My Walmart finally got the Cars Race and Rescue set. I got Cruz because I somehow didn't have a Cruz yet, but sadly she's not very rescue-ish. Hopefully next time I'll be able to get Mcqueen with a siren and Guido with a fire helmet.

It feels like a lot more people are getting into diecast collecting recently. It's probably because it's relatively inexpensive to start. Walk into almost any store anywhere and you're bound to find Hot Wheels and Matchbox for less than $2 a car. A lot of collectors stick there and are perfectly content, but plenty others eventually start creeping into specialty collector brands like Mini GT.

I don't think they rereleased any Indiana Jones stuff this year, its more likely the store put out old stock that had been sitting in the backroom for a while. This Tuk Tuk is a 2024 but only appeared at my store recently. Not too bad getting releases late, though, it helps them dodge the scalper hype when they were first announced.

I got the feeling when they revealed them that they'd sell poorly, especially given how many of them are modern Disney IPs and people have grown a little sick of most of them.

>>11538814
Also doesn't help that they're like 5+ dollar dollaridoos and that puts them in premium price range. If it's being aimed at kids, the markup hurts sales too. Why pay more for the sillier licensed Go-Karts when other stuff kids like are cheaper?

I wonder if the 100% cast was based on the design plans being used to build the real car since the previous casts didn't have any visible lights. NTA, but I'm not a big fan of Mod Mill. Mashing Mod Rod with Twin Mill doesn't work well. It's got an ill fitting sniffer, mismatched engines, and dorky proportions.

I also question using Mod Rod when, out of all the more recent fantasy hot rods, it's the most generic looking in appearance. Bone Shaker has the skulls and more fame; Fusionbusta fits modernity with cyberpunk aesthetics; Mod Mill at best is a 6 cylinder Slavic deuce coupe that doesn't carry much else with it.

It's like Muscle Tone where it's incredibly tame to the point of being boring. And yet, I like the soap bar Chevy more than the discount deuce.

Is it a paint bubble? I guess what I would try to flatten it is lay a damp paper towel over that side of the car and then roll the side of a pencil or a marble back and forth over the bump. Just do it slowly and carefully, start with low pressure first, check the bump after passes and gradually increase pressure if theres no flattening.

If the bubble gets agitated too much it could crack off and leave a bare spot. If that happened I'd probably have to get some touch-up paints, mix to color match, fill the spot and hope it looks better than before.

The car honestly looks really nice as it is. Its real unfortunate but no matter what brand, all diecasts tend to have some paint/decal deformations. Heck, my favorite HW car has misaligned tailights. In some cases, the best way to fix imperfections is to believe it was actually good enough.

I had left out the Mod Mill, hardnoze, tooned, and braille variants since they were off-shoots of the main castings. The Mod Mill is... weird in the fact it has mismatched engines. The Mod-Rodded Twin Mill body itself looks cool, but I think it would have been more tasteful to have twin Mod Rod engines. Speaking of the Mod Rod, it looks like its coming back with a weathered look next year in this Vintage Club Silver Series.

On the other hand, the AE86 Corolla cast is way out of proportion and it was always named incorrectly. It's neither a Japanese nor US-spec Corolla, it's a Japanese Sprinter Trueno. The Japanese Corolla Levin had a different front-end with fixed headlights. The US Corolla used the Trueno front-end, but with larger bumpers to meet pedestrian safety requirements. The cast has the original bumpers and it's right-hand drive. It's a silly thing to fret about but this Neon Speeder car even has the Trueno badge detailed in the front bumper.

I saw the red Max Steel a long while back and thought the paint job and white walls were perfect, but was put off by the flat-6 engine. It's an engine type I associate with Porsches and the Tucker Torpedo, so it seemed historically inaccurate for a 20s-30s race car.

I believe they go with that color scheme on Road Bandit because IRL Jeepney tend to be painted in garish and decorative liveries. Plus correct me if I'm wrong but hasn't it mostly been locked as an Art Car?

Speaking of Art Cars I have a bit of a rant. I think Art Cars have been over done. The concept is good, and the earlier renditions are fun and creative. But I feel newer ones are less inspired, relying more on obnoxious colors to keep it going. I know it's a Cali thing, but it just feels stale these days.

Likewise liveries in general for mainline have been waning. You still get bangers no doubt, but nowadays you can tell when a particular car got most of the budget for its livery and when it doesn't. I don't know the team that does graphics now, but compared to the previous folk within the last 30 years it feels subpar and lazy half the time.

Jesus Christ. They started off not too bad looking but then degenerated into the mess in the bottom half of pic.

The Road Bandit has only been done once as an Art Car (complete with awful colored tires) but its a pretty recent 2020 release and has only had like 6 variants total to date. They kind of screwed the design flexibility by having the engine and rear fenders be the same piece, so half the car ends up chrome or with a weird colored engine. That being said, I want to see these with more ornate designs. Low-Rider type pinstripe patterns or something like the Day of the Dead celebration cars. Dare I say, even an itasha design like this year's Kia EV6.

And, yes, totally agree about art cars. I see too many good castings and paint wasted on ugly geometric patterns and those horrendous colored wheels.

I feel the problem with doing pinstripes and making it look like a proper lowrider, is that if you haven't noticed, Mattel seems to be cutting the budget on mainline more and more. Tampos get cheaper looking, they rely on being eye sores to get attention. To do a lowrider scheme, they'd most likely spend more than they'd like.

And if you ask, "Well why not put it into the Silver Series or Premiums?" Remember dear anon, le boomers will bitch if their Gulf boomermobiles aren't taking all the limelight. And if it isn't the remaining fatass boomers it'll be their kids screeching that it isn't an R34 Skyline for the seven-millionth time.

I miss when they had gorgeous metalflake paint with simple yet well done liveries, recreations of IRL racing schemes, and things that look both loud and believable. They grow fewer and fewer by the year and it's depressing.

always liked the challengers casting as many other muscle cars, one thing that aleays bothered me is the slammed/lowrider look on casting that aren't ones, the challengers look just weird: as they are it makes me think their suspensions are completely gone. Personally find more aestherically pleasing the slightly lowered ones that would give a more sleek appearance on a "road" car or else give that ready-for-track vibe to a "sportier" model.

I've noticed an overabundance of Gulf liveries not just in HW but in almost every other diecast too. As for the Skyline, it seems mostly spurned by FnF stuff (also an overabundance of) and the unfortunate thing is that's the only form some models reach the shelf in.

Another thing I've noticed, Nissan and Dodge both seem to get around in diecast brands everywhere. Sometimes Nissan is the only jdm in a brand. Despite both companies being in deep financial trouble, you can find toys of their cars made by anyone.

but how come in 1968+fucking57 they haven't introduced a better and more detailed casting yet?
And i mean this as retaining all the main distinctive features of the OG "Custom" (8 exhausts, custom hood, slightly chopped rood and SS grill) while giving it new details: like doors, trunk and trim lines; better and sharper detailing one existing features. Therefore to give it a more modern and detailed look without going for 1:1 accuracy, it's still an hot wheels after all

kind of, but given its iconic status it deserves a better treatment.
Therefore i don't want those two castings to replace it but at least put it on par of current production standards. Both Copo and '67 already look better with just few details over the custom camaro and they're simple mainlines, meanwhile the OG camaro seems some cheap knockoff for nowaday standards.
What's baffling is that the 20th anniversary RLC casting was already retooled to add doors and trunk lines, they gave it a better engine and added the vents under the windshield too. This improved the whole look BUT they stopped right there for some reasons. They were already retooling it, just finish the job... instead they dropped the ball halfway there

Either they wanted to keep in line with the concept/show car nature or it's once again Mattel forcing a talented designer (Mark Jones in this case) to make something with very little time or interest. And I know this, because Mark Jones rarely if ever makes shit fantasy/fictional designs. This feels like something he wasn't allowed to do much with.

Before you say something to debunk this theory, guys like Larry Wood have said in interviews that there were times, years or specific models Mattel would shove their corporate meddling down the designers's throats because the company wanted to push something. I keep all my cards 'resealable' so when I have one I want to open I use this method. I use a sharp boxcutter to cut the outermost (not all the way through) edges in between the plastic and cardboard of only the sides and bottom of the plastic case. The top will not be cut and will stay attached.

After the edges have been cut all the way around, find an area close to one of the corners to 'pierce' the tip of the razor blade through the printing on the inside of the case. Only a small opening needs to be made, enough for a pick (toothpick can work) to slide into.

Then push/roll the pick towards the corner with the tip facing that direction. This pries the plastic off while preventing it from pulling up excess printing on the inside. Do this on the rest of the sides until the case can swing up to let the car out.

The opened case can be glued back shut with an invisibe gluestick. It doesn't leave the case looking 100% unopened, especially if theres colored printing near the case borders. The 'pierce' part is the hardest part to do with minimal damage, so it takes practice to master this technique.
Anonymous No.11554360 >>11554561
>>11554340
Also a tip when cutting the edges: Instead of moving the cutter itself, hold it steady with your hand rested on a table and move the card against the blade to cut. The razor blade is so sharp that it may want slice right through the plastic if it turns even at the slightest angle and you'll want to mitigate this.

NTA but I'd like to add to this. Who gives a royal fuck if the toy designed to be cheap doesn't meet up to the same exact quality as more limited run models?

I get wanting more bang for buck however I also think you're coming in for the wrong expectations regarding Mattel's shit. Would it be better if they raised the budget, increased the price a little but also boost quality up? Yes. But is Mattel, a multi-million dollar corporation with a history of making the most retarded of decisions, going to do that? No.

If you want 100% accurate scale and detail at 5-10 bucks, in this economy, maybe you should look elsewhere than a big box store.

It's also retarded bait because HW on average are never supposed to be bone stock takes, everything is hyperbolic for cheapness and rule of cool. That's what separated them from stuff like Matchbox (which BTW deserve more flak whenever they drop the ball for obvious reasons).
