How much of your childhood Lego did you keep? I'm thinking of selling most of my bricks and just keeping a little build with sentimental value.

I really wanna collect some spooky shit for this fall, I currently snagged the Hidden Side train for relatively cheap and I have a chink Evil Dead set coming along with the Monster Fighters haunted house.

I want to get more MF stuff because I wanna do some Van Helsing esque shit but the castle is at the cheapest $260 and not sure it's even original. So I'm debating whether to keep getting Hidden Side sets (the castle for that is also expensive af) or try to slowly gather the few MF sets I find.

I have decades worth of lego from my family. Most of it was mine but I also have two brothers who were into lego. They both outgrew it and when they saw me organizing it a few years ago they just let me have their old stuff. most of the collection is in really good condition surprisingly considering the run down condition of our other toys. I gave it all away to younger family members. So eventually when I got back into Lego I rebuilt but with new sets. Was honestly disappointing seeing how much cheaper modern Lego plastic is to the 80s/90s stuff. Also had to go through the era of brittle brown/dark blue/dark red. Just finished 3d printing a 1/4 of the 2552 raised baseplate (too big as a single element), with some improvements to the underside. A bit of sanding later and I'm actually surprised that the studs connect and hold as good as they do. Might actually research molding and thermoforming plastic if the rest end up as good as this one, and doing some custom raised baseplates of my own.

What is the definitive retro (pre 2000s) castle set? I mostly collect space but have been wanting to get into castle and start with something big.

They’re cool sets but too expensive in the aftermarket. Why not just make a castle moc? You can make it in a retro style. Old sets were very basic in technique. And if you are unsure of how to recreate you can find old instructions online or buy instructions for cheap.

Was stacking 100 1x1 round plates and tiles that serve no purpose and aren't visible at all, and 50 2x1 plates that aren't even visible, instead of 2x2 bricks, really necessary for this set? Without them the set wouldn't have 613 pieces, but about 450.

Each bigger box contains a top, white box split into 8 compartments and a transparent, bottom one that can be split with plastic "separators." There's one long separator and a total of 6 shorter ones. You can remove any and all of them, depending on how you want to arrange them.
In the area marked by pink I placed 60 2x4 bricks. So, the full bottom, transparent compartment should fit about 480 2x4 bricks. (maybe more, if you remove the separators). I use the top one for smaller pieces and plates.
You can also stack them.
I bought the two 3-story versions. Each one of them has 3 big transparent containers and 3 white ones.
The only flaw - the modular separators are quite flimsy, but if you put the bricks in there, they shouldn't move around.

Exabricks has a Lego built Baxter building on his instagram story. Doesn’t look like it’s a modular scale. Looks microscaled. I wonder if that could be the $120 18+ set for January.

I've started to really like the 4+ sets because they kinda do what I wish mainline lego did, simple builds that get the idea across, but not coated in 1x1 tiles to hide all the studs and inflate the price. And in general, you get a bigger toy out of them for the price.

When did lego bring back base plates? I have been out of the loop, and basically stopped collecting lego, but recently saw lego brand base plates in stores again.

I'd advise you to build all castles you're considering buying in Studio first, because most of them turn out to be nice from basically one of two sides, but with the insides being pretty empty and the remaining sides to be complete afterthoughts. 6085, 6090, 6086.. you'll see they're mostly empty space. I think you may want to grab smaller sets first to make sure that's really a collection you want to start. Imo castle is pretty expensive for what it offers you, stock-wise.

Just really fucking sucks how bad prices have become, love the look of the dark forest sets but the base is like $500 everywhere I look. Top/bottom layers are 5 solid layers,
Triangle infill @15%.
Flow: 85% (Ender 3 V2)
Extra perimeters if needed: yes
Extra perimeters on overhangs: yes
Avoid crossing perimeters: yes
Detect bridging perimeters: yes

No supports, only modifiers to make the studs completely solid. Machine is decently calibrated but I got some stringing from jumping from stud to stud.

Material is a natural/transparent PLA, a bad color for photos (but in my experience the best for PLA moisture/storage problems), I'll attach some bricks in the next images to better show tolerances.

Modifications on the baseplate are:
The base isn't a thin ~1/3 plate anymore, I extruded it in to be slightly taller than a brick (because I'm dumb and rushed it). It's completely solid on the underside, and completely infilled inside. I did not bevel the corners.

Each part weighs in the 100-200g. They clutch decently, 3 of the middle top studs were enough to hold each in the air (other studs also clutch decently but the leverage becomes too much for such a low number of studs).

Not really, and they never will fully disclose it. Market research is basically a trade secret, they won't ever reveal the entirety of reasons, we can only infer, speculate and swim through what's likely and what's propaganda.

IMO, one of the semi-valid reasons is: not all parts are produced at all times, and then from the ones that are, you gotta run pick a set of colors to run for whatever time. They have a set of IIRC 1-2k different elements that they keep at production at any given time nowadays. Back in the 90s apparently they suffered problems from running 3-5k different molds at the same time. It was too costly according to some sources.

Nowadays imo it's because they control the nostalgia/vintage market and they don't want their 'collectors' to stop giving them cash, they make more long term money by releasing hyper expensive exclusive stuff, using the 'pay this or end up without your beloved zelda' strategy. People who invested a lot in lego would be mad and stop buying newer sets.

I've got three Ikea tables set up for my medieval fantasy diorama I'm building, it takes up most of the room on them so far while I also have a smaller Japanese themed smaller diorama tucked in the corner of the tables.

i dabble in both, lego sets are on average more expensive than model kits (wargames not included) but has a fairly high cost of entry for all the supplies to get going where with lego you just get the set

I do both. There’s an English History autist in his 60s on YouTube called Lindybeige who made a video 8(?) years ago about making terrain and houseswith a hot wire tool and insulation foam. He’s okay at it nothing special but it inspired me to get started. Curiously he only made the one video about it and then went back to history stuff. But I’ve been doing it ever since then. You can't put hats on hair like it could be done with Playmobil. Hair can't be in a helmet. You always need helmets or hats AND separate hair if you want to show your figures without helmet or hat. Have a girl with flowy hair? Too bad, you can't give her any of your 157 hats without her looking stupid. Have a hat with hair? Well, you can't use it for figures with different hair. It is a fun build and an excellent part pack. I actually used two in this moc which was an exercise in kit bashing dark blue sets. I only removed the windshield and tacked parts on the underside and to cover the seats. The wings are taken from set 31039 blue power jet but placed backward and modified to fold up. The dark blue quinjet was the main part donor, but this thing is more than 50% bigger. It also fit a 70826 Rex-treme Offroader inside.

I've never bought a bricklink designer set, but does anyone else really dislike them? I think they lack Lego quality. They all lack that expert builder touch and designer quality you expect from Lego directly. I also feel like they are using it to just satisfy fans of old lego themes in some way so they don't have to make any more Icons sets. Like since Medieval Market Village, it seems like they are not going to make any more castle themes because they have all these half baked designer program sets. Well personally, I don't want any of the castle sets in the designer program because I don't think they are very good.
