Int often seems like the least important mental stat as long as it’s 10 or more. Below that people act like you’re a retard. Charisma helps with talking to people, wisdom helps with the majority of spell saves. How would you make int into the god of mental stats it should be?

Reminder that 10 just means "average, with no real benefit or disadvantage."

If you want an example of a character that's actually dumb, there's Grog Strongjaw, Int 6.

It's because there are *two* classes that use INT, and one of them is artificer. I would make an actual half caster who isn't artificer that uses it.

How are we feeling about 5.5e Heroes of Faerûn's circle magic as a direct, free expansion to spellcaster flexibility and problem-solving, right from level 1?
https://5e.tools/book.html#frhof,5,circle%20magic

Set aside theorycrafting-level options like hours-long Delayed Blast Fireballs for gajillions of damage. Consider some more practical applications.

A level 1 party wants to assassinate some pesky noble from afar. A longbow goes out to only 600 feet, and even that will probably incur disadvantage. No problem: just circle cast Chromatic Orb, Guiding Bolt, Witch Bolt, etc. for +1,000 feet of range per secondary caster. The secondary casters need not expend any spell slots for this.

A level 1 party wants to Sleep the enemy side, but a 5-foot radius is insufficient. A 15-foot radius, though, that might do. A secondary caster tosses in their own action and spell slot, and there we go.

A level 1 party wants to squeeze more out of Divine Favor, Jump, or another brief-duration spell. They get one secondary caster to burn a spell slot for +1 hour of duration, bringing up such a spell from 1 minute to 61 minutes.

These are merely level 1 examples. Who knows what a higher-level party can do?

The most practical application is to have someone take a couple levels in Warlock, since then you have a couple short rest slots that you can use to circle cast ahead of time with lengthy durations, or otherwise just easily get them back.

Martial characters already struggle to be useful, but in a campaign with that rule available it becomes active sabotage to not be playing at least a half-caster. Warlock+Paladin multiclass is probably stronger than ever.

>though recharging those slots still takes a Short Rest.
Except that doesn't really matter if you're using those slots to extend a spell to an 8 hour duration, or if you're using it to during downtime to create free holy water via Ceremony.

It's an extremely minor drawback, especially if you're planning on doing goofy things like augmenting a spell to hit enemies from a half-mile away. It doesn't really matter if you need to take an hour break afterwards if the enemies would need more time than that to track you down.
Especially since in 2024 plenty of full casters have other reasons to take short rests more often.

Int should be tied to perception, or at least give it a slight boost past 10. Intelligence in real life measures pattern recognition and information retention; I feel like that'd include perception in some way.

Hey guys, what do you think about the melee War Cleric? I really like the idea of a full caster with high Strength in 5e 2024, and from what I’ve seen, this subclass seems to be the closest fit.
Divine Order: Protector
Stats: 15 Wis, 14 Str, 14 Con, 10 Dex, 8 Int, 8 Cha
Background: Farmer (I just really like the concept of a humble young human, hardworking and down-to-earth, who eventually becomes a hero).
Race: Human
Origin Feat: Tough (extra HP)
Second Origin Feat: Magic Initiate (Wizard) — Minor Illusion, True Strike, and Shield as the 1st-level spell (though I’m not entirely sure about that choice yet).
That’s as far as I’ve gotten. I haven’t really looked deeply into the Cleric’s spell list or which spells are best for a melee War Cleric.
Any general suggestions?

You don't need to change anything, just actually enforce the skill checks it should govern over. Perception should be sharing the load of observation based checks with investigation and not be the god everyone wants proficiency in. A lot of GMs seem to like to give out lore and information for free rather than asking for an Arcana/Religion/History check.

Remember 3rd edition: free metamagic was unfair, but playable and didn't change the game into something completely different, until you found a way to cheat up Persistent Spells.
Circle Magic is all fun and games, until your players bust out Prolong.
It's not even that bad at level 1, the most abusive thing you can find is all day Divine Favour.
But 2nd level spells, already give you options that you might want to keep up all day. At least with Concentration, you can't stack them, but keeping a Flaming Sphere around for 1h or 8 is doable and a very smart way of solving problems at 3rd level. Or giving your familiar all-day Dragon Breath. Or... you get the idea.
And for 3rd level spells, you get Sprit Guardians.
It makes the game devolve into a Dispel Magic/Counterspell fight.

It annoys me that 2024 let Warlocks add their invocations to other cantrips besides Eldritch Blast, but Warlocks don't get access to Fire bolt, Ray of Frost, or even Shocking Grasp.

!!! Gunslinging or Hand Crossbow Bladesinger is completely possible now! The only thing is you still can't use a ranged weapon as a Spellcasting Focus for your Wizard spells, but you could just sidearm whatever melee weapon you want when you want to cast a Material component spell.

For peak comedy- Gun-using Bladesinger Wizards who got Martial Weapons from a feat or multiclass should sidearm a Greatsword or Pike to hold in their off hand to cast with.

Cept Wizards retconned her into being super evil. She got kicked out of the party when she tried to murder Boo and doubled down on being a Sharite. Between BG2 and BG3, she did a lot of evil for the lulz. Also, she was lying about her origin story, at least according to Wizards. She left the Underdark for political reasons, not out of moral objections, and she killed the farmers because they were weak and she could, not because they tried to rape and bury her alive. Wizards was pretty consistent with Drow = genetically/spiritually evil at birth up until around 4E.

you gotta not assume that the niche romance arch with viccy in bg1/2 is the defacto canon storyline for that character, or any character for that matter.

her neutral ending is pretty close to what happened in bg3 / wotc lore, and that she was written by the OG bald gate writers. The only difference is that she loves shar a lot, but that's pretty reasonable as she had been devoted for a long ass time for that, briefly adventured with Gorians ward, then fucked off and was probably harassed constantly again.

You barely need to or don't at all, depending on the class & subclass.
Champion Fighter got justifiedly improved, while PDK is garbage, so it's not as if you can even expect a uniform level of power and quality from 2024 reprints anyway.

No, canon Abdel was kind of a failure. The canon choices were usually the neutral ones whenever possible (which makes sense, canonically he's an unkitted TN Fighter). Abdel was the type who rushed the main quest and ignored side content (makes sense, as the main quest is pretty important), didn't romance or redeem anyone, and completed BG2/ToB at a relatively low level (he never unlocked HLAs, and Minsc/Jaheira were stronger than he was). He was killed by accident by noobie adventurers decades later.

>CELESTIALS —Rob Heinsoo (4e)
>If you’re a long-time D&D fan, odds are that you’ve already noticed that the tieflings’ promotion to first-rank player character race has left another race behind: the race that was the tieflings’ light-side counterpart, a race of golden humans descended from angels—the aasimar.

>Even now I struggle to type that word without spelling it like buttocks.

>I’m one of the designers who argued that we should stop using the word “aasimar.” In the aasimar’s place, you’ll meet a race of celestials who have plunged through the same transforming fires as the tieflings.

>I won’t lie: making Good-associated creatures as exciting as their Evil-curious counterparts is a challenge. I call the challenge the “Ave Maria” problem, a reference to Walt Disney’s original Fantasia, a wonderful animated film that ended with musical meditations on Evil and Good. Evil got Night on Bald Mountain, accompanied by an evil-storm orchestrated by a whip-wielding demon. Good followed up with barely animated candle-bearing keepers of the faith proceeding across the screen singing Ave Maria. It’s a sweet piece of music, and it certainly speaks to the possibilities of Good, but the animation just didn’t hold a candle to lightning storms on Bald Mountain.

>So now you know our mission: celestials who sizzle bright enough to hold their own against Bald Mountain lightning storms. We’re working on it!
Why is it that their attempts at "more interesting morally-ambiguous replacements" (Deva, Ardlings during 5.5e playtest, etc) continually turn out more boring and lacking in actual identity? Like, not even being disparaging, I'm just baffled that they couldn't see that "playing a crusading angel" is a very self-evident appeal whereas trying to lift Hindu myth (or make "animal people from the heavens") doesn't have as much obvious appeal besides having less alignment-heavy trappings?

There's a sort of myopia effect when you're in a position of creative design authority (in tabletop, vidya, or elsewhere) where you can get so wrapped up in your ideas, you forget what it was like to be the guy opening things up for the first time and thus lose sight of the essential audience perspective - from an operational level (like not thinking about the fact you made a system too rigid because it wasn't hard to work on development-wise) or just blindly rationalizing that players will share your mindset.

It's also a single, one-note character. The explosion of tiefling popularity hinged on the character tension of defining yourself in spite of your heritage...or succumbing to it. But defining yourself "in spite of" being good isn't much of a hook.
Anonymous No.96925706 [Report] >>96925801

consider the flip side. Everyone expects you (the Aasimar) to be successful, great, change the world, etc.
Anonymous No.96925708 [Report]
>>96925668
Yeah
Tieflings surged in popularity for two big reasons, most players prefer to be good characters (or at least, not evil) and the standard "fight against my heritage" character is fun. And demon people are hot (yeah they're devils I know)
Aasimar for the longest time just looked like humans and didn't really have that built in character hook

You can just flavor them however you want. I ran a lich once that was more like a construct because he made himself a cyborg body. It was still the lich stat block but his spell casting was flavored as him cycling magic gems into his palms and firing spells from them. I also made lightning damage heal him so he could heal by lightning bolting himself.

This is MtG speak for “only the numbers matter, fantasy fiction is just a veneer.” It’s what passes for dnd now because, look at that, the creations of MtG bought and redesigned dnd starting with 3rd ed on.
