Socket pieces can at least still be useful in a decorative fashion (or that always questionably legal way where you put an axle through the sides of the socket). Maybe not the plain black ones, but if you have purple/teal/tan/yellow ones I would definitely hold on to those.
Unless they're 2008 angleshit, of course, in which case they belong in the faggot quarantine bin regardless of whether they've cracked (YET).

It's really a shame that there was never either an earlier classic Slizer or later CCBS/ribbed version of that one 7L double socket with the three perpendicular holes on the side. With 2008 sets you can mostly replace the shit regular and double sockets with classic ones of the same or an acceptable alternate colour, but the 2009 Glatorian sets use that piece breddy heavily so no joy.
Then again, they never made any non-angled av-matoran limb pieces or av-matoran/glatorian heads with a decent joint either, so I guess any small set from 2008-2010 is a complete write-off.

Oh wow, I was checking my messages on Roblox (Yes, that game) and found out that they deleted a Bionicle hat that I made and uploaded in the game more than a decade ago, in like 2012, due to copyright infringement, in fact I just found out that they deleted everything Bionicle related off the entire site, and this happened around May of this year, when Masks of Power was cancelled.

Obviously I didn't give a shit about the hat, but it's such an oddly specific thing for Lego to do, I wonder what's gotten into them lmao.

the rumor is that lego's hired a legal team in the jewnited burgerland states to do work for them. It stands to reason that these burgers want to make a good impression by DMCAing as much random shit as they can. Note that the 1080p movie uploads are gone off of youtube too.
>Look! Here's 1000 instances where we protected your beloved IP! Now no one is happy!
Unironically I think the only reason ((certain)) online resources haven't been taken down is because the boomer retards lego hired are probably as tech savvy as your grandma. They're just removing as much shit as they can because it's now their job.

Also, I was gonna make a remark about Matoro's non-Tohunga head, but they actually depicted them all with Toa/Turaga-style heads in MNOG anyway, so no biggie.

Not really, probably because I am used to mine having cracks like that. A few of my turaga have cracks on the technic connector they use for necks, a bunch of the bushings on my mata/nuva are cracked too.
I'll probably replace them when I have a bigger reason to make a bricklink order since I don't have any spare orange or lime connectors.

Unfortunately not present in the store I found these at, but I at least own her elsewhere. I've got a Gali Nuva canister here, too, though she's packed away at the moment.
I was only able to look at Lewa in the store, but I'm happy to report they're all complete barring a couple small parts. There were some extras thrown in as well, though unfortunately not quite enough to scrounge together a full Turaga to my eye. They even all still have the instructions and mini posters, albeit a little beat-up. Very cool to find, especially for what I paid.

Not that. Look at the fucking elbows and shins and think about how little friction is holding that abortion together (I can't make out the exact body structure at that level of image detail, but I'd rather not even think about if). Shit like this is why people have such a knee-jerk reaction when they see small system elements in a moc.
My rule of thumb is, if it couldn't stand up to a ten-year-old playing with it for 5 minutes without falling apart, it's fucking shit. And I don't think that's an unreasonable bar to set.

100% agree 150$ is way too much for a full set of Toa Mata. Even if you bought each one individually from a separate Bricklink store, including the shipping, it shouldn't come to nearly that much. Unless you want all the canisters and instructions anyway. You could probably find two, three at most, stores and get get all six for half that.

Thanks, I was think they would average $15 or so. A lot of ebay auctions have them in the $20 range or complete sets for about $140-150. I know covid really made prices on collectables shoot up but $20 for a standard set sold everywhere seemed much.

This, it's not a Bionicle MOC, it's a sculpture with modular elements using some Bionicle parts. It looks like things would start dropping off if you just picked it up the way you normally would a Bionicle figure.

It bothers me that there are Earth and Stone seperately in the Bionicle universe. I understand the need for 6 differently coloured ones, but why couldn't the black sets be Shadow element? Stone can remain or be renamed to Earth. You can make an argument for Water and Ice being unnecessarily distinct but that bothers me less for some reason.

Yeah bro, we should only have 5 elements.
Wait, Ice is just less heat, so we only need Fire, Air, Water, and Stone.
No, wait, that's too specific, we should just have Plasma, Gas, Liquid, and Solid.
No, that's not heckin' scientific enough, what we really need is just a Toa of Electromagnetism, Toa of Gravity, Toa of Weak Nuclear Force, and Toa of Strong Nuclear Force.
...
Believe me, you're far from the first person to make this particularly reddit observation, and it only gets more banal every time. But since I'm such a swell fella, I'll explain it once more: there are massive thematic and flavour differences between Earth (underground mole people miners) and Stone (desert-dwelling athletic brazilians) characters. And there is no way in hell Shadow would ever be a non-evil element, and other snowflake elements are cringe and gay.

As it's own unique mask certainly. It is a good design, but I wouldn't want to loose the kaukau nuva we have, I'm just too used to it.

I feel like the kakama should have the blades more swept upwards like the original, and maybe something to make the "facial hair" more angular. It just seems too smooth, and not in a sleek speedy way. I completely agree with you about the top of the pakari looking better, but the shape of the lower part makes it look like the voice of Carl Weezer is going to start talking about lamas from it.

my headcanon was always that materials in the bionicle setting were made up of certain proportions of elemental elemental particles instead of atoms and such. Call em elementons or something. So fire would be nearly 100% fire elementons, stones would be mostly stone elementons, something like glass would be mostly sand elementons mixed with fire elementons, plants would have different elementons than animals hence them being susceptible to different abilities, different types of materials (like copper vs iron or slate vs shale or pack ice vs icicles) having different admixtures of various other elementons. It kinda makes sense in a way.

The theory isn't entirely incompatible with what's "canon", given that Mata Nui and everything inside him is made of 100% protodermis in various forms. And that energized protodermis (which I assume the inert form was derived from to build the whole thing in the first place) is basically a god liquid. And that the combination of any 6 elemental powers creates semi-impenetrable crystalline protodermis.

Yeah, protodermis instead of matter. Protodermis being what toa can manipulate.
Well, it does break down when you get to bara magna/spherus magna, unless that well of protodermis was inside of everything on the planet too to the degree that it could also be manipulated... but obviously I'm takibg liberties

So since I brought up Roboriders anyway, I'd like to do some brainstorming on the topic. The first hurdle I'm undecided on is exactly what sort of form it would take. I basically have three ideas on that:
>more or less just a motorcycle with only the more basic anthropomorphic elements that the original sets have
This would be the least Bioniclesque option, basically, which would either use masks for the faces or their original heads (or more greebly part-built approximations).
>motorcycletaurs, motorcycles with partial torso and arms
This I feel is probably more in the spirit of the originals, since while they're obviously motorcycle-shaped they have clear heads, arms to varying degrees, and in some cases like Lava or Swamp something approximating a torso rather than just a chassis.
>straight-up Toa adaptations
Boring, but more straightforward. I would probably make them the rest of the Chronicler's Company since the colour schemes actually line up pretty well. Obviously using those colour schemes preferentially where they conflict with the CC and with weapons based on the Roboriders'. Macku would be replaced with a new member of the team since she's off in space being a Slizer.
The second and arguably bigger hurdle is how to integrate the wheel-launching function, since like with the Slizers I think it's an important part of the whole concept. With either the motorcycle or 'taur options I can't use them as wheels the same way, since scaling it up means the actual wheels have to be larger more conventional Technic wheels. The launchers would have to probably mounted next to the front wheel without ruining the profile of it all (maybe folding out?) or possibly over it. If I go straight Toa, it's even harder, since while the launcher assemblage can be mounted easily to a socket piece it looks a bit shit (see the Power/Onyx humanoid combiner). I'm thinking in that case probably over the shoulder as with a few of my Slizer mocs.
So, thoughts? There are no dumb ideas.

I'd go with the first option. You want someone to be able to look at them and be able to tell these are the roboriders like with your throwbots. Someone can see Ski and know what it is. The more you deviate from the bike with head the more it'll look like something else.

Reidak. Literally the sole reason why the Toa Nuva got defeated by the Piraka the first time was because they kept trying to smack him down the conventional way (in a fit of plot-induced stupidity, instead of just tossing him in the ocean or something) while the rest picked them off one by one. Thus dooming us to an eternity of "durr the Inika are stronger than the Nuva" retard powerlevel posting.

This doesn't really apply to other Lego overall or even other Technic connectors, but whenever I'm shopping on Bricklink I check to see if the seller has any classic socket pieces and if so buy his whole stock (excluding super-common ones like black singles and blay singles/short doubles) so I have a reasonable amount of spares. Long double sockets especially I find are much more fragile, lime notwithstanding, so I guess the structural quality was going down even before the 2008 Angleshit Apocalypse.

Also the shadow matoran are wearing noble versions of the mask of vampirism, shattering, and silence lol

I think if they had just had the forethought to make the giant monolithic pieces they were using for the bodies, limbs, and head pieces more useful for any other given application (and hadn't cheaped out on awful plastic and used those dumb square connectors) then they would have been better received. Maybe make the arms have some connection points where a socket or ball joint could be added at a different angle to allow it to perform multiple roles, or had the body pieces more easily mesh in with existing hips or torsos or something, like if photok's body design could be attached to some metru hips without looking dumb or something. Idk of they just doubled the parts counts for them it would have fixes everything and still have been fine for little kids imo...

I think it really comes down to the torso being one stupid piece. The Voya Nui Matoran were all unique and had different proportions because the torsos were constructed of simple parts. Having the big dumb torso piece forces them to all look the same. And the Av arm piece is just bad.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but "Great and Noble versions of the same mask have specific defined and different appearances" was the shittiest retcon to come out of Metru Nui. Just raises more questions than it answers, like why every single matoran from Metru Nui/Mata Nui wore either only Noble-"shaped" versions of the six specific masks that the Toa Metru wore or only the Great version of the six masks worn by the six Toa (still not comfortable with "Toa Mata") of legend. Although I guess in the latter case maybe they were just popular that way. Don't see what's wrong with just saying "this is a Huna, this is also a Huna". Especially since Mr Big Dick Mask Maker Vakama didn't instantly know what his entire team's mask powers were just from the shape. Just one big headache the more you think about it.

I agreed with you at first but personally I always felt that masks should have been a single dedicated shape no matter what and any changes to its design would either make its abilities weaker, make it sometimes fail, or completely destroy its abilities. Would make it much more compelling and allow for more reasonable conflict, and weakness.

Well, yes, I agree, but then Norik came along with his "mask shaped exactly like a completely different mask" bullshit and here we are.
Ideally, every type of mask would have a defined range of appearances and attributes that still made it function as that mask without having to classify as whatever variant.
Anyway, to the original point, in 2001 I always understood "Noble" and "Great" to be specific groupings of those six masks respectively rather than powerlevel rankings. The Noble masks just happened to not be as strong as the Great. Like nobody would say that the powerless masks that Tamaru or Ahkmou wore were shaped like Noble Rau, just Rau.

Speaking of autism, I've recently been rebuilding some childhood sets and of the 3 original Toa I had I have made some minor adjustments. I replaced all the light gray technic with black, swapped Tahu's sword for the dual-molded one, and I somehow lost Kopaka's kino radar dish so I used brasso to scrub the print off a Captain america Hero Factory shield. Oh and I gave them technic connector hands, I much prefer those to the blocky ones personally.

There's a lot of guides online but I had to do this recently because I bought a bulk on marketplace and had to clean all the pieces.

I don't remember what order I did it in, but I followed a guide where you put an axle in the brain stem and another axle in his mouth. You put pressure on the mouth axle, and it pushes on the brainstem axle. It should create some space. But I think I was scared I was going to bend the axle and damage the eyes.

Something like this, but it did not come out easy for me the way it did for this guy:
https://youtu.be/fAGJJX0uJn8?t=36

I also carefully used a flathead screwdriver to wiggle some space between the head and the eyes. I was just extremely careful not to scratch or damage anything. I don't remember if I did the flat head or a little bit of the other method first.

I honestly believe that TLG killed Bionicle with the cancellation of G1. In my experience, a few years into the 2010s kids had no idea what Bionicle was, and seeing Bionicle sets they thought they were Hero Factory. Then by the time G2 came around the world and trends have changed a lot. Having lost the aspect of being an established IP Bionicle had no chance to survive anymore (but yeah, it had a lot of other problems too).
And later by killing Hero Factory they killed constraction altogether. Hero Factory was still popular enough, and fans of Hero Factory weren't interested in Bionicle G2. I have memories of both kids and their parents asking/looking for Hero Factory back in 2015-2016. I guess the higher price points didn't help either, G2 sets also looked plainer and smoother (often with awkward proportions and ugly color schemes) than most Hero Factory sets. HF still had this robot-like look with mechanical detailing and this in-your-face cool factor to it. I don't really get why they didn't use the more detailed shells and addons that were available at the time in G2.

if you had to change EVERY Mata mask power, what would you change them to? Bonus if they're all-new abilities not in any other mask.
For me, at least off the top of my head, it's
>Hau -> Healing (symbol of mata nui, contrasts Tahu's brash personality, as he grows and heals as a person he uses it more, etc)
>Kaukau -> Vulnerability detection (makes sense with her fighting style, gels well with her rare violent outbursts making those more effective, can be used to benefit attacking or help cover teammate's weaknesses, makes sense with the visor aesthetic, no longer effectively useless for non-Ga-Toa)
>Miru -> Enhanced hearing/senses (no longer a retroactive downgrade to the Kadin, balances Lewa's ADHD antics, thematically ties in with the music of Le-Koro, can be stretched to give Lewa a pseudo-spidey-sense which fits his character)
>Akaku -> Prediction (allows the user to see the true path of object or objects based on concentrating on one or more, combines with the telescope lens well just like the original, vibes with Kopaka's relaxed, cold, and methodical fighting style, and his overreliance on it meshes with his later-insistence on him being clumsy, which I find funny) (honestly this one was hardest because the akaku's x-ray vision is already peak, especially with the telescopic lens attachment)
>Kakama -> Friction control (allows him to glance and slide on any surface or increase the grip instead; helps compensate for his speed as normal, but now plays into his individual strength, and lets him climb easier, while allowing him to use his projectiles EVEN easier for grabbing and slinging.)
>Pakari -> Redirection (allows him to redirect movement and momentum very easily, which would allow him to gain similar strength to the pakari but requires his notorious wisdom to use effectively, and makes him out to be a bit more of a martial artist; when digging, it could allow hin to slough dirt and rubble to the side as he proceeds.)
Thoughts?

Mask of Adaptation. Allows the wearer to adapt to survive any environment, including underwater. Apparently there's already a "canon" one that physically transforms the wearer's body, but I'm thinking more along the lines of just passively protecting you from any environmental hazards like extreme temperatures or bad air. Effectively this would allow the Toa to survive in each other's "home" environments, such as being underwater or in a volcano.

screw the powersets tell me which versions of the mata masks you like best and worst (including master/uniter, the 3 nobles, lhiikan variant hau, and any other versions I'm forgetting)
For me I've always hated the nuva masks generally, though I don't mind the Kakama Nuva or the Miru Nuva. I just think the Hau Nuva, Kaukau Nuva, Akaku Nuva, and ESPECIALLY the Pakari Nuva look awful.
I also prefer Master Pohatu's "kakama" over all other versions, genuinely. I think it's the best version of the kakama. And controversial as it might be I like the master "kaukau", master "akaku" and the master "pakari" better than the OG. Just wish the master "kaukau" had the visor. Didn't really like any of the Uniter masks for similar reason to the Nuva masks, though.
I think if you just barely touched up the Miru and Hau, just a tiny tiny bit to add a little extra detail/depth and adjust the 4 master versions of the masks to be slightly less complex (and add the visor to the kaukau) then it'd be the best versions. Until I said that right at the end I didn't realize how much I liked the reboot's versions of the masks, writing it out like that.

And while I won't bitch at you too much about liking the Master Kakama, I will say that I prefer the original. I find the G2 version too thick and chunky.

kakam nuva has some cool curves, it reminds me of those old cars with fins on their back. It's also got a very coherent design with those wings that start under the eye and the simple (for a nuva mask) details around the mouth area. If it had been introduced in any other year it would have been a hit, imo.

Also, just for the record, Tahu made the Vahi work the first time he used it and it did exactly what he wanted it to, the Bohrok-Kal just had a bullshit plot armour failsafe out of nowhere.
In fact all that "dood le Vahi is so hecking hard to use" shit just seems like Gregcope because he forgot that the only other person to try using it was a fuckup who'd never actually used *any* mask power before.

Gresh is supposedly one of the youngest Glatorian and even he was born before the Core War, still making him 100000+ years old. Which frankly makes the whole 2009 setting really fucking stupid if you think about it too hard, because you're expected to believe that nobody remembers all the ancient history of their post-apocalyptic setting even though they were all alive at the time.

In the middle I can identify:

4. A Kanohi

I think this is meant to show that Matoran and Bohrok diverged from the same "ancestor". This would make sense given the "you dared oppose your brothers" line from the Bahrag. Krana are said to be made by putting an "unknown form of energy" into energized protodermis, so the thing in the middle might be that. If that's the case then presumably a different process turns the energy into Matoran. It's hard to find any information that isn't from a Greg asspull though.
>Matoran (post The Rebuilding)
That's a Turaga I'm pretty sure, the legs look just like the ones the sets have. This would make sense given that Turaga are essentially the midway point between Matoran and Toa. This also would have been an early hint at Matoran being able to become Toa and Toa becoming Turaga.
All the stuff on the Bohrok side I'm not sure about though. The first thing would logically be a Krana, although it doesn't resemble any existing designs, unlike the other side which clearly has a Hau. I guess it's possible this graphic was made before any Krana were designed. I don't think the next thing is supposed to be a Bohrok Va since it doesn't really look like one. I'm pretty sure the Va are fully mechanical, since the Krana they carry aren't actually used by them. So it seems they aren't an evolutionarily step and are just made to serve the Bohrok. I think everything on the Bohrok side is just meant to represent hypothetical stages between the "unknown energy" in the middle and the Bohrok. Whether or not they're based on any prototype designs is anyone's guess, but it's at least clear that the design of the Bohrok was pretty much finalized by that point since that's unmistakably the silhouette of the final sets.

Kakama allowed Pohatu to get from Po-Wahi to Ko-Wahi in under a minute, I don't think any of these horse hoes can match that unless you give them that mask as well

Anyone can go faster than Kapura, but he'll get to the finish line first.

One of the few Gregisms I like is when he said that Kapura's ability isn't teleportation or some sort of integer rollover speed glitch (not that I think it's fair for someone who's otherwise so salty about MNOG to claim authority over its content). Makes it more fun if it's something so alien and metaphysically bizarre that there's no simpler way to describe it than "travelling great distances by moving slowly".

I was about to ask if Greg ever tried to retroactively make that one boring, nice to hear he actually knew better for once.

It was established back in MNOG that it wasn't teleportation, Kapura seemingly requires terrain to be walkable for his ability to work, as he said he couldn't cross the ravine near the end of the game.
