Takua was intended to be unique from the very beginning, perhaps not a matoran of light, but something custom. That's why he always wandered around. Of course, keeping colour consistency through a transformation seems to be a crapshoot anyway, since the Turaga use very different colours from their Matoran/Toa Metru selves and the Inika were similarly completely different and even had some changes as Mahri, although I guess neither change used the convential Toa Power process either.

Nearly every canister had some sort of extra gimmick. The main purpose is to give you a unique way to store the set (particularly for travel if you want to take it somewhere without losing parts); any secondary function was a nice bonus. The Mata and Nuva both had the axle holes to stick heads into to display Kanohi, the Rahkshi had a spot to store Kraata and you could peel the label off to make it a sort of stasis tube, and all the Metru era ones could store a disk/spinner. The Piraka and Inika both had "try me" buttons for their respective light-up features. Then the Mahri weren't really in canisters anymore so they couldn't be used for storage, but they had a bunch of connection points which could be used to hold their gear or as a barricade with their blaster as a turret (as advertised on the back of the box). The Phantoka ones didn't really have any features but were at least actual canisters again (and I honestly appreciate how weird and cool they look). That was the true endpoint for canisters having extra gimmicks, as neither the Mistika nor any of the Glatorian ones were anything beyond just containers.

Once again reading through this thread I am reminded of even more reasons why the Lego group are faggots. I have been saying for years they could at least give us minimal support by making a Lego website order exclusive set once or twice a year which is random old parts but molded in unique colors for people who make MOCs. But even this is too hard for them. these would sell out quickly I’m sure but it just is too much of an inconvenience. this way we do not have to buy people’s resin casted shit but the fact people are casting and selling parts in different colors is proof there is a market for it.

This stuff also would have been successful as legoland merch as well. It would sell tickets because people would have gone there just to buy this shit.


Today we would have a lot of these parts still floating around being sold and used for various things but it was just too much effort for them. Yet every other year it seems like they make slop shit like 600 dollar starwars sets.


The sad thing? They could have done what I suggested and thrown it all into large sets and sold those for like 300.00 and people still would have bought them. They could have marketed it as something like the ultimate bionicle creator set.

the colours got changed and a lot of old molds were trashed, iirc only a handful of pre 2004 parts got used in sets afterwards and they were mostly for one off themes until about 2008 when lego changed all the connection joints

That said, Vakama and Nuju Hordika both had completely non-metallic weapons (the other 4 had silver dual-moulded as the soft part but still using their base colour for the handle) and Nuparu Inika had a dark blay gun/drill/whatever. Onua Mistika also had a black shell piece for his shitty mandatory launcher, which I suppose sort of counts because it's unique to that set.

I think the worst part of this set is how bottom-heavy it is. The legs are so huge and overdesigned meanwhile everything above the waist is basically just an inika torso with not enough padding to make it look bigger.

I normally keep my displayed retail sets kosher but when I still had mine out I ended up gutting parts from the shield to make the torso bulkier. It looked pretty good but I can't find any pictures of it.
