To me, Cavill was Superman trying very hard not to be Superman.

No red trunks because it's ridiculous, darker blue because he is more serious I guess, chainmail-like armor so it is technicool, when asked about the S on his chest he comes up with a "reasonable" explanation. When he fights, he thinks of himself first and only then he addresses others. In order to escape the fame of blue scout, he is always brooding and acting pragmatic. The arc with his father is absolutely laughable, basically teaching people not to try to save each other.

It came in an era that everyone thought Superman was a ridiculous character to be onscreen, it tried really hard to stay away from Reeves' and the comics. In the end, it's just as ridiculous, if not more for not embracing the fun of the character.

You absolutely can make Superman more sci-fi but some people are just more defensive of it because Superman has sort of an idol-like status where people have large swathes of ideas about him that they project. Like whether or not he should still say American Way or not.

>To me, Cavill was Superman trying very hard not to be Superman.
because you have no clue what Superman is about and Why
>No red trunks because it's ridiculous,
no, because his costume isn't made by himself and in the 1930s but it comes directly from Krypton, so no trunks because Shuster's Krypton didn't have them and cape and shield because radio show version had them while also being canon towards Shuster , and because costume being from Krypton is time economy to explain why it is As tough as him, just like in comics which you never read
>darker blue because he is more serious I guess
in actual comics his blue is same as "blue" of his BLACK hair and Batman's BLACK cowl, just like Robin isn't supposed to have bright green parts on His costume
>chainmail-like armor so it is technicool,
just cool
>when asked about the S on his chest he comes up with a "reasonable" explanation
It was never established in Original comics why he has S on his chest AND he never calls Himself Superman in ALL of his first interactions before he becomes even mildly known to the public in Action Comics #6 as "Superman" , again a name that was given to him by George Taylor, Lois Lane and narrator. Just like how before Superman The Movie he never says "Truth , Justice and the American way" because it is drivel for him to say that BUT original name for people of Krypton is Race of Supermen, so somehow people of Earth guessed his race name and started calling him by his race. So in the end it is the same in terms of canon.
>When he fights, he thinks of himself first and only then he addresses others.
he isn't suicidal nor knows how tough he actually is just like original Superman, and you are , as usual, another lying psychopath because in the first ever scene he saves bunch of people DESPITE knowing if he even makes it out alive

>The arc with his father is absolutely laughable, basically teaching people not to try to save each other.
No, father Kent's purpose was always to instill secret identity ever since 1934 and official Superman #1 1939, concept of secret identity by itself means that some people WILL die OR there will be no more Clark Kent/Superman , unless invisible super speed is established which it only was established in Superman #12--17 Not in Superman #6 where Lois just like Jonathan in MoS ALSO tells him not to save her in order to save More people instead
>It came in an era that everyone thought Superman was a ridiculous character to be onscreen, it tried really hard to stay away from Reeves' and the comics. In the end, it's just as ridiculous, if not more for not embracing the fun of the character.
SnyderVerse is literally the first time actual comics were adapted. From the Why of secret identity to even a neck snap (Action Comics #805)
Superman The Movie is literally The first ever deconstruction of Superman and therefore of superhero. Starting with making Superman idea to be completely alien in nature, Lois Lane saying "swell" is outdated vs Lois Lane in,for example, Action Comics #47, Superman , again, actually saying the "Truth, Justice and the American way" line that makes absolutely No sense towards vigilante who works as a reporter who lies to his readers every single day, and it ends with absolutely canon breaking moment of Lois Lane dying AND Superman doing something so irresponsible as reversing time to bring back someone from the dead and does that successfully unlike comics back Then, only The Spectre or Supergirl by the same Siegel could bring back the dead.

Almost every head sculpt done of Henry has been unfortunate. There was one decent McFarlane, out of three or four attempts, but almost all the imports were painful to look at.

>>11518378
It's not 'retrospective' - people liked Henry as an actor or as Supes (and in some occasions both) and could still dislike or even hate the Snyder hack jobs being passed off as "kino" - he was good, for example, in The Man From Uncle, but awful in both looks and dialogue in Argyle and badly directed in many scenes by Guy Ritchie in Gentlemen.

>>11518379
Hoult claims 6'2" but admits he rounds down and on his health charts in the UK it's slightly higher, Coronswett claims 6'4" and he can look taller than Hoult even when Hoult isn't bald. They did plenty of promo together it's very clear and obvious, especially still photography at premieres.

Nothing you say will stop the Jonathan Kent scene in MoS.
Like the idea behind it is fine "you can't save everyone."
But it's written and shown in such a stupid fashion.

Clark could easily run to his dad get him out and run back without it even looking like he has powers. He was an athletic looking teen who you would assume is running on adrenaline to save his dad. No one would think twice about it.

It worked better in the OG movie when he died of a heart attack because it still pushes the message that Clark/Superman can't save everyone while not being as stupid as "No don't save me even though you easily could!"

The problem wasn't just Snyder.
Goyer, the writer, also wrote a lot of this shit. People credit him as a 'comic book guy' - but he really wasn't. He came up as a production assistant (e.g. gopher) when Geoff Johns was also doing that to pay the bills and, Johns, who at least did grow up reading comic books, helped him get some gigs, including that stupid Superman "Gives Up" His US Citizenship story - Goyer has always been that kind of writer, lazy and into shock twists because he lacks genuine imagination and creativity.
He's lucked into positions, especially now truly failing upwards, in spite of serious misfires like Krypton, because he's learned to hire competent people like for Netflix The Sandman adaptation and also because production studios and the network/streamers have forced it on him.

tl;dr yeah, it was stupid as fuck and pointless to boot

> Superman The Movie is literally The first ever deconstruction of Superman and therefore of superhero.

โ€œDeconstructionโ€ is what dumb people call media that misses its own point. MoS is a โ€œdeconstructionโ€ in that it fundamentally misunderstands who Superman is as a person, then goes off on a preachy 3 movie tangent about that misunderstanding.

People often forget that when MoS came out it wasnโ€™t really marketed as Snyders Superman, but Nolans, who had producer credit. Melodramatic brooding paramilitary Batman was the biggest comic book movie of all time, and Snyder being not especially good at what he does just tried to take that framework and apply it to a character it fundamentally does not work for.
