People will unironically spend 1000$ on a model kit, and refuse to buy an airbrush for $100

Lets say you buy the 1000$ death star. Where are you going to store it? It reminds me of all the people who bough the haslab unicron and stuck it in their living room and never touched it again.

At this point, just pick up the bandai x wing or tie fighter, and paint it to look like the movie prop, instead of a cheap amazon mass produced funko pop-esque collectible.

With the cost of living, $1k isn't that insane to drop on a collectible.

That lasts me like 3 weeks on rent. If adults are the main audience, it's not out of reach.

I would expect something pretty spectacular in that price range though. I have the original 10188 death star that was $400 back in 2008. That's near $600 inflation accounted for today and this new one has more than double the pieces.

I think Lego is kind of missing the plot on offering mini sets though. As a kid, picking up tiny sets on allowance money was most of the magic of the toy. Big sets were only special occasions like Christmas or a birthday.

The world had to be running slowly out of Star Wars fans who will spend this kind of money on insane impractical shit like this.

Especially since the last 15 years did not attract new fans at all, actually turned people off to the whole franchise, and the shit they are selling are the exact same repackaged 5 or so ships they have been selling since the early 80s.

How many super dooper special limited edition Millennium Falcons, X-Wings, and Vader's TIE does one buy?

I don’t really understand the appeal of the Death Star Lego sets I’d be interested to hear your guys thoughts on this.

To me the Lego deathstar no matter how big you make it looks like a deathstar tree house. It obviously is not remotely to scale so I don’t understand why you would spend hundreds of dollars on it. It’s obviously a display piece but it being intended to use with mini figures ruins the aesthetic of it. Wouldn’t it be better to have no open sections in it and to display it with micro star fighters or something that only use like 5 parts?

Furthermore if you are spending 1000 on a display piece to use with mini figures, wouldn’t it just be better to spend 600 or something on a scene which is movie accurate and to scale with the mini figures? Surely there are lots of displays they could make. Even just a few detailed deathstar hallways or a hangar or something seems like it would be more fun to use as a diorama. And if you went the 1000 dollar route I feel like they could make an amazing play set which is based on Endor or geonosis or hoth which would be more of a landscape packed with like 20 mini figures and various smaller builds and a backdrop.

It's main purpose is to milk "hardcore" Lego Star Wars fans, the type to buy anything that comes out. Many will probably get it as a centerpiece to an already big collection or aimply because they feel compelled to own the "Most Expensive Lego(tm) Star Wars(tm) Set EVER". Keep in mind it also comes with 40 minifigs many of which will certainly be exclusive to this. Lego SW fans have an obsession with minifigs to the point they'd buy a $200, $0.30 price per piece set just because it comes with one exclusive Glup Shitto fig. Lego knows this and are capitalizing on it. I'd bet that only a few years after the set retires the aftermarket for the figs alone would be enough to pay off the $1000 build.

As for the set itself in a vacuum, there's a possibility it actually turns out as a good build and play/display piece. A big ball with small vignettes and dioramas from iconic scenes inside that can be closed off with panels. The playscale Death Star was a bestseller for a reason. It's a fun concept you can't really get anywhere else, especially with model kits.

If you were to use bricklink which may or may not be a good example and you bought 600 dollars of parts you could probably make an extremely impressive minifig scale diorama that’s like 2x2 or 3x3 square feet of Felucia with all sorts of foliage and space plants and you might have enough left over for a bunch of droid and clone figures I feel like that is a lot cooler. It isn’t even the money itself that confuses me. When you bought the old starwars sets and got something like a big vehicle set you would always have a picture in the front of the box of the area they were fighting in with crap happening in the background and I’m surprised more people don’t just want to make that which you can view from multiple sides like a war diorama
For 600 or 800 or 1000 you could probably make a museum quality recreation of the battle of Endor

I have a few sofubi that I've gotten for around $3000.

There's a couple of sofubi makers out there with stuff regularly going for upwards of 20k. Way outside my price range. Even the ones I have are wildly out of my price range but I prioritized making it happen.

I can't really imagine spending that kind of money on what is essentially a mass market toy, even if it is very large. My next biggest purchase outside of stupid expensive sofubi is the super7 classics Snake Mountain which at least is sized right to feel massively expensive.

I don't know how they can double the piece count without doubling the size of it too. The shitty panels won't account for 4,000 pieces. Either it'll legit be twice the size of the others, with rooms twice as big or twice as many rooms. Or, it will be 10188 plus some added tie-fighters or other unconnected bits.
