You know, I can't find evidence of that. It could be that Mattel has toy rights in perpetuity to any new designs of characters named She-Ra, Catra, etc. created by artists hired by the owners of the She-Ra media rights. I don't think anyone has publicly posted the legal contract drawn up in the mid-80s that made those rights so confusing.

I believe on my copy of the minicomics collection that the fine print says DreamWorks owns She-Ra and etc.

Also I would trust that 10 years ago when Scott worked at Mattel, I could see Universal owning PoP. He said if that wasn't true why did he send them license fees? And that rings true.

But do they STILL own PoP or did Mattel buy it back? That's where it would get speculative.
Anonymous No.11529395
Can we clarify the current lore for Preternia?
The Three Towers were there. Lady Slither had the Snake Lair as a base.
In Origins He-Ro's minicomic, when he was young, the Great Black Wizard was around with a base called the Ebon Fortress, and Rattlor and Tung Lashor were seen working for him instead of King Hiss or Lady Slither.

The one thing I find too awkward is Horde symbols on bare shins. Like, I know the concept art did it that way, but I always assumed an actual figure would put shin guards on her like Leech has to print the symbol on.
Hopefully the actual figure will do that even if it's not in Axels art. Minor changes from art to toy happen a bit. Like Stingor's toy at SDCC had green eyes where his art aways had red

And I've said before, whatever he says was probably true when he worked there. But a lot can change in a decade.
If anything he should have used more lawyer speak like "based on how things were when I worked at Mattel, this could be a problem."

Besides last thread someone was saying that Mattel purposely is half assing She-Ra related stuff so they can buy it back from Universal cheaper than if there were successful toys in shelves. No one was calling bullshit on that rumor. Everyone was like oh yeah that makes a lot of sense.

>And I've said before, whatever he says was probably true when he worked there. But a lot can change in a decade.
From everything I've looked into, the basis for Scott's claim is that when he was running Classics they needed to send royalty checks to Universal, because Mattel sold the rights to MOTU to Hallmark in the 90s, which eventually Universal bought Universal. This is not what happened. What happened was Filmation got bought out by Hallmark, along with everything they owned, which included the original He-Man cartoon, so anything introduced in the cartoon that was created by Filmation was owned by Filmation (like Orko). Universal only owns the rights to the Filmation cartoon and the original characters therein, as well as the rights to produce new MOTU cartoons through their ownership of Dreamworks.
This is why I don't think Scott is outright lying, I think he had to deal with a bunch of legal paperwork years ago, which he now does not remember properly and doesn't realising he is just filling in the blanks with bullshit. Which gets further compounded because people ascribe him a certain level of clout and legitimacy, so they repeat his misrememberings as gospel.

Mattel bought Orko. That's why you see him in the 2002, CGI and Powerhouse cartoons and he talks about Trolla but they can't show any other Trollan from the Filmation cartoons.

He's referring to a debate Michael from Retroblasting got into with Scott hosted on the Geek Dad Life YouTube channel. It did not go well for Michael. Michael has zero chill and seems to have a massive chip on his shoulder, so he immediately got flustered and pissy.

Yeah, I was just using Orko as an example of a character created by Filmation.
My point is MOTU itself, is owned entirely by Mattel. I'm sure that if Mattel were doing stronger financially they'd buy all of the Filmation stuff back, but really if they own the notable characters like Orko, then maybe they don't really give a shit.

The Mattel Television executives have named you show runner for the next Masters of the Universe cartoon.
Your creative restrictions include them wanting a core team of He-Man, Teela, 2 other male heroes and a second girl.
You can either vary the villains or use a core team, but they want at least two villainesses.

Blue Beetle approach.

one of heroes, say Buzz-Off will be a girl now but we'll make clear that there used to be a male Buzz-Off among Heroic Warriors and we'll have flashbacks to him.

With villains you can just bring one of existing ones. Maybe Screech is now Enchantress?

That or I'd have female Stinkor crushing on Adam like Fifi la Fume, lol.

So, after they FAIL to fund the Snake Lair today and people lose their "early bird incentive" of that snake girl piece, will that spell doom for the rest of the campaign?

Fuck Mattel and their greed for trying to hostage shit through early funding. You already set the time limit to fund, why do you have to pull this shit on top of it? Bad enough Hasbro attempted this shit with Louis Tully in their Ghostbusters HasLab last year, but this trend of dangling perks you can lose mid-campaign just needs to go away.

Watch, this will assist in leading to the projects failure (along with price).

I'd obviously keep He-man and Teela, but I would swap out MAA for Roboto, toss in Mek, MEF, and come up with a new heroic warrior woman to round out the bunch. What she could be is anyone's call. Stratos, MAA, Buzz off, and Moss Man would be written as wise elders in the vein of prequel jedi council members. Other heroic warriors like Fisto or Rio would be more akin to wandering vigilantes.
>Evil Warriors
Skeletor and Lynn are both givens. Beastman, Triklops, and Trapjaw get further cemented as Skelly's imediate crew members. Trapjaw is depicted as more of a heavy infantry type instead of a brainy guy while Triklops is the brains of the entire operation. For the sake of not Rule 63'ing somebody's favorite the second evil girl is based off Skelly's evil pet dragon from the Dragon Blaster armor and named "Dragonessa".

Basically all of the Nu-Ra designs (at least for the villains) are improvements over the originals, they're just severely hampered by Stevenson's autistic need to trannify everything, that's why a lot of the fanart draws all the characters as way cuter, because they aren't getting all their chests flattened. Even if you wanted to have Scorpia be a bigger girl to fulfil some kinda tank bruiser role, there's no reason she can't still be attractive. Like Gina Carano (I think that casting would give the Nu-Ra tranny fanset a stroke) is buff and feminine.

So I don't think this is the most ideal suggestions because I'm pretty opposed to Club Grayskulll in the first place, but after He-Ro, Sharella and Eldor, sketchbook series ocs would probably be a decent option for when they need to get people to renew the membership/hook new fans.

The Snake Lair's at 5,537/6000 now. So first off, anyone who's been on the fence, now's the time to go for it, while the Slither skeleton is still attached. Second, if backers don't die off over the next two weeks, or if there's another huge push in the last day or two, Pythonus has a good chance of happening.

>TQ: Have you backed Snake Lair?
Just backed the Snake Lair as a Canuk. I was disappointed and confused by how far off the exchange rate was ($100) but had seen other international anons say when they contacted Mattel and they claimed it was to cover any duties and taxes in their "streamlined checkout experience" so I made my peace with it. However when I went through checkout it added another $66.30 for taxes? So I was charged for taxes and duties twice? Is this an error? If any other Canadian/International fans could confirm they paid the same additional charge I'd appreciate it. I knew I'd regret it if I passed on the Snake Lair, but I don't want to be overcharged beyond the original expensive price if it's in error.

For a moment I thought it was over, then I realised it's just Lady Slither that's gone.

Imagine though if in the next 2 weeks they wont get those last 3%, that would be embarassing.

So Snorse is now part of the regular tier with the Lair? I got confused what were original tiers and what's the new ones.

Also, in minicomic, Thundercats and He-man already defeated Skeletor....I guess that proves that TC Wave 3 was thrown together at last minute as quick cash-grab.

Yes, Snorse was bumped from 10K up to being included when the set hits 6k backers. 8k will unlock the Priest because MC refused to listen to the complaints to bump him into 6k as well at that high cost.

Now if this doesn't hit 8k - because 6k will happen - then it's likely some people will cancel their order on the final day if 8k is unreachable. People only backed now not to miss the Early Bird figure despite being told it's dumb to lock a figure behind EB yet is obviously worked into the cost.

Like, you're going to tell me I'm obligated to pay 10 extra bucks just for the privilege of being allowed to order these figures...and you're offering toys you put zero effort into, just cobbled together existing pieces?
That doesn't sit right with me. So Plasmar and Strobo should be "free" offerings (either retail, fan channels or normal MC public offerings)
Of course, I doubt many people will see it my way and they'd throw their bucks at Daddy Mattel even if they said CG would be all Anti-Eternia repaints

Weird take but that's why I don't trust him, Aaron Archer, Jason Langston, and many others talk about their past experience in a very past tense way and when ask about modern situations for companies or teams they are no longer with, they make it clear they have no idea what's going on with them now but Scott just acts like everything is exactly as it was.

Rev made Andra a core character and the new movie cast Goat Man and Pig Boy, so my thinking is that Mattel and the Hollywood people don't care who you use as long as Skeletor, He-Man and Teela are the stars and there are enough girls (and the humans aren't all white, but we can minimize boring humans among the main cast).

Sharella was just new head, top, belt and bow (arrow sharred with Bow) so she's Rulers of Sun level of effort.

MC has stuff like Space Sumo and He-Skeletor

No release was ever judged by amount of tooling. Just amount of stuff it came with. Rokkon wasn't more expensive than Geldor. Thundercats repaint wave wont be cheaper than all new tooling.

So I get your logic but it was never how Origins worked so Im just facing reality. Skeleton Lady Slither requires a lot of new tooling but that doesn't mean I want her more than Strobo.

>was owned by Filmation (like Orko). Universal only owns the rights to the Filmation cartoon and the original characters therein, as well as the rights to produce new MOTU cartoons through their ownership of Dreamworks.

I'm just gonna throw in my two cents, based just on what Mattel is actually observable doing:
Mattel Studios made Rev with Powerhouse, DreamWorks wasn't involved. So if DreamWorks owned any rights in current era, why wouldn't THEY be making the cartoon or at least involved in it?
Rev also had free reign to include stuff that came from Filmation as evidenced by the inclusions of the Shaping Staff, Aquaticans, Illeena who was only cut for time, the Hover Robots. Just because they DIDNT use other Trollans doesn't mean they COULDNT necessarily when all you have to do is look at the show to see they did include Filmation elements
And the only thing the producers ever said that they could not include in the show was She-Ra related elements (Despara being clarified by them as a separate legal entity from She-Ra and PoP)
I'm sure some people will twist themselves in knots to explain how these observable realities fit their headcanon about what the truth of the legal matters are, but all you need to do is turn the cartoon on to see that Mattel doesn't need DreamWorks to make shows and can include in Filmation MotU stuff in said shows, they just can't put PoP in their MotU shows

But if you told me "actually you're only allowed to buy He-Skeletor in the first place if you give me 10 bucks first", ESPECIALLY when as you said I can still buy something like Rokkon WITHOUT spending thst 10 extra bucks, like, why would I give a subscription fee for that? You make an interesting point. I would have thought from the way 3 cartoons in a row have had Orko verbally dance around being able to see Trolla or interact with other Trollans that the writers want to use them but can't. But that goes against the Hover Robots, having the right to use Ileena but just cutting her for time... they even had Granamyr in red instead of green so they could claim "Mini-comics are Mattel IP!"

>Rev also had free reign to include stuff that came from Filmation
Mattel not owning the rights to the Filmation stuff doesn't necessarily mean they CAN'T use it. Sometimes something as simple as putting "special thanks to [relevant parties]" or "with acknowledgement to the works of [relevant parties]" and maybe a few bucks in royalties or back end points is enough to be able to include elements. Especially if all the parties are on good terms. Revelation was supposed to be a direct continuation of the Filmation series, so the inclusion of Orko was probably necessary enough to warrant making sure the legalities were hashed out. She-Ra may have been a different case because maybe Dreamworks had a non-compete clause in place for that side of things, like how Marvel weren't allowed to use any of the characters that showed up in the Netflix shows for five years after the shows ended, so it could be a similar situation where the Nu-Ra series ended but in order to see some final additional revenue from the series, She-Ra could not be included in any other animation until a certain period had been reached, because if Nu-Ra ended and Mattel immediately commissioned a new She-Ra series from a competing network, then people would be paying less (or no) attention to the Dreamworks series.

I hope they do figures of the Nu-Ra looks, at least for She-Ra and Catra, because they are good appearances, Catra especially is a good update. My ideal version would be Nu-Catra in the original outfit. I like Nu-Catra's hair, and the markings, face. I think actual catgirl is better fitting to the character than just "regular looking chick who can turn into a cat" especially given that the original outfit itself doesn't really scream "cat" kinda like Catwoman's original purple dress and green cape, in fact I wonder if they were referencing that outfit.

Just for fun:
Post your ideal Mattel Creations release schedule for next year, starting in January.

Ground rules:
>you must follow a similar template to this year. Which means you must have 4 normal Origins (can be vintage or non vintage since this year included Rio, Hurricane Hordak, Despara and presumably soon Stingor), 2 Masterverse (since we had Panthor and soon Moss Man), 2 Cartoon Collection (Vultak and Swiftwind), 3 Club Grayskull (since we got the 3 Preternia figures once Eldor hits. The CG can follow a theme like this year or just be random choicesif you like), and 1 SDCC exclusive like Skele-Shredder which can be a wild card and you can slot it into any subline you like
>A creature or vehicle selection WILL take a slot from a figure, so if for example you ask for CC Battle Cat, you only have one slot for a CC figure

This more likely deters people from joining after that period has passed than it does to encourage people to fund late in the game to meet tier quotas.

I don't want to sound like I'm shitting on anyone's ideas, but these posts regarding CG, don't you think these suggestions would have people up in arms?
Sticking 3 vintages like Blade, Saurod and Gwildor behind an obligatory extra paywall would piss people off to no end, and I think PoP fans would react the same way for Scorpia and Entrapta (you'd prob get away with it with Octavia though).
I think CG really would need to stick to characters with more modest demand that you can get away with it without angering too many folks, which would exclude anything vintage or that has at least comparable fandom love to vintage.

Whales with too much money are the folks going in for Club Grayskull memberships in the first place.

And i'd also want to know what you'd define as "absolute nobodies". One off cartoon characters? Unproduced vintages? Comic characters? Axels OCs? (All of which id say "yes, those sound like good CG offerings". Not popular enough to piss off the masses, paypigs will buy them anyway and they're JUST tempting enough that you might convince some folks not inclined to want the membership to buy it anyway with minimal grumbling since they may not exist otherwise)

And if your going to take the stance that vintages and high demand PoP should be in CG to force everyone to buy it, let's take that to it's logical conclusion and just say "let's make Club Grayskull mandatory to buy ANYTHING from Mattel Creations", then you'll be sure to milk those sweet paypiggy dollars

By the time Hordak came out I had mostly moved on to G.I.Joe. So I never really knew what he was or where the fuck he came from.

What's the generally most accepted canon-ish origin for Hordak and his Horde. I seem to remember something about him being Skeletor's master, until Skeletor betrayed Hordak by banishing him to some phantom zone dimension. Until he escaped.

Hordak lived on prehistoric Eternia:
80s mini-comics, 2002-3 cartoon
Hordak is primarily a sorcerer: ditto, 10s DC comic

Hordak is a space alien: She-Ra cartoons, 10s DC comic, Revelation/Revolution cartoon
Hordak thinks technology is superior to magic: same cartoons
Hordak is a cyborg: 80s cartoon, becomes one in 80s mini-comics, was in DC comic before magic regeneration, present day in Revolution

In every version, he was Skeletor's teacher when King Randor was a youth.
In the 2002-3 cartoon and DC comic, he astral projects from a dimension called Despondos. 80s mini-comics say "banished to Etheria" and he blames Skeletor. A Revelation comic says Skeletor betrayed him to Despondos after helping him invade Eternia. Sometimes Etheria is explicitly a planet in the dimension of Despondos.

The Horde is at least thousands of years old (DC: Hordak himself is one million and not the first ruler). His main henchmen Mantenna, Grizzlor and Leech fought He-Man's ancestor thousands of years ago in 2002-3, but more commonly they're aliens with annoyingly underdefined origins.

I find it funny that parts reuse means MotU literally has evil feet. Skeletor, Mer-Man, Webstor, Kobra Khan, Stinkor, Scare Glow, Ninjor and Zodac had them, with only Zodac being depicted as neutral rather than pure evil. There's no biological connection between them, ranging from a merman to a Snake to a purported interdimensional demon and someone what appears to be an Asian man. Just the ontological one of being Evil.

I think I like best the clawed regular-toed bare feet, which go back to 200X. The cartoon showed Keldor first, then he's a dead guy with a bare skull above his muscles. You can believe that clawed regular toes were inside the boots he used to wear, and that feeling no pain as a dead guy he finds footwear pointless.

Same.
I was collecting MCX MotU from late 2019 and only started picking up Origins when Mosquitor came out. My thinking was "OK, I'll buy the deluxe Origins and any others where they preserve a vintage action feature that wouldn't fit on a 2-inch figure. But looking at that Classics line I missed, Masters of the Universe has a couple hundred characters Mattel might make and only dozens might have action features that require the vintage body size. This new format is better for vehicles and an expansive universe."
Four years after that line of thought, MCX is dead with only about 32 characters, they've dragged me into buying the Origins versions of some 90-100 unique MotU characters plus crossovers like Rulers of the Sun and Turtles of Grayskull, and a bunch of vintage remakes lost their gimmicks. Sigh.

I'm looking at 200X Tung Lashor on Frank's He-Man page, and this seems like a handy reference for Snake Man scale, because we have 4 of them standing in a line. Kobra Khan is more than a head shorter than King Hiss. In 200X, they're 4 years younger than Filmation and Teela's teenage girl contempt for Adam is palpable all the time.
Psychologically, they're practically siblings (and Teela says so in the Filmation ep "Into the Abyss").

At this point, how do you hope Mattel will add Marlena to Origins?
A 200X armored version would have been cool, but if she's going to be 6", she won't fit with the 5.5" Randor they already made.
Filmation, relegated to Mattel Creations?

I've always wanted a "vintage" Marlena that follows the design philosophy vintage Randor did.
They didn't just take Filmation bathrobe-and-slippers Randor and make a toy, they made a toy that looked like a vintage warrior figure with some parts reuse and made that.
They make that, and I'll get it. Anything else I'll honestly pass on

I don't think that matters too much, since Randor only reused the basic male, reusing the basic female would be fine.
But as far as Origins goes, they could reuse some wave 3 She-Ra pieces too.
Teela buck, Sorceress arms, She-Ra boots, a new head and a soft goods cape plus a soft goods battle skirt, one of those ones that goes down to the ankles but has splits at the side for exposed legs and more mobility, you know the ones I mean, that's give the general feeling of that traditional Marlena look while still feeling like a vintage figure ready for battle

Fem-Roboto with breasts on a transparent chest with gears and a heart inside would be a fun design, but everything depends on personality.
If she was a walking arsenal like 200X and had an attitude about weapons like Revy from Black Lagoon, grown men would waifu her but that doesn't sound like a character who'd appeal to young girls or boys.
Maybe focus on swappable tools for hands rather than firepower. She could capture the same appeal as Nu-Entrapta.
Or Kisten Wig could ruin it. Time will tell.

It's not a joke.
After they beat Skeletor and realize they shouldn't have let Keldor be king, He-Man's solution is "representative democracy" and Andra gets nominated for the election.
And why was Keldor made king? Because Randor told Adam he couldn't be both He-Man and king because...reasons...so when Keldor rocked up Adam immediately turned over all responsibility to him.
So He-Man establishrs democracy so he can continue to fuck off and not have to be king and just live at Grayskull full time
Anonymous No.11534466
>>11534448
That is so fucking stupid. Have they not heard of a fucking Regent? Why the hell can't Adam rule 99% of the time (probably 99.9% with Skeletor defeated) and protect Eternia the rest of the time? Why the fuck does modern media have such a massive hate-boner for monarchs? King does not automatically mean bad guy, it also doesn't immediately negate all other forms of government. By all accounts the people of Eternia like King Randor, and they'd probably like Adam as well, especially if they know that he has saved Eternia hundreds of times as He-Man, fabled protector of Castle Grayskull. Fuck setting all that aside, I know they couldn't really use She-Ra stuff, but in the canon of the series Princess Adora would automatically be next in line, so if Adam wasn't allowed the crown because of his duties as He-Man then Queen Adora could take over. This shit makes me so fucking mad.

But the second thing....good God was she a dumbass in Revolution with astoundingly bad judgment. She absolutely should not be doing anything that requires leadership. Of course, even fucking Adam showed judgement so bad that he basically proved he shouldn't be thr fucking King, so I don't think Eternia has a good leadership candidate in the aftermath of the show.
