Hasbro Standard G.I. Joe Classified MSRP Price Increase
>Hasbro Standard G.I. Joe Classified MSRP Price Increase
Hasbro
by Jay Cochran
September 3, 2025
I am hearing from various sources that starting with yesterday's Marvel Legends Emperor Doom figure, Hasbro has officially raised their MSRP on standard 6" figures to $27.99, at least here in the United States. Its unclear at the moment whether the price increase will be reflected in other countries right now. This price increase will also effect standard G.I. Joe Classified and Star Wars Black Series figures as well.

>What that means is that for any new regular Marvel Legends, G.I. Joe Classified or Star Wars Black Series figure release going forward will now see that higher $27.99 price point. The previous MSRP was $24.99.

>I would imagine Tariffs played a role in Hasbro's decision to increase their price which is something they seemed to have been contemplating doing for several months now. The reason for the price increase is only my speculation though.

>At this time I can't tell you how widespread the price increase will be, meaning if we will also be seeing price increases for things like Deluxe figures.

>Just to be clear, when we say the MSRP price is going up, that means the manufacturer themselves have raised the price across the board for all retailers as opposed to an individual retailer raising their price for whatever reason. In recent months due to tariffs we have seen individual retailers adjust their prices up and down, but those kind of price changes are generally only temporary. When the manufacturer raises their MSRP, while not impossible that the price could come back down, it is far less likely to happen.

>When we hear any more details about whether prices will also be going up with things like Deluxe figures we will be sure to update you here.

They can't keep raising the price and expect sales to not decline. Eventually there will be a crash, and that is likely to happen next year. When it does, expect Hasbro, Mattel and Lego to sell their products online only. That's why there is Hasbro Pulse, Mattel Creations and the Lego store. They've all anticipated this crash and are prepared to make the move to online.

Brian Flynn from Super7 said he had to surprise pay $500,000 on a shipment of toys that he didn't have the money for and that Super7's entire supply chain for toy manufacturing is based around making the toys in China, so even if the toys would be slightly cheaper to make in Vietnam technically, it would be impractical to move production, which is an issue other toy companies are facing. So, everyone is raising prices and laying off staff rather than move out of China.

Super7 laid off a bunch of their employees and even hired a CEO to try and get costs down and product on store shelves instead of made to order. Their D&D and G.I. Joe Ultimates lines are both probably dead in favor of focusing on Reaction and Reaction+
https://www.toyark.com/2025/05/21/super7-announces-layoffs-563194

https://www.actionfigureinsider.com/super7-appoints-toy-industry-veteran-geoff-walker-as-ceo-to-lead-next-phase-of-growth/

Although contrary to Flynn's claims about financial problems being solely the result of tarrifs is nonsense. He did one interview where he said online retailers bought heavy into Ultimates when the first wave of TMNT came out, because Wave 1 of TMNT kept selling out and needing extra production runs, and that after this places like BBTS started ordering less and less, with Flynn citing that G.I. Joe Classified killed G.I. Joe Ultimates because they're similarly scaled figures and most people will collect one or the other, so retailers were stuck with lots of unsold figures. He also said the same happened with D&D, since Hasbro just made the cartoon characters fairly recently. Then there was the fact that people didn't want to pre-order a figure and then wait a year for it to show up, and many times people would pre-order and cancel, so BBTS started charging people a deposit on some Ultimates figures, which Flynn said is why some Ultimates turned up at Walmart. It's fair to say that they were shifting gears and then got fucked by tarrifs however.

On the flip side to this, former Mattel brand manager, Scott Neitlich is saying on his YouTube channel that tarrifs were always an issue and that product was always getting more pricey to make in China, but that companies simply don't want to leave and are using tarrifs as an excuse to jack up prices to what they felt consumers should be paying in order to boost profits, since they're in a business and have a legal obligation to their stockholders to screw collectors.

You guys are arguing over the wrong shit.

Marvel Legends starting to show up at outlet stores isn't because of prices, but because Disney fucked up the Marvel franchise after getting rid of Quesada/Bendis/Perlmutter group that was in charge of what the movies would be like.
This why nearly every movie that was actually developed without their involvement (like Eternals) was poorly receieved, thus sales for Marvel toys started to decline.

Stores kept expecting sales to remain strong, and probably better because DEI is the future unlike the icky stuff comic book writers were creating for the movies, so they kept ordering millions of units for movie toylines. Since the Marvel movies lost a large chunk of their audience and few boys actually likes female centric superhero movies, the toys failed to sell in stores and they needed to get rid of the massive amount of overstock. Thus, Marvel Legends becoming pegwarmers in discount stores.

Before 2019? Marvel Legends were rarely found at discount stores, because the movies catered boys, because the comic book writers who were in charge of the movies knew what boys want, thus toys sales were great.

Then why is non-movie shit found in discount stores too? Mostly because movie shit clogs pegs for years now, thus there's no room for new waves of the non-movie toys, so sometimes these waves are sent straight to discount stores. Retailers make their orders 6-8 months ahead of time and there's no way for them to actually know how well a movie line will sell, so shit like this happens.

I think you need to provide a source for that. I remember him mentioning a surprise fee, but IIRC it sure wasn't half a million dollars.
>Super7 laid off a bunch of their employees and even hired a CEO to try and get costs down and product on store shelves instead of made to order.
Flynn stated the previous 6 months to that were their BEST EVER yet former employees chimed in that they had been fired during that golden period, once again proving Flynn a total liar. And as for "hiring a CEO", that's because Flynn was OUSTED as CEO by the investors due to his mismanagement. Sure, its his company, but when he took those millions of dollars in investments, they came with strings attached.
>Flynn citing that G.I. Joe Classified killed G.I. Joe Ultimates because they're similarly scaled figures
Flynn famously blamed the factory and told customers to essentially fuck off when they delivered unpainted heads for wave 2, killing the majority of their momentum in sales. They gained and maintained a reputation of putting out faulty goods and not standing behind them

Look at their FunFun Funko Pop ripoff line. They started at $25, then DROPPED to $20 because people weren't buying them. Not discounted, but literally dropped the MSRP going forward. Their 5-ich FunFuns are now the same price as their 3.75inch ReActions. Proof they were trying to price gouge. They had a whole $5 they could and did shave off the MSRP.

People didn't want to pay for these figures and just waited for clearance when they were $25.
What the fuck makes them think people are going to start paying nearly $30 for them?

Most of these toy companies, instead of raising the prices on this shit, should go through their toy catalogues and start cutting the glut out. 10, 8, or even 5 years ago they could get away with all the cheap, shitty trinkets they put out, but it just isn't feasible to keep that shit going any longer.

Go to Amazon, or BBTS, or any toy site, or just walk down the toy aisle, and see how much bloat there is for properties like Star Wars, or Marvel, or TMNT. Turn the filters off, and there are hundreds of pages of thousands of worthless vinyl figures, and bobble heads, and blind boxes, and plushie keychains, and other worthless trash. Cut all that low effort bullshit that was destined for the clearance rack and then the landfill out, and divert all the time, effort, money, and resources you're saving into actual figures people want.

We can also probably back off on random-ass Z-listers for a few years, and maybe scale back on the 100 different Spider-Men and Iron Men for a few years too.

Just fucking scale shit back. The era of normie casual faux nerds is over. Get that shit out of here, and focus back on making better quality figures and/or at least shit people are willing to buy.

There's a lot of collectors who'll shit the bed unless a figure comes with a bunch of extra heads and hands, and as much articulation as possible (even if it makes a figure look too visually chopped up). And the bottom line = more accessories and articulation = more parts = more molds needed and more stages of factory assembly. That means higher cost. That's the reason why Transformers are so expensive now. So scaling back is hard to do.

>focus back on making better quality figures
Look at how many blame themselves for not hair-drying/boiling their toys before trying to move an arm only for it to break. Higher prices don't afford better quality these days, and it's the customers who make excuses for it.

But I agree with lower prices and better quality being needed.

I broke my Mcfarlane Solid Snake silencer just trying to slide it onto the gun all those years ago when I first bought it. And what toys are made out of decomposes. It's getting harder to find a 1979 Luke X-wing without those weird lines on the helmet showing the plastic beginning to break down. It became normal to replace rotted O-rings on GI Joe as well as the rubber leg pieces on He-Man figures well over two decades ago. It's now even become common to replace rotted tires on Transformers and GoBots. I have a couple of vintage GI Joe figures also starting to form those weird lines on their faces (Baroness and Zartan) as their plastic is beginning to decompose. And I don't know if anyone else shares my experience, but the GI Joe vehicles seem to be getting more brittle with age, and 1980s MUSCLE figures which used to be somewhat flexible have become hard as a rock.

You're a dumb zoomer who doesn't know shit about old toys.
If you look at 90s magazines like Wizard and Toy Fair, you'll find people complaining about their McFarlane toys breaking even back then, while praising Toy Biz figures for actually holding up to kids playing with them.

And I'm not saying that toys aren't cheaper today, but man, there were mountains of issues back in the day too. Back in the 1980s GI Joes had problems with their crotches breaking, not just the rubberbands. The thumbs would also break off too. Transformers had shit breaking apart all the time too.
The biggest difference before was that 80s figures holding up better is mostly because toys were bigger and had fewer moving pieces. And stuck joints are inherent problem with paint app and the only way to avoid that is by cheaping out on paint, so of course 80s todays back in the day didn't have that problem.

Personally, i think toys had the best plastics in the 90s and 00s. Toy companies figured out that hard plstics are kinda shit, so they started using pliable stuff in the 90s and 00s, so stuff breaking became less of an issue. I think they went overboard starting in the 10s though.

The best Joes have either already been done, or people are still waiting for them. No line can go on forever before it's depleted, and toymakers have been riding the 80s retro-wave toy brands for around two decades now. For Joes, Darklon and Frag Viper both fall into the age when Gen-X stopped buying Joes and Millenials took over. It's probably not the best idea to do figures from that era overall as like with the Power Rangers flop, Millenials don't seem to be sentimental-buyers like Gen-X are. There are exceptions like the Alley Viper, though.

Honestly Hasbro needs to double down on delivering more like Cold Slither, Rattler Pilot Baroness, "Predator Billy" Quick-Kick, and other toys that are new versions of the classics that pull from nostalgia-bait sources like the cartoon.

Ooof, everything you said is dumb.

Range Vipers came out a year later and they're super popular with fans. Same with Night Viper, Night Creeper, Metal Head, SAW Viper, and many other popular figures.
Those that got updated figures in the 00s GI Joe Vs and 25th lines were also HUGE at release, and most of them remained high priced in the secondary market for decades.

So there's three reasons why those figures aren't selling:
1. they're not popular. Maybe this is why Hasbro never bothered making an updated figure of them until now?
2. Classified is dying/market for it is tiny, so the few fans that are left don't want to support anything after 1988.
3. Economy is crashing

People are showing their political alleigances with their complaints about the prices. All prices did for the past four years is skyrocket. There's absolutely no way to deny it other than to engage in political bitching. The ONLY way toy prices will come down is if toy makers offer better assortments of figures per case instead of entire cases of just one figure at a time so the store pegs see more variety, and they find ways to cut corners like fewer accessories. Less articulation would help as well.

Guy claims that figures like Alley Vipers are the exception to the rule, but there were more than a few characters in 1989 and afterward that have/had very popular remakes.

You can really see it in the values of the original stuff where there's a noticable decline in the values after 1986 with the MCC and Defiant being the two big exceptions. BUT to be fair to Hasbro, they have managed to pull off a few surprises, like taking what's one of the worst original figures and turn him into a high-demand one (Crystal Ball). Prices have been rising for over a decade now. Added articulation and more accessories = more parts to assemble + more molds to produce said parts. That raises the production cost. Even without inflation/Bidenomics/Trump, the prices rise anyway. It sure as hell doesn't help that toy-makers know that adults and not kids are buying, and adults are willing to pay more than the parents of kids are. I just got through paying $140 for a Rattler Baroness as a lot of others did. Knowing that, you know damn well that Hasbro will make sure that the repaint will cost a little extra over regular single-boxed figures.

Do you remember other countries like Japan buying used Levi's jeans from Americans because new ones just costed way too much there?

And we all know about shit like HLJ where Americans buy foreign goods. Well people in other countries do that with stuff like electric guitars where American-made ones are considered to be the world gold standard, but local retailers sell for way too much. Plus shit like Nike. You think Air Jordans can cost a lot here? Try buying them in East Asia or Europe.

3 is rather contentious because it crashes all the time for those on the low end and never does for those on the high end. Toy collectors are spread about, so some will never stop buying and never have to, and others will be strapped for cash and need to stop at times, which could lead to younger fans being more likely to not buy figures that would otherwise appeal to them.

All the more reason why as what he said may have some truth about gen x and millennials. I'm a millennial and I know we are not as well off as gen x, so our favorites will probably suffer in sales whereas the early 80s stuff will have more upper middle class and rich collectors who can support it. I'd like to get Darklon for example but I wouldn't pay 25 for it. And I don't buy in store--actually I've never seen Darklon at either Walmart or Target--so internet prices are pretty much my only option and they're just stuck at 24ish-25

You forgot about the collector who has pretty much everything and just burns out. That's what happened to HCC788 on YouTube. That also happened with a rich Star Wars collector who then decided to say "fuck it" and sell it all off once he had everything a few months ago.

What the hell are you talking about?
GI Joe was still a very popular toyline after 1986. It was one of the few toylines that got a yearly giant playset/vehicle every year because it was popular enough to sell big ticket items. In fact, the second biggest year for GI Joe was either 1992 or 1991.

Nevermind the fact that we're talking about how characters made in 1989 and afterward were still very popular with fans, hence getting remade 2 or more times and being hard to find when they got remade for the 00s and 10s toylines.
These figures don't get remade a million times if they're not popular with fans

And you rely too much on secondary market values to gauge popularity. Tons and tons of examples of people just buying shit just to speculate and going bust on their "investment." Or unpopular shit only going for a lot of money because no one bought it when it first came out and they need to complete their collection.
Pic is an example of a massive shelfwarmer that stayed on shelves for literal years, went on clearance, probably got destroyed when stores couldn't sell them, and then 5 years later was going for $100 more everything else in the toyline on the secondary market.

And you're ridiculous to think that Hasbro somehow made a conscious decision that made Crystal Ball popular. Fact that he's popular is solely beacuse's a joke character that never got remade until now. Hasbro could have released a POS and it would have sold because "hahah, he's so shitty they couldn't even make a new mold for him and that joke is funny enough for me to buy. also, because he never got remade until now"

Secondary market value does help measure popularity of a figure. That's why Rattler Baroness is worth around $140 while Origins Baroness is probably the most worthless figure in the series.

And some people do like the age c effect " (clear plastic add-ons) for CB that makes him better than the original with a lenticular disc. It'll go nicely with the Ghost Viper that's coming. Now if only Hasbro would produce the "ghosts" of a Roman soldier, a WW1 ace pilot, and Mongolian horse warrior.

I was working at Kay Bee toys part time during Clinton's second term, Christmas season 1997 through the early part of W's first term, February 2002 and prices rose for various toy lines then and it hasn't stopped since. So it doesn't matter which party is in power, they just keep rising for a variety of reasons, mostly material costs, inflation and innovations in the different lines, like added articulation, paint applications, sculpt development and the like.

The QC issues on PR were due to trying to switch to Vietnam, which if they would've succeeded in they would've been in a much better situation right now. If only you meddling kids didn't criticize all the QC issues they allowed through.

> if toy makers offer better assortments of figures per case instead of entire cases of just one figure at a time so the store pegs see more variety

This is incorrect and a lost cause. Entire waves usually have 1-2 pegwarmers, which would stop reordering. It's better if each figure is its own SKU so if a figure is pegwarming it doesn't stop reordering of other figures that are selling from the same line.

>cut corners like fewer accessories. Less articulation would help as well.
Why would you willingly ask for this? Might as well just ask for the line to be ruined like Black Series has been with single jointed crap.

>Secondary market value does help measure popularity of a figure
Sure, but only in the long term. Right now, Baroness barely came out, she's rare, and some collectors are paying really high amounts of money for her, thus it creates a bubble. It's difficult to actually gauge whether it's popular or just speculation. Nevermind the price will always be pricier than normal, because of how limited the figure is and how you could only purchase her through a high priced boxed set.

Again, that Toad figure was a character no one cared about, was ugly, and was a huge shelf warmer (Crystal Ball parallels here). However, on the secondary market 5 years later, you'd say he was the most popular Marvel Legend of all because he was going for upwards of $400. The few people who actually bought that worthless Toad figure cashed in on some inane collectors.

How popular a character is actually easy to gauge on eBay, because how many ML Spidermans are actually sold everyday on eBay versus that Toad? A shit ton more, not just because more Spidermans were made, because you can even look at a Spiderman figure released during the same time as Toad.
So if you only look at price, you're only measuring how much people are willing to pay for it, not its popularity.

So we can look at how Alley Vipers from 1989 (and all remakes) or Saw/Range Viper from 1990 (and all remakes) ROUTINELY selling on eBay for way too much money for nearly 30 years, because this actually shows how popular a character is and is in such demand, it commands higher than normal prices. And this is despite the GI Joe secondary market actually falling in recent years.
I mean, you have Classified Metal Head going for less than any of the half dozen 1:18 Metal Heads, which shows how far shit has fallen. A deluxe figure that i never saw at Ross going for less than a loose Metal Head is pretty crazy.

Just throwing out how to lower prices. The Rattler figures didn't come with extra hands, for example.

The most valuable original Star Wars figure is Vlix, a fat blue alien that only got a Brazil release. Collectors pay for rarity as much as they pay for aesthetically attractive toys. And the Rattler Baroness will come down some, but I don't think it'll fall below $100 for a MISB example. And that price depends on Hasbro reissuing it in a different color. If they don't, then she gets more expensive as soon as new Rattlers are done shipping.

If they did release it under Biden' term you'd just say he was added there by the evil Dems. For whatever reason you ignore how often rich people are into that filth and believe the guy who has given every possible reason to believe he would, wasn't. For me I want it released and everyone, Trump or not, who was diddling kids to be behind bars. That's the difference. You want to protect Dumpy at all costs, and I want everyone who deserves it held accountable.
