Do they have a hard articulated body under the fur, some kinda wire or are they a plush? I’m kinda interested because I like obitsu dolls and mini bjd but I’m willing to wait until they fall out of favour for the next trend to buy one.

They were around before that and really easy to buy. I got a macaron before they popped off. Then one chick from blackpink was photographed wearing one on her designer purse and people flipped shit. Trinket culture in general was already having an insanity moment on top of that so it just multiplied.

PopMart making literally zero effort to mitigate the resellers is also the extra icing on top.

Teacher here. These were popular with broke-ass ghetto Latino kids before the current blowup. They had these as their cheapass little backpack charms, for those who couldn't afford Sanrio stuff. The fact that it's become some kind of wealth/status symbol now is hilarious to me.

Also, do different sizes have different features and articulation? Like there's the standard 5 inch or so but there's also giant versions and non-plush vinyl toy type versions?

with pic rel here. There is always something "off" about a Lafufu when you get it. It will be really obvious once you are seeing it. For example, the fur pulling back like a hood to reveal a bald head, or they are skinny and less "plush" or the face looks fucked up.

I think I might have gotten a fake one. I cut off the long tag, but otherwise this is just how I got it out of the box. I'm concerned with the fact that the tag doesn't have any QR code (I think they're used to verify them) and the fact that the keychain wasn't attached when I opened it. It did come in what appears to be a real bag once I opened the box though. Since I got it from a corner store, I'm trying to decide if it was opened to check if it was rare and then re-sealed, or if it's fake altogether. Anyone able to help?

Yeah, you got lafufu'd. The purple coloring on the tooth shouldn't be there. The whole mouth looks like it was misaligned when printed on actually, and the foot shouldn't be able to twist like that. It's still very cute, though!

I think you're right, I had the same concern about the feet. The head also doesn't feel as sturdy as my other one. I didn't even notice the mouth misalignment, good catch. The tooth, though, should be purple as far as I can tell, since this is the "Big into Energy" series. They're supposed to have that (picrel).
Since this was the first time opening one from that series, I wasn't sure if they were just lower quality than the others.
So in general, though, no QR on the tag means it's fake? Thanks for the help!

The only investment being made is by the license holders and manufacturers, putting their assets into tooling, wages, production, and distribution to ride out the fad.
20 years from now, especially with the massive amount of junk on the market and the repeated short-lived viral-sensation toys, labubu is just going to be another aged toy being sold in bins at flea markets except for the few crazed people who think they have value who are either trying to sell them at high markup or buying up these cheap things thinking they can flip them.
Tickle-me-elmo, hatchimals, cabbage patch, baby shark, monchhichi, whatever caused the excited masses to seek desperately to own back in their time are all devalued except for a few actually rare situations like being a factory error still mint-in-box.
Just some reality here.

Good luck getting away from them. Hyperbolic tabloid styled thumbnails have become the standard for plenty of these types of channels, doubly so for news and politics ones. Far as I know only mainland Chinese popmarts have implemented purchase restrictions. It's still very much the wild west elsewhere.

If I had to guess the popmart suits have massive hard ons as a result of the mania. The property was enough to save their asses from bankruptcy. At this rate the artificial scarcity just makes Labubu seem all the more desirable, and by extension, sees the demand go up even higher.

That's my feelings too. What's funny is I was actually a big fan of pop mart before this; their figures were high quality and I was pretty interested that they centered the artist behind the design of each character line. I would go to the store near me a couple times a month and I would always pick up something. After this labubu shit started I stopped by again, and there was a line 100 people long just to go in. I actually didn't even realize it and went to step in and a guy almost bodied me blocking my way. I haven't been back or bought a single pop mart thing since, and I have such a yucky feeling about it that I don't know that I will ever go back. I know I'm just one customer who didn't spend a LOT so my value is low to them, but still. I would've kept going back for years and years.

Prior to the Labubu frenzy, Popmart did seem sort of charming from afar. A comparitively small company, focused entirely on blindbag figurines, with fingers in every pie as far as brands go. Peanuts, Garfield, Hello Kitty, Doraemon. Your typical run of the mill cutesy collector fodder. They felt like a company out of time. A product of the early 2000's when we still had Hello Kitty stores in the states. But with Labubu being what it is now there's much more of an obvious greed to it all. The Labubu themselves are effectively E-girl NFT monkeys. All the care and effort that was once present has dissipated in exchange for a Funko tier business model. Sad.

I just don't get why out of all the corporate as fuck toys, literally sanrio's existence and the thousands of gacha and blind box shit, it had to be very specifically the labubus. It would make more sense if the criticism was regarding the industry and some people too. It's not even the ugliest toy out there to justify it, far from that.

A lot of toys or hobbies get fucked when they turn very popular and attract tourists that don't even like them genuinely. I only feel bad for the people that genuinely enjoy the labubus. Personally, I like how unconventionally cute they are, I find sanrio too sanitized sometimes for my taste.

If you like them but also don't care about having an official product or just want to have one with an acceptable quality for a cheaper price, you can find them on aliexpress by searching for vague tags such as "17cm v1 replica" and the image is just a silhouette with a question mark (sometimes just a box, etc.). Sellers are doing that because they are taking down high quality replicas. You will need to contact the shop before buying, tho.

As a long long long toy collector, there are some things they did with figures that don't show up in the photos that make them especially appealing as small art pieces. They use a lot of different materials, techniques and finishes to maximize the aesthetic and emotion of the figures. It's part of how you can tell pretty instantly when a Labubu is fake, because they use a cheap glossy plastic with painted features; the original Labubu macarons use a pretty high quality fur, matte plastic face and inset eyes. Some of my favorite series use translucent, pearlescent, matte and glossy, and flocked plastics. I know it's dweeby but I find the whole process of designing and manufacturing products very interesting and they obviously spend extra money trying to meet the artists' visions for each series and make them look premium. I really respected that originally. I'm sure it was all to boost their brand and make more $$$ but they did it by boosting quality and vision and I don't hate that.

Now, they let the resellers flood their stores and don't seem to give a single shit, but rather seem to enjoy the mania. I get being excited that there is such a demand for your products and seizing the opportunity to make money on it. But they are sacrificing the things that made their brand interesting and premium, cheapening it with these swarming flies of resellers hovering around every vending machine and the doors of the store trying to buy all the stock to resell in the parking lot. Fucking rancid vibes. I just wanna buy pop beans, Pop Mart man, let me in, and restock your fucking bean containers.

Relax, people are boosting your thread by having discussions in it. Most people are even saying they like it, just not the weird negative vibes around it. Please keep posting them, they're great.

I'm relaxed as can be, sister. The thread is to post Labubu and Lafufus, though. The amount of dorks writing about how everything is going to end and die and parroting what they heard from their latest video essay... Gee, you mean things are momentary and fleeting? Who'da thunk it. Like we don't already all fucking know. Anyway, just wanted to see people's Labozo Hauls

I got a cool fake little guy for nefarious customising purposes, I really like him. I’m gonna change the eyes cause they’re just stickers under the plastic lenses and install a little wire frame for his body.

These things are way too big to be hanging off people's bags and keychains, looks ridiculous. Do they not do miniature versions?
