The problems with Dial Tone is that

1. They gave him a pointless slut choker collar around his neck

2. They let DEI faggots make him dark skinned because apparently Italians all have to be dark skinned.

3. They gave him a pencil mustahce instead of a nice thick 'stache.

And the swarthy dark skin basically made him look fake and plastic looking ala Cover Girl and Falcon, in terms of fails.

The fact that they yanked him out of his wave's cases is pretty clear that Hasbro knows they fucked up ala Cover Girl and Falcon and are damage controlling like crazy to fucking keep the figure from wide release to avoid a huge backlash. Especially since they know Dial Tone's one of the most demanded figures of the entire line given how batshit crazy his fanbase is.

The posters are telling the truth though (and you clearly are butt-hurt you spent around $50+ for the figure to cope). They fucked up Dial Tone just like they did Falcon and Cover Girl and the fact that they pretty much discontinued the figure ASAP and yanked him from the case assortment, is proof of it in terms of Hasbro knowing they fucked up.

You forget the worst part: if we do get a second Dial Tone figure....

Why choose? They all work well enough together to be a big squad. If you already have a bunch of CI Vipers, the Retro one would make a good squad leader. If you only have one CI Viper, get a few Retro ones to be the grunts.

Not including the PP Viper, I'll have a squad of six since I have one CI, the three pack and will be getting two Retro. That makes one squad with two three man fireteams to work with. They're similar enough to all be considered Vipers, but different enough to have different roles in the Viper Infantry.

Kinda did a similar thing with the ME stuff as I built a small squad of the original 25th Vipers, but then got kinda crazy with the PoC updated ones. The older 25th figures got turned into technicians and drivers while the PoC ones did the front line combat. If I could find a troop carrier affordable enough to work with six Classified Vipers, I'd probably do the same with these guys.

There were a LOT of stories about people calling to Hasbro to get replacement sets sent to them (and it being 50/50 if the sets were frankensteined since Hasbro refused to do a recall and reissue the set with new packaging to let people know they got the fixed set), with Hasbro eventually caving and not even requiring people send back the old set to get a replacement set.

I mean, the HISS Tank was one of the most successful Haslabs ever. Sure, I'm sure some people just bought them to resell, but plenty of people bought multiples just to own. And it was 4x the price of the Stinger.

I think the Stinger is pretty nice, but at the same time, it is kind of just a grey brick. Also, if you display it as-is/as it is meant to be displayed, you can't even really see the figures in it unless you start removing all the panels. As someone else mentioned, the Vamp is just a more iconic version, and the Stinger is just kind of a dull grey repaint.

The Stinger used to outsell the Vamp all the time though. It was always hard to get, so seeing it go on clearance prices like that makes me wonder what happened to the fanbase. Whether it's big or small, shouldn't it still have sold well if the fanbase remained the same? I know that Hasbro doesn't expect people to army build their 1:12 stuff like they did with 1:18 and retail has tamped down vehicle orders hardcore.

And i own bigger vehicles than that, doubles of some... in 1:18. I don't buy any vehicles for 1:12, because I don't play with 1:12 like i do with 1:18. I mean, I rarely even buy more than 1 of army buildable figs in 1:12, whereas almost every army buildable Cobra character in 1:18 i've bought at least 3 of (i think i've maxed out at 15).
And quite frankly, I don't actively buy modern GI Joes. I only buy favorites.. unless I think Mezco will make one. So the only favorites i don't own are Major Bludd and Cobra commander, because Mezco still hasn't made them.
Maybe if Mezco makes Cobra army builders, I'd own two Officer/Infantry/Alley/Range/Vipers

Personally, I never liked the Stinger and honestly I barely liked the Vamp. A two seater 4x4 is probably the most boring military vehicle you could make. But even not being a big fan of it, I'd always at least get one Vamp, but I'd always pass on Stingers. But seeing that add on set from Gridiron really makes me want to grab the Stinger, just to turn it into a full on mobile artillery piece. I certainly don't have room for that, but it's so much cooler when it's more then just a missile shooting pick up truck.

The main problem with that is if I had the spare $200+ I'd need to make that suped up Stinger set, I'd much rather spend it on that Warhammer tank that just popped up. That thing is probably bigger then the Stinger, but has way more parts and paints and would go great with Roboskull mkII. It's also just a far more interesting looking and playable vehicle with all it's hatches and transport seats and such.

>>11449319
I mostly agree with you that two seaters are weak shit, hence me never owning a Vamp. A small, two seater car with exposed seating is kinda worthless, because the driver/passsanger is exposed everytime you want to use the machine guns.

Give it an ARMORED cabin AND MISSILES, where you fire at shit from behind cover or over horizon? That actually makes sense, looks cooler, and thusly, makes it more playable. It acts as a diorama piece, a setting that your GI Joes can attack because Cobra is planning on shooting jets down from a foreign military air base. Your Cobra figures also won't immediately die in the assault, because the vehicle actually offers protection.
So there's a lot of play value here.

I never liked the Vamp. It can't carry troops. No armor. Weakly armed. I think the only reason it gets any attention is purely for nostalgia reasons and nostalgia is nothing but poison. I own dozens of other vehicles and even when they have less armor, at least they can carry a bunch of heavily armed individuals to their next battle or carries a bigger weapon.
They should have made the VAMP 2 instead.

The Vamp was always a quick Recon vehicle, never meant for frontline combat, so it having light armor makes plenty of sense to me. But it being a two seater will never not be a disappointment because even a recon vehicle can still double as a small transport, and there's plenty of space for a back seat. It was especially disappointing on the Classified version as they could have easily made the rear vent piece open up into a small storage bed or something so you could squeeze in a third figure or some extra cargo. (I also think the front winch was done in a lazy way as well).

Likewise, the Stinger was never really meant for combat either, with only four rockets it was designed to sneak in, take it's shot then gtfo. The armor panels are probably more to protect from it's own backblasts then enemy engagements. But being essentially just a recolored Vamp with doors and missiles, it was always boring to me so I always avoided it as I'm not really fond of Joe and Cobra using the same basic rides. But with all those Gridiron upgrades, it would become a whole different beast....but I don't really have the spare $300ish it would take kit the whole thing out right now, so I'll just pass on it entirely.

>>11450023
I actually got three versions of the Vamp 2, the original tan, the rerelease green and the blue "Ninja" version from Retaliation. Easily one of the best Joe 4x4s ever released with the Ninja one feeling like a whole different vehicle with it's add ons. I never thought they were that hard to find back in the day, I even remember seeing em on clearance in places but never bothered getting more since they took up so much space.

>Likewise, the Stinger was never really meant for combat either, with only four rockets it was designed to sneak in, take it's shot then gtfo.
The full name is "Night Attack Stinger", so yeah, it would have to fire all four rockets in a single salvo then retreat, as it'd give it's position away as soon as it fires. Adding a gun of some kind so it's not completely useless once it's fired all it's rockets might have been a good idea though.

But a Stinger doesn't have to be on the frontlines, it can coordinate with Televipers elsewhere, possibly one in a Flightpod, to strike at targets it doesn't have a direct line of sight to.

>The armor panels are probably more to protect from it's own backblasts then enemy engagements.

So speaking as a non-nostalgiafag (I got into GI Joe in 1985), i never saw the point of the Vamp when there's many more vehicles that GI Joe has to offer that are better looking, faster, better armored, and have bigger/more weapons. As a kid, I saw the recon sled as the speedier, cooler alternative. As an adult? Well, there's the AWE Striker, LAV, hummers, Bradleys...

The Stinger, to me, it's an ambush vehicle. It drives into a picnic area, parking lot, or clear spot in a forest and waits for its target to pass by. Airliner, jet, general in a motorcade, etc. It just needs someonehidden at the top of a hill, pointing their laser at the target and the Stinger fires from where no one can see it. Or just portable radar. It can also be used as an opening attack vehicle, miles away, aimnig at bunker doors and/or gun emplacements.
It's not attempting to get into any direct fights, like a recon vehicle should.

And there's the play value with the Stinger, because GI Joe might get wind of this ambush or sneak attack, and try and prevent it from happening. The Stinger being target/play focus. This type reconning can't really be done with the VAMP and there are better alternatives for the VAMP if you just want something to push around in a car chase.

Those Mattel scout vehicles might look more boring than the Vamp, because there's no guns, but at least it has space to carry figures in the back. And i bought mine specifically just to customize. $15 each, so i can add a remote gun turret to it and paint it up. Maybe I'll just paint one up and just leave the hatch as is, because it's cool to have a guy aiming his gun at attackers behind him vs just turning a turret backwards in a chase.

>there's also standing room for two men right behind the rockets, with no protection from the backblast
>Nice work, Destro.
That's always been one of my biggest gripes about the Stinger, is that it gets the back step while the Vamp doesn't.

>>11451314
Yea, not defending the Vamp too much. I've *always* felt it would've been a cooler vehicle if it just had a storage bed in the back instead of those vents. Hell, if that spot just flipped open it would've been fine because it would've been great play value. But as a toy, as a two seater, generic looking 4x4, it was always the most boring of Joe vehicles. Honestly, I never even had one as a kid, my main Joe "jeeps" were the Desert Fox 6WD (and it's Dino-Hunter repaint) and the Mud Buster, two far less traditional but far more interesting looking LAVs.

Sadly I doubt Classified would ever come out with versions of any of those.

the footpegs on the bumbers are basically there for people catching a ride, not for use in combat. Missiles in general are meant to be fired from immobile positions. So vehicles like the Bradley can't fire its TOW missile on the go.

Even direct fire artillery like these recoilless rifles can't be used on the move. So people aren't standing behind any of these vehicles when in use, unless they want to be blown the fuck away (literally).

I was pretty cautious as a kid. Despite not really knowing much about real military shit, i was aware that rockets and cannons shot hot flames out the back and always had my figures avoid these area. It was great to see a movie finally recognize that shit, with True Lies and firing the RPG inside the truck.
Even tank exhausts should be avoided, because the air stream gets hot enough to boil water when just idling. When it's moving? You can't stand anywhere close to the back of one.

>>11451434
Yeah, the vamp is just boring. I'd argue its fun for kids, but man, i was one and even Hot Wheels-quallity wheel axels killed it. Stuff like the AWE striker had working wheel suspension.
Does the 1:12 VAMP have working suspension? For its price, it better.

>Does the 1:12 VAMP have working suspension? For its price, it better.

It does actually, and some very nice suspension at that. The Classified Vamp is actually very nice overall, my main two gripes with it are the winch is super lazy (no ratchet and no official place to rest the hook) and the problem I have with all retro styled Vamps in that it's trunk is useless. There's no reason the Classified one couldn't fit a hinge with some molded seats or something in the back of it as there's plenty of room. Would've made it a way more fun toy.

To be fair, the Cobra soldier is standing like 2-3 feet to the side of the missile that's firing. So the artist is at least aware that missiles are dangerous to stand behind of.
How safe is it standing next to one? I guess it depends on the launch stages. Maybe Destro thought about making missiles safer, since the vehicles are so small.

Pic of a guy kneeling behind but next to a rocket launcher, so he's almost completely hidden by the exhaust plume.

I have two nephews from two different brothers who are too young for action figures right now, and I kind of want to introduce them to GI Joe when they're old enough but I don't know what staple characters will be available in a few years or if Hasbro will even still be making GI Joe by the time they're old enough. One of them will be turning 4 sooner than the other but they're close to the same age. I am thinking about stocking up on some classic Joe characters and putting them away as birthday and Christmas gifts for them for a couple years, but I'm not sure if that's something thoughtful to do or if I'm just being a cringe millennial pushing my childhood stuff on kids who should be figuring out what they like for themselves.

I guess the flipside is that if they end up having no interest in them I could just flip the remainder of whatever stockpile I have on eBay and likely recoup most of the cost a few years from now, but I want to hear some other opinions before I start stocking up. Especially since the Awe Striker might be going on preorder tomorrow, and if I'm getting Joe stuff for the nephews I'd probably end up buying three instead of one. It'll never be like when I was a kid with the 3/4 line and there were vehicles and playsets in every store, but I'd still like to pass on GI Joe to them when they're the right age to appreciate it.

I'm planning on getting the Snake Eyes and white Timber two pack for them.

I guess the other question is how old is the right age for these things. The package says 4 and up but is 5 or 6 more appropriate? Particularly since watching the cartoon was a big part of my love for the show when I was a kid, and I don't rememeber how old I when I first saw it. I guess I can always ask the parents if they think they're ready for action figures, but I should still try to figure how long I'm gonna have to store these things.

And hey, Christmas will be here before you know it. You've got some time to start picking up some Joe stuff for your newphew.

That's true, but as I was saying earlier, a Stinger is going to want to fire all four missiles pretty quickly, as it gives it's position away as soon as it fires.

>How safe is it standing next to one? I guess it depends on the launch stages. Maybe Destro thought about making missiles safer, since the vehicles are so small.
Destro doesn't usually seem to have much protection from the blast from his own wrist rockets, so maybe he's an absolute genius at making this stuff safer.

This conversation has put the visual in my head of Battle Armor Cobra Commander standing on the back of a Stinger and just tanking the blast from all four rockets as an intimidation tactic before leaping into battle.

My Wal-Mart dropped GI Joe completely after they had about 20 Retro Lady Jayes and Baronesses that wouldn't sell. They sat there for months as everything else eventually sold out, and then they moved the action figure aisle to a smaller one and GI Joe didn't go with it.

Target held out longer, but then they got like 10 Tiger Force Roadblock and Tripwire twopacks that wouldn't sell out, and then it was over for the line, at least for a few months. I could check again and see if they have anything new, I guess. The one place I know that had a good selection of GI Joe consistently was the bigger Wal-mart a few towns over, but I haven't been there in at least a year. For all I know they've dropped GI Joe too but the only way to know is to check.
