BLDR General
Is BLDR (builder) the Lego killer Jazwares hopes for? Or another Mattel's Mega Construx/Bloks and Kre-o? Surprisingly they will make Monster Jam sets next year. But lego will too, though legos are technic sets not system.

Licensors know that Lego is the top dog and all other companies are just trying to play catch up. MEGA was a mid tier competitor but is re-branding or whatever now. I doubt many licensors are chomping at the bit to be working with BLDR, Brickcraft, Nano blocks or whatever other Lego knock off there is.

It's worth asking then what franchises would willingly ally themselves with lego competitors. Mega had some good choices but without any tie in media aliens, predator, borderlands, etc were all doomed. Still at this point I think it's worth revisiting. I'd kill for a Robocop construction line for instance. I cant imagine Lego will set their sights on Warhammer either. There's still a slew of other options nobody's considering.

Dont work. Anime IPs only work in action figure size like SHfigurats.

Helldivers, Starship Troopers and Warhammer are a good idea. But is Starship Trooper still a thing? And Warhammer might be a problem since fans already have the tabletop minis or McFarlaine action figures.

GTA VI, Resident Evil and Gears of War have new games or movies coming in 2026. It is very likely that Mattel will acquire at least one of these licenses for Mattel Brick Shop. GTA VI would make MBS a serious competitor to Lego.

Gi Joe, Motu, Fallout and Halo also have new movies or games coming next year, so expect more sets from these properties.

such a shame they're forbidden to include any minifigs with these accessory packs. fuck lego and their juryrigging.
>>11552199
Has anybody actually attempted anime minifigs outside of bootleggers though? After Pokemon proved to be such a success for Mega I fully expected them to embrace the weeb hype and go after IP's like Dragonball or One Punch Man. Ahit that bootleggers have proven there's demand for, for years now. Then the line slowed to a crawl and Lego announced they'ed nabbed it. A story as old as time :( .

Like Robocop, Troopers still has a diehard fanbase. They could focus on that but it'd surely be risky. There've been talks of a reboot now for years but nothing ever manifests. Hence why I brought up Robocop, Helldivers, and Warhammer. Even with the competition Warhammer's offering it's worth noting they have that big amazon movie in the works. I feel like it's a safe bet with tons of promise and overlap with Halo as is. Not to mention the succesa of the Space Marine games. Robocop and Helldivers both have that strength too. In an ideal world these three would have filled the void left behind by MEGA Halo, COD, and Destiny...

In anycase I'm still sad Lego Scooby doo died like it did.

Kreo arguably had worse luck than Mega. Far as I know their only real success was Transformers, every attempt they made to branch out (Star Trek, DnD, Gi Joe, etc) ended up dying off quick.
>>11553410
Right the Airbender sets. I suppose Exo Force scratched the same itch too. Most fans of Avatar lay the blame of the theme's failure to the bland nature of the sets. They might be right, but every subsequent Avatar revival seems to be less successful than the last. I doubt it would be any different nowadays unless somebody like Snap & Switch grabbed the license just to sell uber cheap sets.

MEGA would have done better with anime IP based off their figure designs. I can see more kids and collectors getting excited for super poseable miniatures of Goku or OPM.

Ditto on Robocop and Troopers in anycase. Mega Halo lasted nearly 20 years for a reason! Collectors like armored up sci-fi military men. Simple as two plus two.
>>11553611
Rambo was another suggestion I regularly brought up in the old MCX generals. Mad Max would be awesome too but afaik Warner is very apprehensive over licensing Mad Max for whatever reason. Platoon, V, and Young Guns might be too niche for today's market. Knight Rider, Airwolf, and Six Million Dollar man are slated to get big budget movie revivals in the next few years so perhaps they would be additional good options? While we're proposing alternatives, I still think Invincible, Mortal Kombat, and The Boys offer some golden opportunity aswell.

>MEGA would have done better with anime IP based off their figure designs.

This is a poor business strategy for Mega. It might give them short-term success, but in the long-term it would lead to their destruction because Mega would be competing for the same demographic as Lego. Lego's target audience is the emasculated. Anime appeals to the emasculated. The problem with trying to steal Lego's core demographic away from them is that Mega can't afford to outbid Lego for properties that appeal to their audience.

The only real chance Mega/Brickshop has is to invest in properties that Lego will not, such as mature, violent themes, like GTA, Resident Evil, Gears of War, Halo, and Call of Duty.

To become a major competitor to Lego, Mega/Brickshop needs the most popular mature/violent ip available, and that is GTA VI. GTA VI would be perfect for a brick construction toy because it provides endless content. It's basically a mature version of Lego City, only now you also can make military vehicles. So it's Lego City x Call of Duty!
Anonymous No.11553800 >>11553819
>>11553722
Do we even know if Matttel/MEGA is interested in mature IPs anymore? Robocop, Rambo, Mad Max, Starship Troopers, etc seem like they'd have been good fits with their older figures but it sounds like they're changing the name and rebranding everything right? They may be abandoning the more mature IP for more kid friendly ones.

I also think licensing may be more complex/complicated for some of those older IPs since contracts were done before it was the norm to include clauses in them to make licensing or merch sales easier.

That's what I was thinking. Especially in response to >>11553779 hence why I was leaning to oldfag anime options like DBZ. I completely agree with the notion of Mega/Mattel needing to lean into mature themes too. But just the same there's a niggling voice in the back of my mind saying the same stuff >>11553800 brings up. There's definitely a huge market niche for mature themed brick building sets + action figure styled minifigs, but clearly Mega might not be the ones around to deliver on that. Mega fucked Pokemon up because despite initial success they leaned way too hard on the most popular Pokemon and half the line was retreads of the same builds and Pokemon fans had. I bought Bulbasaur when the line launched, and was given one years later as a gift and they're both the exact same build. That isn't going to bring in audiences. I think Lego will crash and burn if they aren't mini-figure based for this reason. All the popular Pokemon were done to death by Mega.

I agree with this take. MEGA did a ton of Kanto pokemon as full builds or larger ones with motion and nearly everything had to hit clearance for it to sell. Lego needs to go a more traditional route and differentiate the offerings from what MEGA was doing. Maybe a full build for the Kanto starters, but no more than that. They need to dive into gyms, poke centers, poke marts, Oak's lab, Team Rocket HQ, etc.

The Beatles and Pokemon were bad ideas. Both are more appealing to Lego fans than Mega fans. Trying to steal core fans from a behemoth like Lego was a suicide mission, and it predictably led to the death of Mega. Hopefully Mattel has learned from those mistakes.

As action figures go theyre okay but compared to Lego they blow the marvel stuff out of the water. The arms alone have more articulation than most lego mechs.

Frankly however I'm surprised nobody has attempted to make the *new* bionicle/HF. It's been 10 years since G2, and nearly 8 since the star wars ultrabuilds died. There's a vacant niche just sitting there, and gunpla/blokees isnt scratching the itch.

A vacant niche is still a niche. I think more than the actual product the thing that drove bionicle was the massive marketing effort and media. They gambled on making a franchise and won. If you're going through the same effort of trying to kickstart more than a craze, you might as well try it with something new versus a niche market idea.
Companies have and still do make bionicle type stuff without the fiction behind it but the appetite for just the product is much less thank I think most bionicle fans think. But maybe we'll see more nostalgia based stuff in the future.
Outside lego type stuff I recommend the 30min mission fantasy line.
