Yeah, its like they are gatekeeping with the prices. Macross is very similar. Is it a license fee or is it more that those fans in japan are only interested in high end stuff? Kamen rider, ultra man and godzilla all offer lower end figures that look decent but are all vinyl type figures.

I think it's the demographic. Classic Super Robot stuff is marketed to 70's kids in Japan who are now in their 60's with nice savings and can afford expensive hobbies.

I'd really like to see Mazinger and Koji given a second shot at western localization, but I also recognize how rocky the entertainment landscape has become in recent years. Devilman Crybaby did well but it also caught the attention of some undesirables. There's always a double edged blade with these things sadly. Still I'd kill for a Neo-Shogun Warriors esque line hovering around a 20-30 dollar price point. Think Shogun Warriors with joints, with the bigger names being released in deluxe retailer exclusive gift sets.

Something like that could come by way of Walmart or Amazon but there's nobody pushing for it y'know? Even those Walmart exclusive Goldlok Toys renditions of Iron Giant and Robby the Robot were a surprise at the time of their release. Hard to imagine lightning striking twice like that.

You've done me a favor by mentioning Macross. How is it that the owners of Robotech havent followed in the footsteps of WEP with Voltron? Disregarding personal feelings over their shows, SO many collectors would chomp at the bit for an affordable Valkyrie. Harmony Gold should just work something out with Playmates and try to offer that. They could even offer a cheeky repaint homaging Jetfire. As long as the engineering was comparible to their Voltron a Robotech collection could have some strong legs!

Just remembered Mezco never released their Gigantor either. Shame.

GN-U DOU was one that never got the attention it deserved. The entire range was nothing but the deepest of deepcuts but it didnt take. I had Baxingar and Sasuraiger for a time myself, they were fun but frequent posing would lead to the armor panels popping off.

Biggest issue to me was that the sculpts on some were "too perfect".
They didn't leave a lot, if any, clearance between the parts so certain joints were limited as hell or flat out blocked, stuff like side-skirt armor kept popping off and, on the earlier ones like Goshogun and Braiger, the paint became prone to scratches.
I modified some of the more notorious ones to increase their range of motion:
Dancouga Nova, for example, got the tubes (those where the hip armor parts on the OG Dancouga are connected) on the hip joints sanded down so the legs can move more freely and I cut out the bars that attach Sasuraiger's thigh armor to the frame so those parts are now capable of sliding down and away from the fixed skirt, GREATLY increasing the posability of the legs.

You can also sorta blame Revos and their initial flat 1900 Yen price for that.
GN-U Dous with their almost 4000 and barebones accessoires (they actually planned add-on packs but IIRCY only the ones for the Valks were released) looked overly expensive at first glance in comparison despite the higher quality materials used and their more complex construction.

Speaking of ill-fated lines - anyone remember Mode:Lock?
It was a collab between Kotobukiya and Atelier Sai, featuring cheap-ass model kits of various mechs that were almost entirely made up of Lego Constraction-esque balljoints and compatible with Sai's BJPM system.

The whole line was kinda shit and probably the only worthwhile thing these days that came out of it were the Skygirls suits while everything else got vastly superior renditions these days.

Fuck man we really lost out. Despite not being familiar with large swaths of the line up, I did love the few figures I had. Even with the issue both I and >>11493784 mentioned, they did end up feeling like then modern day Action Masters or something. Angular geometric robot guys of all different shapes and sizes designed with the express purpose of kicking ass and taking names. Im sure they all had vastly different origins and stories I just liked to to anthropomorphize them ala transformers or those random sentient robots they fought in Megas XLR.

FMF has a new ongoing LCBH/Indie Spotlight-esque collection coming out, thus far debuting with just Tick and Rocketeer. My hope is that they somehow shiff gears just to include these two down the road. Otherwise I might just have to pick up customizing and repupose one of those Hydra stompers into a Big Guy.
