It's really hard to say that when it blends both open world blended seamlessly with real time battle mechanics, and survival building mechanics. There's also no evolution or anything like that. Most importantly, it was so successful in showing us how and what can be done with the genre, that pokemon is forced to improve. Something they hate. Look at the new game. It's being forced to implement open world AND battle mechanics in that open world, but doesn't know how to execute the implementation so it looks horrendously clumsy. The feeling with be clunky, graphics shit, assets reused, etc.

Nonetheless, pokemon is being forced to improve, even if they're not capable of it. They're being forced to fulfill the demand of the fans now that got a taste of what can be. Nintendo, gamefreak and pokemon are being forced to course correct and make a game that follows a trend set by an indie developer. If you can't see why Nintendo is terrified and why they're arbitrarily patenting game mechanics and suing on no grounds, then you're either not paying attention, or ar a Nintendog shill.

Considering they just announced both it's 1.0 full release AND a spin off Harvest Moon style game set in the same universe, I'd say that iron is still pretty damn red, despite Nintendo's best efforts.

The game has a lot of very action figure friendly designs and I would love to grab some for my shelves. Though they'll most likely just be little figurines or something and not actually articulated figures. At which point, I'd grab a Chillet and call it a day.

NTA but the reason Palworld got so much heat is because it's not just "a game like Pokemon" or even "a game inspired by Pokemon". There's plenty of games that are mechanically borderline-clones of existing franchises that are well beloved in their own right (I forget the name of it but there was an "Animal Crossing except spooky" game series that's still very popular in Japan). The issue is it's an actual honest-to-god knockoff. They literally used Pokemon's 3D assets and frankensteined them together to make their "totally original" monsters, with the barest minimum of retopology to try and hide what they'd done. And even if we ignore that, it's just not a good looking game. It's horrifically bootleggy-looking with the monsters clashing hard with the asset-store environments and weapons, and overall it just looks shockingly uninpsired and cheap. I think the best way I can compare it to other, well-liked "game like X" is like this. Most other tributes/original clones are "What if [X] but instead of [Y] it was [Z]?" with X being the original game, Y being the characters, artstyle and overall theme/vibe of the original and Z being the new theme/concept. So for a good Pokeclone, of which there are many, the mechanics would be quite similar but you'd be in cyberspace catching computer programmes, or in a city catching demons (which is literally SMT). Palworld has it backwards- the formula is "What if we made a generic survival/crafting game but made it about legally distinct Pokemon?".
Also I'm pretty sure it had Tencent funding, and that alone is justification for Nintendo to go nuclear. Fuck Tencent and fuck China.

Modern Pokemon is definitely an absolute shitshow; SV were inexcusably bad to the point they barely even work properly. GF absolutely need to pull their finger out. No actually, I was big into Digimon as a kid (should really dive back in). No real familiarity with Monster Rancher but I can't hate something I know nothing about. Hell, I really like pre-modern Pokemon and there's still hints of good stuff even buried in the modern slop, it's just for the most part the modern games are a complete and total mess.

Incineram is literally my GOAT. Always in my number 1 slot and always who I call out when I need something (except water types) absolutely demolished.

I just more or less finished picking out my main team, so I'd love figures of all of em. Incineram is top of my list with Lunaris easily a close second. Jourmantide would be awesome if they made a huge one with an actually segmented body his entire length and I had one epic battle to get Necromus way earlier then I really should've and his design would make a fantastic figure.

The least wanted of my main team would be Shadowbeak, he's got great stats, is a great mount and has some cool attacks, but he's got a pretty bowing design overall. All the others on my team I picked cause I like their looks, Shadowbeak is the only one there because he's just so damn good.

I freaking *LOVED* Monster Rancher, I actually kept a little booklet of what CDs spawned which monsters, the what the results of mating each Mon with each other would be, and a record of all the monsters I raised up and how long they lasted and all their other stats. Monster Rancher 2 was literally the first game I ever pre-ordered. I also think it had the best series of the big three Mon shows out at the time, though it sadly had the least lasting appeal.

The death of my nephew's first Suezo will forever be a core childhood memory for us. We didn't even know monsters could die in the arena and it just happened so suddenly. Nearly 30 years later we'll still toast to that one eyed monster's memory.

Palworld sold more than sv, has much better reviews, is still played more, actually fixed bugs and performance issues, and gave more content than was in sv's dlc for fucking free. It also has actual building interiors, more interactions with the creatures, riding on every monster except the smallest ones and more things to do like building stuff. Lambtron, a Chinpokomon from an early episode from South Park. It was a fun episode to watch when I was getting into Pokémon as a teen. The original lineup of the fictional creatures were (mostly) based on actual Pokémon (obviously Shoe wasn’t), but in the later South Park RPG games the Chinpokomon roster gets several more with many others based on other Pokémon. Like Biebersaurus which was essentially a Beyleaf with a (young) Justin Bieber hairdo.

I think the reason Palworld's toy license didn't get picked up sooner is because the big ones were all afraid of getting in hot water with Nintendo, whereas Loyal Subjects has probably never been able to get the Nintendo license anyway and Palworld is a great opportunity for them. It's the first viable competitor to Pokemon we've seen in like 30 years.
