SDCC is in two weeks! Looks like there is a panel entitled "The New Era of Turtle Power" that Friday. Guess we'll see what that covers.

The 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live action movie is getting a theatrical event showing August 17th and 20th. If you've never seen it before (somehow) or never saw it in the theaters this would be a fun way to enjoy the turtles!

the 1/4s look so much subtly better than the 1/9s or whatever you'd call that scale, they will never stop appealing to me.

Looks like my Spirit of Splinter is arriving soon, with his four superfluous sons who didn't even come with extra heads. I know I won't get much money for them, but I hope someone takes this opportunity to get the movie turtles for cheap. they ARE good toys.

Look more closely. This is a reinterpretation of the original toy, with a flat cranium and a big snoopy nose because the original mis-painted the more correct, narrow nose of the sculpt (sadly super7 also did this and sculpted the huge Brian Griffin nose so there's no fixing it. well maybe with putty. might try that actually.)
then they just painted his eyes as the original toy had them sculpted, with pupils, instead of how it was painted, to match the comics where his eyes are white with a heavy black outline.

i wish super7 had been allowed. those movie star turtles were huge to me. they looked so much like they COULD have been the henson sculpts, in a way, but they also weren't, they had their own unique visages. and they kept using those and re-using those for later toys, even a baffling mini playset one.

Yeah but you can see how it's a mixture of the cartoon and original toy form. In fact, it ends up resembling the Wacky Action Splinter a bit. uhh 'creepy crawlin splinter' particularly the brow.
I'm sure they did a little research and found most people think the original splinter toy looks a little doofy
but what's bugging me is i could SWEAR I saw the original '88 splinter sculpt, a prototype, something, with the nose molded differently from what we see here, more like a realistic rat, and that the big black nose was just a paint error.

Oh cmon there’s a big difference between getting the color of the figure matching and having some extra accessories. If you want the figure to look like the sketch, you can’t. If the color was right, the extra heads and accessories wouldn’t prevent you from making it look like the sketch so it’s fine. But by making the color of the bandana red, they’ve ruined any semblance of accuracy.

If you would read, I said I’m okay with extra stuff or stuff different from the sketch as long as there is options available to make it look just like the sketch. Having the red bandanas eliminates the ability completely to make them look like the sketch. You’re just completely missing my point.

Holy hell, you’re missing the whole point. Let me spell it out for you.
Red bandanas are inaccurate to the original sketch.
Turtles will never be completely accurate to the sketch because the bandanas were in fact, not red.
Product comes with extra heads and accessories not shown in sketch.
BUT the appropriate head, hands, and accessories are included so you can replicate the sketch perfectly if you want, except the bandanas are red for no apparent reason.
Product is advertised as black and white.

I’m honestly just sick of NECA TMNT releases in general. They’ve just made so fucking much at this point it’s hard to get excited for anything. I pretty much have everything I could ever want from them. The last figure I was even remotely excited for was Tatsu. I just want to see another company do more than just the core cast of characters for the 5th time and thankfully JoyToy seems to be doing that. >it still surprises me playmates isnt just buying up all these turtle molds for their own use
It's Playmates. If they think they can save a penny by not painting the wrist wraps on the Mutatin' reissues, they will save that penny.
I'm sure the idea has been raised, and someone pointed out "but the molds will be even cheaper when Super7 goes bankrupt." Hell, even then, I wouldn't put it past Brian to refuse to sell them out of spite. Kyle getting laid off did seem like some spiteful payback for him undermining Lyin' Brian when it came to the double jointed limbs for 2k3.

how can super7 claim ownership to those molds if playmates can't claim ownership to their designs (until later, when they could)

Anonymous No.11492764 >>11492791

>how can super7 claim ownership to those molds
They made the molds. Simple as.
>if playmates can't claim ownership to their designs (until later, when they could)
Now this is where it gets tricky, and the following is conjecture, and I've said this theory before.
I don't believe Playmates actually own the designs. I believe (and this is based on the fact that Super7 could make them in the first place) that the designs are owned by Varner Studios, who designed the original toys for Playmates. I believe that Super7 approached Varner for the rights to make the figures based on their designs.
Now how can Playmates stop Super7 from making them if they don't own the designs?
Master license. I guarantee that written into the contract is a clause where no other licensed company can compete with products that Playmates are releasing. Now do the Super7 Ultimates compete with the Playmates reissues in our eyes? Hell no. But to a court, I bet the similarity in the designs, even if they are aimed at a different market, would be enough to be considered a breach of contract.
All conjecture, but this makes the most sense.
>It's been said pretty clearly Viacom owns all of it.
That's not how it works for the molds. Paramount/Viacom owns the Intellectual Property rights for TMNT. That doesn't mean they own the actual molds. Playmates own the molds they made to produce figures. NECA owns their own molds. And Super7 own their molds. If those companies lost the license, they wouldn't be able to make figures with the molds, but the actual molds are still their property that they own, and they could choose to sell them to another company that now has the license to make figures, or melt down the steel into a paperweight if they wanted.

naw, Varner was just contracted. That'd be like saying Four Horsemen or whatever their name is, owns the S7 designs they made.
but yes I suppose owning the DESIGN of the toy does not quite mean the same thing as owning the rights to reuse the molds, no. But that would be a piffling license fee at most. Lots of toys practically give their molds away for that kind of thing
Anonymous No.11492816 >>11492820

Like I said, conjecture. But we don't know the details of Varner's contract back then. It seems like Varner did retain some level of ownership of their designs, which is why they are allowed to sell prints and books featuring their concept art on their website. There is also the issue that many of Varner's designs were used for non-Playmates merchandise, which was the loophole we thought would allow Super7 to continue the Ultimates designs. These two things are what leads me to believe that the reason that Super7 never needed permission to make the Playmates designs was because Playmates do not own the designs at all.
Anonymous No.11492820 >>11492832

welllllll selling prints and books of concept art has always kinda been a thing you're allowed to do, you just make sure to put all rights reserved by viacom yatta yatta on it.. the tricky thing is if you added any new material, or tried publishing anything new that you weren't already contracted with them to draw.. then it'd be messy.
>that loophole
yeah what the fuck.. wish that had gone through. Playmates will suffer someday for what they've done.

actually I do think the costume is part of what went wrong. She has this large collar you have to deal with, and it's hard to integrate her shoulders into her torso without leaving this unwanted ridge on top of them as if she's wearing a really thick shawl.

The other major issue is that the toon figures are simply not to scale. Both neca and S7 ran into an issue when they realized the turtles are LITTLE guys, almost all the other characters are much taller than them, so.... you start out "this is a good scale" then "shit, we can't make everyone else that big" so a lot of the toon figures are undersized.. and for April they tried to split the dif by having her be shorter (so she's not Shredder's height), but with a bigger head. but it didn't work. So then they tried to redo her, with a better head sculpt, and redid her upper torso and neck only, to make her taller.. but that also didn't fucking work, because now it's disproportionate. you had to redo the whole figure from scratch.
Anonymous No.11497509
>>11497132
neca does unfortunately often go for that "oh you like double elbows? well, here's a break in the sculpt, let's make that a second elbow" when... no, guys. No.
>>11497193
yeah see, at this size, the turtles could actually be guys in costumes, like the movie versions.. which is why the movie turtles were taller (but still shorter than most people. asians, but not pocket-size asians.)
the 87 TMNT are supposed to be REAL short. Three Stooges size.. too small for any human to be in the suit unless it was all little asian girls. It's part of what makes them so special compared to other hero franchises. they're not the biggest and most imposing guys around, they're not 6'3" slabs of muscle with huge jaws.
Anonymous No.11497511

Scale within the line is more important than them scaling with other figures. Especially since there are so few toylines that match with the style of the toon Turtles line.

Anon I already acknowledged that in the original FMF post. That's why I think they're the only game in town who would bother. Boss Fight is too PC while NECA probably thinks its too much of a gamble and not worth the squeeze. Aside from FMF I could maybe see Loosecollector taking a stab but his bread and butter leans way more towards monsters and roided up 90's heroes. We'd sooner see a modern day Ultraverse toyline.
