New HLJ email regarding tariffs and de minimis
>The situation surrounding international shipping to America is once again changing. As announced in a White House press release, the currently existing rules on ‘De Minimis,’ which exempts shipments valued at under $800 from tariffs, is expected to be removed.

>The recent announcement implies that a flat-rate fee will be added to shipments valued at under $800, based on the effective IEEPA Tariff rate decided by the US government. These charges begin at $80 dollars and increase depending on the tariff rate of the country of origin.

>This means that our currently available shipping methods to the US could be affected. However, we cannot verify with certainty that the JP post methods will definitely be affected.

>Therefore, we would like to advise customers in the US to prepare for the possibility of tariffs also being applied to JP post methods following August 29th.

>In particular, we recommend utilizing the Private Warehouse. As we have recently experienced delays, currently we are not enforcing our 6-month storage limit, and allowing customers to store for an indefinite period of time.

>If you are shipping to the US, we recommend shipping as soon as you can, however, please be aware that we are still experiencing some delays, and we highly recommend using the Private Warehouse if you are concerned about your shipment arriving in time. Depending on the time of your shipment request, we cannot guarantee arrival before the 29th.

So HLJ just sent out an email last night/this morning. De minimis is gone and that anything under $800 is going to be subject to a $80 flat rate fee.
This probably just fucked buying anything overseas unless you’re getting a lot and at that point you’re pushing the $800 mark. I would say this might just make buying imports from BBTS worth it, but they’ll probably just raise their prices as well.
How is /toy/ going to deal with this? This might be the end for a lot of people in this hobby.

The $80 minimum is if it goes through the post office from what I understand, FedEx/DHL will likely use the correct percentages of declared value. Basically don’t use EMS anymore unless your package is actually approaching $800 in value.

Accept that I won't be able to get everything I used to get before. I'll have to learn to be more satisfied with what I do have. It will help curate my consumption habits. I have three other hobbies, which have been mostly neglected lately, so I will probably focus on those instead.
On the other hand, I still will be buying from overseas. I will just have to be more careful and effecient about grouping packages together. I have quite a few things on PO that will be hit regardless. My only hope is things cool down and it goes to ONLY a % based fee (and hopefully no more than 15%). The $80 flat fee is extremely brutal.

Anonymous No.11521606

no, airmail goes through the post office too and will face the exact same fees
They will likely reinstate DHL after this as the entire reason they were not using it was they deemed the risk of tariffs too high

First I want to show you all my Japanese figurine collection."

>*moves to next room lined with deltofs and the most expensive Japanese figure lines*
>"And this room is my favorite. You see this one, this is the best figure- I tell you what folks, we've been waiting for this one for years. See, you can take his gun out. Look at that. Ain't that wonderful."
>*continues playing around with the Char figurearts*
>"Anyways, I had to make sure we restricted importing to avoid competition with the top CHINA collectors. They're sending their worst I tell you. And little rocket man, I told you I'd win this competition. I now have the BEST figure collection in the world- the BEST. There's nothing like it. Okay, thank you for your time folks. Americans are past the stage of mass factory slave labor, we still produce model kits and other toys in the states (Ertl surprisingly still exists), but again, cost of labor and materials would affect the cost of the toy itself.

The two-party system in the US is basically all a sham anyway. They all lie, cheat, and steal and the vast majority of things both parties do anyway, and then hide when they do it, and then blame the other side when the other side gets caught doing it.. Nobody votes anymore because they actually believe in what one candidate or the other is doing, they're pretty much all voting just to keep the other guy out. Neither Biden nor Kamala seemed to actually have any sort of plan or policy they were running on, they basically ran on the "we're not Trump." And they fucked up so bad during Biden's administration that people wanted no more of that, so they were willing to vote in a guy who is an openly crooked con artist who has done nothing but bankrupt his businesses.

The US needs an actual, moderate third party/independent to get in to show that the Liberals and Conservatives need to knock their shit off. And it looks kind of like that may be a growing movement, because now there are just as many voters that are registered independents as there are Dems or Republicans. They just need to actually vote independently.

Not a bad idea, but how would that work for a company like BBTS that doesn’t actually make anything and just imports? It’s not like they can force those companies to come over here.
Either way, no company is going to move manufacturing here, by the time they could even start doing it here his term would be almost over and whoever is next will surely drop the tariffs almost immediately. And that’s if he doesn’t drop them by Christmas, because otherwise kids might not get shit this year.

This is extremely naive. The tariffs would need to be far higher to force American manufacturing of toys, and what would likely happen is just US toys as we know them would change (not be high POA action figures I assure you) and/or no longer be sold here because people would not be willing to pay the cost. Products only exist because people are willing to pay the cost of their manufacturing, shipping, taxes, and a bit of profit. Chinese labor costs are still far, far lower than American ones thus it is still cheaper to make toys in China.

What might instead happen is eventually some country that has low tariff rates on the US and low wages would see businesses start factories and begin importing toys to the US from there. But that is unlikely given these tariffs are not law but executive order made under the guise of an "emergency" that can be removed in 4 years. So it would not be a good investment to undertake an endeavor as costly as starting a factory just due to that. Same reason why toy factories wont be set up in the US really.

>>11525024
>What should have been done is make it illegal for these companies to pass the buck to the consumer.
This mindset comes from a well meaning place because corporations are fake, artificial "people" under the law that de facto exist only to profit off the suffering of actual, real people. But it is impossible to do. Rules and regulations have unintended consequences. The unintended consequence of this would be companies no longer selling toys to Americans because they could not make a profit without passing the tariffs on to the consumer. Toy stores would end up closing as they would no longer be financially viable. Companies would have to be nationalized to do this and then the nation would have to begin losing money, because businesses are not going to willingly lose money because you want them to operate their business in a foolish way, like manufacturing toys in the US, or not passing costs onto consumers.

There's definitely more potential for the actual manufacturers of action figures in Asia, rather than parasitic companies like Hasbro, Mattel, etc who just hold licenses, sculpt and promote but have no idea how to actually do the manufacturing. Although shady shit might prevent western investors from giving Chinese or Vietnamese manufacturers any look, and especially since they'd still be rather risky since the government can easily seize whatever it wants on a whim there.

No, because the explicit problem is that they now have to open and inspect all packages that go through customs, largely because of the elimination of De Minimus. Before, all of that shit passed through with no checks and very little paperwork.

The problem is doing all this with the sheer volume of smaller packages that pass through customs on a daily basis.

All of these things are obviously easily faked if you actually want to mail illicit substances, so it won’t stop shit, and in the meanwhile no one will be doing any of this as the administration is flying by the seat of their pants and trying to implement it too early so everyone’s just going to be stuck eating the $80 fee for months probably.
