The only thing going for this company was its DC license. i really liked the DC License, because it allowed todd to make enough money to make spawn shit. Now with no money coming in, I don't see what mcfarlane can do.

Things Mcfarlane is doing:
>sports
>statues
>anime
>video games

Honestly, the only one of these, i see doing well long term is anime, and anime fans would rather have figma, or shf, but maybe they are meant to appeal to children with less money.

Short of a animated spawn show, mcfarlane is fucked. Its like watching a huge bubble burst, and everyone at the company, is sayingit'll be fine but it won't.

If you can, give us all the early spawn characters in 6 inch form with import style joints, like mafex. It won't save you, but i'll like you alot more, and probably shill you.

I waited until sdcc to post this, because i thought they'd have some secret trump card like "we bought the shonen jump license" or "we bought dandandan" or some crazy thing, but all todd did was say "we have non articulated sports statues" and "enjoy this static pose, aaron judge"

The thing that killed his Spawn figures is the lack of paint. At least he somewhat embraced them being actual action figures by putting more articulation in there. It works alright for some of them, but some are hindered mostly by the actual character's design.

But these things look terrible when it comes to the painted detail. Paint and detail were the major thing the Spawn figures excelled at in the late 90s/early 2000s.

I don't know how popular they all are, but he has like, 10 Spawn books out right now. The main book is getting close to issue 400 now, and even some of the side books like Gunslinger and Scorched are already approaching issue 50. I guess maybe he's just riding on that.

Todd's doing a whole bunch of Mortal Kombat II figures, which will likely sell well. He said he wasn't allowed in the past by the licensor to make figures from older games, despite that he was aware that the first 3 games printed money. Because of the Legacy Kollection it creates an excuse to make toys for the old games.

There's a new Spawn film on the way called King Spawn. By Blumhouse so it should have an ok budget. That should give Spawn some juice to continue.

His prices have skyrocketed within the past year with a notable quality increase only in the look of Doom guy and Lilith (probably not in articulation though).

McFarlane Toys will not be able to sustainably charge these new prices and have people buy their full line of products. They may have some good sellers here or there when they have something no one else ever made (NCR Ranger), but the fact is they are still mostly selling $20-25 quality figures for now $28, $35, and $60 price points. They never raised prices this much this fast before, let that sink in. People's perception of McFarlane Toys will not make this drastic change sustainable. It's still mostly seen as cheap, poorly articulated figures that occasionally look good or have a lot of sculpted detail (and even that is not a given anymore).

-Doom won't work because all Todd ever sells is Doom guy and variations on Doom guy and he wouldn't ever expand to cover the iconic demons--even at a $20 price point, let alone now. So he is very limited in what he can make and how big this IP can be for him.

-Fallout has the potential to be bigger for him because there are not many offerings in this space. If he is a fool and leans towards the TV show, all is lost. If he makes mostly game figures, he might have a chance, but at $60 it is going to be very rough sailing and most likely only the most popular offerings will sell while everything else will languish.

One of the huge downsides of him doing $60 toys is simply that people will not buy -- and thus he cannot make -- a wide variety of offerings. He can only make the most popular sure sellers unless he wants to lose retailers. One of the very things that lets $20-25 lines thrive is that they can be impulse buys and niche characters can sell. They may not sell well but you can sustain the line. At $60, I don't care what whales at /toy/ may think, there is not a wide enough audience who will buy a wide swath of lesser aspects of the Fallout world like specific NPCs or some of the less iconic monsters. You might be able to sell a Deathclaw or maybe a supermutant at $60 (though not without risk), but what about generic ghouls, mirelurks or radscorpions? Far too risky and niche for such a high price.

-TMNT won't work since there's too much competition and he is in a niche scale, and it includes the price of a comic that people either already read or don't want to read.

-Marvel statues have already mostly failed given how often they go to clearance or sale. Maybe some of the more popular ones sell out. Also he just raised the price of the highest end ones from $50 to $60 which won't be a welcome surprise to those who do collect them.

-MK will depend on the price point, if he goes $25 he has a chance to sustain retail interest for awhile.

They're going to float off their DC money until they find another big license to float them. They've done this before, they were on death's door in the 2000's until they got the Halo license, the TWD at the peak of that, thye had a rough patch until the fake Lego sets they did with Steven Universe, which sold so well they managed to get the money for the DC license.
The DC license has probably bought in more capital for McFarlane in 5 years than any other license, and they show in how they milked it.
And unlike how it's traditionally been handled by companies like Mattel and Hasbro, Mcfarlane gives no fucks about reusing bodies across licenses(Martian manhunter for the 70's Spawn), which means they can just reuse any bucks as they want for any other licenses. Theoretically they can just use the main bodies for other superhero characters all they want.

Gears fan base and exposure will more than double now that its going to be on Playstation. Gears Reloaded this year and Gears E-Day next year. Movie and animated Netflix series in development.

Mcfarlane already works with Microsoft for Doom and Fallout, and they've done Gears figures in the past.

>well long term is anime, and anime fans would rather have figma, or shf,
McFarlane's Anime figures are a mixed bag to be honest, half of them are decently good but then one of them just looks bad. There are other companies that do anime figures way better than McFarlane and even though they're on a cheaper side if you can't afford of how much Figuarts is costing. The Demon Slayer line was decently good but a lot of collectors will go for the Figuarts because they're simply better than a domestic anime figure. The My Hero Academia line was horrible "Todd Didn't Care" and I'm glad Figuarts has the line.

>meant to appeal to children
His figures are meant for adult collectors,it's like Todd forgot what demographic his company was for.Sure he did those 5 inch figures but they're just mini statutes that do nothing.Demon Slayer and My Hero Academia are for older teen/adult demographic and it baffles me that he put a 12+ on these figures despite both of these two animes have blood, swearing and some not suitable things to view to children.

I own few of his MHA figures and honestly their outdated and would rather replace them with SH Figuarts anyday.but I'll give him credit for giving us All For One.

kek those are absolutely ok for preteens, they're shonen. American TV standards being so puritan doesn't count, and now that everything is streaming there's absolutely younger viewers watching.
MHA would seem like a kid's anime to me as a 12 year old, because it is.

Considering this figure was released months and even a year ago, this was possibly the only character from the game he did.But for 60 fucking dollars,HELLLL NOOO.

I had issues with McFarlane's Anime figures of how just wrong they are, manly the face sculpts look like bootlegs.Mind you If NECA did a Anime Line like Hunter X Hunter,They would've done a hella lot better than McFarlane Because NECA is the Chad and does what the fans want but Todd is the Virgin that he doesn't listen to us.

McFarlane's Demon Slayer figures aren't that bad. Well, most of them, anyway. Some of the early ones aren't great, but at least in the newer ones, he actually seems to be adopting import-style tech like face plate swapping, and more accessories.

Some of his recent anime figures are putting his DC and Spawn figures to shame, and you'd figure he'd be putting waaaaaay more technology, engineering, and care into the western comic character's he's doing...especially his own.

We don't have an exact way of knowing how much influence he has but we can gleam from past interviews on what he has said to get an idea.

Stuff like the DC movies are basically contractual obligation, same way Hasbro is forced by Disney to produce every piece of Marvel and Star Wars piece of media that comes out nowadays.

There are characters he and by extension fans do want to get made but Warner Bros basically has final say on what he can and can't produce.

That also goes for any of the licenses he currently has and has had in the past. The Licensor has final say on what they want out in the market so it's entirely possible we're only getting mostly Doom Slayer or Space Marine variants because that's just what Microsoft/GW wants.

He at least seems to take fan feedback somewhat seriously. That was how we got wired cloth capes to appear in his figures. Said in an interview he was looking to do a new Spawn with a gigantic flowing cape like the comics but wired and the person interviewing him said he can pass on some customs he bought in the past to give Todd an idea on how to do them and Todd seemed genuinely interested.

Diamond Select going bankrupt doesn't automatically mean he can just apply for the Marvel Select part of the Marvel license. He seemed to imply either Hasbro or Disney were either blocking anyone attempting to fill that niche or just were uninterested.

Take what you will from all of this. I've probably missed a few things but these just come to mind from all the stuff I've watched.

MK was made for Todd. Totally vapid, edgy and empty of substance. They deserve each other.

I'm surprised more people aren't outraged about Atlan. That's like literally bootleg tier bait and switch

>7 inch scale
Motherfucker, why? Why make your toys incompatible with other lines by creating a new scale? And why make them so damn big? So you can charge more?

At the SDCC panel they they clarified that they're doing figures for MK1 and MK3 as well and plan to do different looks from each game. Count on Todd re-doing and repainting all the ninjas multiple times.

It's complete dogshit, but most people don't care about the mech cause those parts of the game sucked.

plenty of lines they work with. Diamond Select/MArvel select, Neca, Chinese DC licenses...
Marvel Legends don't even work with other Hasbro 6'' lines, let alone other 6'' lines in general.

I can't believe Todd isn't embarrassed to have put this out. Like it isn't advertised as a statue, if it had been then it would not be so bad, although it's a boring pose for a statue. But to put this out an call it an action figure just because they know articulation sells more than statues, how desperate are they?
