Every part IS important. Superion without the limb guys attached is not Superion, it's Silverbolt mid-transformation. NTA but I'm checking the MMC Bruticus's transformation again and the biggest issue is Onslaught's legs transforming into Bruticus's thighs, which isn't even a big deal, just a change of axis through locking the knees into an L-shape.
Everything else can be done under a Hasbro budget but I'm sure the issue Hasbro would have with replicating it wouldn't be budget so much as accomplishing the shitty fat lanklet proportions of the cartoon models because tooners gotta toon and it's tooners all the way down in their engineering team.

I don't get it. I feel like no matter what, if you want decent articulation you're sacrificing something.
Frames make it easy to have that but obviously lose their identity and look chunkier, plus do weird shit like breaking the guys in half like on Menasor.
Otherwise you have the combiner wars look that, while more reliant on letting each limb be the entire limb, you get the awkward double joints and I'm sure other issues.

I don't see a solution unless you start adding members these teams to break up the joints.

You may not like it, but Bayverse Devastator is what all combiners should strive for. Designers should get more creative with combiner physiques, not every one of them has to be 'giant humanoid dude'. More animalistic, abstract shapes allow for more creative engineering. That, or just give every combiner team four new members to form the hands and feet. Heck, maybe five so one of them is relegated to crotch duty.

I can because Combiner Wars did that up to a 80 percent of success. Every figure was closer to ideal than Legacy frameslop.

That's the thing though, not everybody thinks of it as such a huge success because people give importance to different things. I didn't buy a single CW toy because I disliked the individual robots aesthetics, the combiner mode proportions, the individual robot arms showing, and the lack of stability when posing. Different people have different opinions. You already had Combiner Wars, and now people who doesn't mind the frames if the means having more solid toys can enjoy those.

the core optimus had really huge hips as I recall, but otherwise yeah this was a top notch design, and drones should come back as a thing for combiners.. though I'm more into beast guys, and the only way I can see that working is if the altmode is a school of fish or a queen bee and her four drones.... something like that. Beast dudes just don't really work quite that way do they.. you can't just be carrying more inanimate drone animals on your body and expect it to look right. maybe with transmetals.

It has way more problem's than that, he was a fat fuck all around. The show managed to stylize the design a bit and they can try doing that for the new toy, but it will still a cube with arms and legs and one of the laziest transformations of an Optimus toy ever.
Having said that, I would still be interesed in one if they manage to make it look cooler.

The soundbox on the original toy is what hurts it for me. Because that shit basically made his hips wide and his belly look pregnant, not to mention his back as well. I would really like a new one but I don't know how they will handle him. I got the original toy out and I found out in Super Mode he stands as tall as Commander Magmatron and SS86 Ultra Magnus. So him at that size would be preferable and accurate somewhat but that plus the trailer is definitely going to require Titan budget. No way can Hasbro remake the old toy in the same size and all under the Commander budget.

I don't have SS86 Ultra Magnus but I do have Magmatron and he stands basically as tall as the old Energon Optimus Prime toy (pretty sure SS86 is roughly Magmatron's height but I can't find a good image to illustrate that). This height is a good height for an updated Energon OP because it's big enough that he stands taller than the others but short enough that Combiners are still taller than him. If Energon OP was say Voyager height in his core robot mode then his Super Mode would bump him to maybe Megatronus height because the drones aren't that big and to me that isn't big enough. I don't know how big Hasbro would make him if they ever make him but a new updated toy that retains the original toy's size definitely pushes him into Commander+ Titan category.

When I said 80 percent I meant that for the most part, the goal was accomplished. The limb bots were good, not outstanding, but compare them to what they were upgrades of. The torso bots were alright but needed more work. I would have made them leaders and balanced the weight more evenly as well as have them come with the hands and feet of the combiners instead of being tall but light voyagers. Even with those issues, they were competently made but flawed.
I can't say that about the Legacy and post-Legacy combiners because nobody is actually combining in those. Like in >>11480346

Right. It's a shame because the concept of the team is fun, but the actual design is just not really very good. It's a bit depressing that all these years on I feel one of the better Menasors out there is the ancient FP set. I have the G2 Wildrider from that team, cool little Deluxe.
Superion is in a similar boat, albeit I feel the CW one with better feet is a perfectly servicable combiner toy. I actually used printed adapters to combine the old TFC limbs with CW Silverbolt and that looked pretty nifty, albeit definitely not very stable due to the greater weight of the TFC guys. Still, he does look cool, and those old 3P guys have some lovely jet modes.

Here is my Marvel G1 shelf.
Comic Edition is the best subline Hasbro have ever done IMO and after I got the 4 releases I needed more, so I picked up Impactor and Springer from the Wreck ‘n Rule line. Now it’s become a fun way to repurpose obsolete toys in my collection, repainting them into more comic style colours. So far I’ve done Blaster (new head, blacks painted blue or grey) and Ultra Magnus (white face, red thighs and more red on the chest) and I’m very happy with them. I'm looking forward to adding more from the Wreck 'n Doom subline and I cannot wait for Studio Series to start doing comic figures in 2027.

You can't just hope that a TF will go out distribution long enough to flip it. Legacy Breakdown is a rare case of a toy being so poorly put out that people's only alternatives are buying the figure for $180 or the whole Menasor set, which is like slightly North of that. Vortex has no such issues because it's everywhere. You can either sit on it for a few years, which will probably lead to zero profit, or you can be a bastard and do what I do when a toy can't be sold -- make it "for parts". Disconnect everything that's a peg, slider, and joint, and list it all seperately as "for parts". Are uprgrade kits for G1 figures still a thing? Thought I'd save myself the rigmarole of slogging through TroonFW2005 and ask here as the top result for the aforementioned hell-hole is a thread from 12 years ago, a single necropost 2 years ago bumped it.
The things I want are probably too niche tbf (new arms for Astrotrain, a mount for Squeezeplays beast-mode to facilitate weapon storage in that mode), but if you don't ask you'll never know...

There are of course paint scratches here and there , but at least they are not on the face.

The figure is rather stable when you tabs everything in but due to its nature I recommend you hold the figure securely by the whole torso.

The hip is just "loose"
Not the ratchet joints but the rods that are holding that joints. There are just too much movement in the crotch/hip connection that you feel like you are bending the rod when you pulling the legs in the lateral movement

Also the box can't hold the extra part when you put God Ginrai's box toghter

I really won't recommend getting Super Ginrai set beyond the msrp

Thsi set is like one gaint contradiction of construct

Super Ginrai is great but normal Ginrai just flops all over the place.
Ginrai 's torso lack any actual locking mechanism to secure the chest to the abs.
the hip uses this pull down system that is also too loose so even the clicking teeth on the side didn't help in stabilizing the legs.
And the hips for some reason instead of just friction for the side movement, they used this pseudo rachet and that too also flops around.
I say that for Ginrai the 3rd PE version is actually superior.

But for super mode, (almost) everything is secure and the joints function as you expected with God Bomber has to be added in later. I think the reason for this is how simple Super Ginrai is in term of engineering


Playing around with Ginrai again tonight just made me wish they did not designed Ginrai the way they did. There is no reason to over complicate things just because it is a MP. MP 10 is still great and that thing is simple

God Fire Convoy/Omega Prime was a big anniversary project, are the primary heroes of a tv series, was a design that hadn't received any update since its original release, and was updating a design whose last rerelease was a disaster. Had some issues with Silverbolt's wings not being able to support their weight. Fixed them by adding some tiny dots of super glue to the wing pieces that fit into the hinges. Still not a great beast mode (the decision to lock the front legs in place seems like a strange one to me), but I feel better about him overall as a figure at least.

I was thinking about it in the 3P thread after a 3P Broadside came out, but what do you think a Hasbro Broadside would look like in the tooner era? I think Evan has alluded to the idea of one being possible. Because Broadside to me is always the 3rd one (though I wish he had the toy detail colors on the legs instead of flat gray,) but I don't know if that's what they'd consider THE Broadside design for the toon checklisters.

I kind of hope they do something like Sandstorm and release toy colors/head as the main one then doing the other design as an exclusive.

And speaking of, have any of the designers mentioned the possibility of the Deluxe Vehicles coming back? Roadbuster is another of my all-time favorites and the T30 one is hot dogshit. I have all the 3P ones which are fine but I'd rather have a nice mainline one

I don't want to humor him but there are so many good examples of toonerism too. Stuff like characters being white instead of silver, painted windshields, Bumblebee not being a volkswagen, the list goes on. And like I'm sympathetic to some of it, too. Like, I don't expect most Bee toys to have facemasks because that's just not how that character is represented. But I always go back to what Hasui said about the MPs - the idea that it's about representing the idea of the character rather than replicating it. The MP shouldn't be Optimus with a weird lanky face with a nose just because the cartoon had that.

I guess it's kind of an apple test for cartoon characters. Like, if you see DCAU Batman as being only the Bruce Timm artstyle rather than being a representation of a human character, you're weird. Not being able to understand abstraction and representation makes you weird.
