

Trying out a suggestion from a youtube. Under painted it with two colours, web blending them in the middle. Then painted out some of the highlights with bright paint.

It was then lacking some "pop", mostly due to not having done any shading. Using a sepia wash kinda fixed that, although the colours ended up a bit washed out

Lately I've been trying these AK acrylics and they do me fine, but mostly I keep busy reading books about the Roman Empire, War of the Rose (my favorite), black powder era and Napoleonic. Lately it's been a book a week and I've developed quite the knowledge regarding armor authenticity. In fact I can spot any wrong paldron or breech on any miniature within seconds. It's obviously not the case with any of you here since you refuse to admit being part of the hobby is opening a book at least once in your life and my effort posts always goes to waste.

Your pic related looks nice for some space marines. Alternative Armies didn't have a lot in the 'big armoured pauldron guys' category.
Why don't you think you'll jump into 15mm? I went with it because the value for money is good and I have a thing for poorly painted miniatures. Plus way less resin per thing I want to print.

Nevermind the Billhooks was specifically made for WOTR and has a section covering HYW as well. The rules have a lot of period accurate flavor and do a good job representing combat from that era. Hail Caesar has a dense WOTR supplement as well and some guys enjoy it, but I personally prefer rules specifically tailored for period instead of supplementing very generic rulesets to fit a period.

I haven't played 3 yet either, been too absorbed in Xenonauts 2 (effectively an improved X-Com). I highly recommend the Stracciatella mod for 2. Fixes some critical bugs, doesn't go as overboard on the webbing autism as 3.11 or the other late-stage fan mods, has some fun extra guns. Most of the game is very doable in Asymmetric Warfare if you want to run a tabletop campaign although the Crepitus are gonna take some hacking to put into the game. I've done a couple scenarios loosely based on it and the guys at the LGS haven't caught on yet.

A bit off topic, but i think JA3 is an excellent game, and its finally the worthy successor JA2 deserved, after all those "meh at best" titles like Back in Action and Flashback, or the garbage like Rage.
However, JA3 is not a mil-sim, its a fun squad-based tactics game. So do not expect the whole Ja2 1.13 gun and equipment autism there. (There are mods for more guns, more realistic outfits for the mercs etc of course).

If you enjoy(ed) JA2 when it originally was released, i'm sure you will like it. Buy during a sale if in doubt.

Anyway, i put together some Oathmark Orks, and a couple of FG Cultists and Fireforge guys. Everything matches nicely, and after the first coat of contrast flesh colour, those "new" Frostgrave cultists faces start to look interesting.

Well mate I was really surprised someone gave you this answer because I love Dominions and as a Lion Rampant player I couldn't see how Dragon Rampant would be anything related.

Now that I did read DR until the Optional Rules chapter, it's still not a great Dominion filler but at least it does allow us to represent a Unit with a single miniature so there's that.

Take a greater warbeast, two mages, fill the rest with chaff. From then on it's homebrew and campaign rules. I'll encourage you to look into Of Armies And Hordes though. Might be fuel for your fire there. Oh and keep me posted, will you?

>>96904749
You're welcome but i's not even my copy to begin with. I found it on Telegram. The game looks like a good balance between enough options and not drifting too far apart from the original material. I can see myself switching from Lion to Dragon without scratching my head at all so there's that.

I totaly understand why we're not rolling for our Leader to die accidently during a fight anymore, but removing the Duel rule entirely is a bit more surprising.

No. It was sort of an aesthetic people used for a lot of vaguely weeby SF in the late 1980s so you occasionally see old stuff crop up. It's more of a 1950s trope.
>under $10/model
Well, you've got the old Battletroops models. https://ariesgamesandminis.com/collections/online-exclusive-battletroops
They're beefy 25mm, and one-piece metals, but they do exist and cost around $5-10 a pop. IIRC there's some other applicable models in the 25mm Stargrunt range as well. Ground Zero doesn't believe in putting actual images on their website for everything, however, and their sculpts are very hit-or-miss in addition to being closer to 1/72 than 25mm.

In my experience the older the grog the chiller they are, but the more gating they find the younger autists.

I had a bit of a snap at a younger guy a few weeks ago because he had no ‘inside voice’ and would constantly interrupt others (myself included) and just crank up the volume until nobody else could hear anything. After about the second hour I told him to mind his voice and stop interrupting, my father was a veteran with PTSD and I’ve had enough shouting in my ear for one lifetime. I felt bad that I snapped at him but he did settle down, and no sign of the behaviour returning on a subsequent gaming meet. Beware the rage of the quiet man I suppose.

Maybe add in a bit of leveling, not like 1 to 99 but 1 to 4 so his hume soldier has more hp than that one or something.

They can even mass print blocks so we can build our own battlefields and they can have height play into it.

It would be easy as shit to get into building your clan.

>In my experience the older the grog the chiller they are, but the more gating they find the younger autists.
Fuck, that's me, I might be getting old.

Based on Tactics Advance? Yeah that could work pretty well

I can't help but imagine it'd either be in some fucked proprietary scale or be sold as prepainted gacha packs and half the shit in it is from the FF7 remake, and for some reason Lightning takes up three character slots.

Does anyone have suggestions for werewolf and wolf miniatures?

WGA has a box of werewolves which look okay but a little boring
Infinity has probably the best looking wolves and wolfmen but they're all pretty heavily sci-fi, monopose metal and expensive

Oathsworn has some cool Redwall-esque foxes but you could paint it as a wolf if you want

So do I, like, run out the clock waiting for 3.6 or what? Is it really so bad?

3,5 is getting an emergency fix in the next few months. Personally, it is playable but it feels like the beta rules needed a lot more time to be worked over and straightened out. Far too much weapon rule clutter is my biggest concern and a number of armies in both AoF and GDF are painfully overpowered before you factor in how the new weapon changes and leader ability changes buff them, due to the army-wide unique rules being implemented the way they are.
