anyways I started with the SNAA Tristan, curious RG-like inner frame but man, the plastic of this thing is much harder than I expected

Asking once again:

I have a kit that after over a year of proudly displaying on my shelf, I realized I could've done much better. I want to revisit it (redo some panel lining and fill gaps, mostly, maybe airbrush a couple details), but I already applied flat topcoat.
Should I strip the top coat? What's the best way to do it? Or should I just try filling gaps and panel lining with the topcoat on and then do another layer or two?

Stripping is the worst part of this hobby by far.

Unless you are broke, its probably better to just buy a new kit. Its unlikely that stripping will remove the panel lining, because lining tends to stain the plastic.

You can't fill gaps on a kit that is not painted, unless your filler matches the color of the kit, and even then it probably won't work.

If it's an old friend and you were proud of how it turned out, might be neat to keep him as-is and just get a new kit while still fondly having the old one as a special friend. I'm sort of anticipating that it's not a grunt suit but still. It'd have its own charm by being an arguably "less" or "worse" job but still proudly standing next to recent and more detailed builds. Hopefully it's not an expensive kit, at the very least.

I mostly just want to fill the seams in the legs and arms. I recently started doing that with my newer models, and it's so easy I want to go back to my previous ones and do it. This is one of the few that I top coated since I didn't think I'd want to change anything at the time.

An easy way to strip paint or topcoat is some isoproyl alcohol and a toothbrush, give it a soak and start scrubbing.
A second one is dirt cheap on Mandarake though so I'd just grab a new one and go nuts with that, or instead get her the matching Grandma who's also about 3kish yen on there and fix her up.

Then it really depends on how much patience you have. Online webstores tend to have sales during the holidays, and if you're lucky you can save probably 15-20% more during Black Friday or so.

Whenever I order online, I do so in bulk, to save on shipping costs. It tends to matter more for things like paints though.

I've done all of this with Gundam Marker
I'm not taking them off their stands for you but I did panel-line Mazinkaiser with a humble pour-type black marker. It has details in the shoulders, chest, head, sword, and even pilder, and panel-lining them really makes the details pop.
I SHOULD learn to paint but I have not. But in any case, you can delay getting paint for now. You probably could hand-paint those details but I haven't tried this.

Got a pair of thin blade ones (not single) a while back and they've worked fine, for the price they are pretty good and their other stuff like the glassfiles are perfectly fine too.

speaking of tools I think my DSPIAE single blades are about to give out, their cuts aren't as clean anymore and they often leave a tiny little strip left when I cut.
Guess it's time to decide if I wanna get another or just fork out the cash for a godhand

Yes, it is a stress mark and there is nothing wrong with the lighting.

Here's a different, out of focus shot I didn't use in the collage. You can see the stress on both sides of the cut pretty clearly.
In any case, I did that test with my own hands and I can confirm that the DSPIAE nipper is basically dull compared to any GH.

After applying it, yeah, but after that it sticks fine, I think topcoat helps preserve it though. While applying, you can rub it off with a q-tip or your fingers and some rubbing alcohol or sanitizer. There's probably better ways to do this, but I just apply, rub with my fingers, reapply because I rubbed too much off, rerub, etc.
And apparently you shouldn't use it after building, since if it gets into gaps, it might cause cracks?

You'd think a kitchen knife sharpener has no use in plastic modelling, but then you realize that it's basically a large flat diamond file, 400 grit or so. Very useful when you want to keep a side of a part perfectly flat. Especially well suited for wet sanding resin.

VSMS kits are very high quality but the build process is a bit of a pain
The clear plastic is very hard and brittle, and Volks' gate marks are huge, so cutting off nubs takes some patience
Polishing and surface prep is also extremely important, and fuckups are very difficult to fix because you have to paint straight over the clear plastic with no primer
The joint parts are ABS and require ABS cement, a huge pain in the ass to deal with in my experience

Also, painting GTMs is an unforgiving endeavor, your paintjob has to be perfectly even and consistent because the translucent armor will make any inconsistency in the paintjob glaringly obvious, and paint mixing is a required skill if you don't live in Asia where you can buy Volks' custom paint mixes, or import them from China.

I'm more of a vehicle models guy and I wasn't really sure how to weather gunpla type stuff. I had seen this one on reddit after trying to find any examples of other people's builds (and its what inspired the gold trim in the first place) and I really like the look of it, but he doesn't say how he pulled it off besides it just being dry brushed.

You might want to try something that bites into the plastic more aggressively like a solvent-based acrylic or lacquer, or seal the whole thing in under a layer of clearcoat.
For what it's worth the Revell acrylic I used for mine has held up fine, but I don't handle her very much.

I've never had good luck with vallejo sticking to bare plastic, I've always had prime it beforehand. If you have it, their brush on primer isn't too bad if you're only using it for small stuff like trim and detail work.

I'm a 45 year old man. I've been collecting this and that toyline or card game or series my entire life. I've more than I even remember owning. In my childhood I collected toys like MUSCLE or Battler Beasts, things to play with the local kids. But they were jealous of me and slowly shunned me. In my teens and early 20's I collected Warhammer, Mage Knight and other miniature game pieces and had a fabulous collection. But I would only bring the strongest figures and no one wanted to play with me. Later in life I collected tons of other random things like Gashapon and such for no one's entertainment but my own, but no one ever saw them. Then I followed fads like MLP, Halo/Destiny/CoD Mega Bloks, and specialty toys like Glyos and my collections rivaled even the owners of the IPs! But... I was not humble... and was shunned for being a braggart.

Not too long after that my life started falling apart. Work became increasingly soul-crushing to the point where I could feel myself slipping. In my darkest hours I boxed up EVERYTHING and gave it away to people I knew. If they didn't want it I gave it to charity, and if it was something the charity wouldn't know how to sell, I simply threw it away. Everything. A LIFETIME OF EVERYTHING.

But a single random (and I truly mean random) miracle happened and my planned death ended overnight. I languished for several years not allowing myself a single new hobby since, if I was going to die, it would be less to trash later. But, now, I just recently latched on to Gunpla, making stupidly expensive purchases with some internal intent to fit in with a community I have no reason to be a part of, just hoping to at last find some kinship I know won't come from here.

I always and only see the Shenlong still in stock for dirt-cheap and it's honestly putting me off of the kit. I don't mind Wufei or Wing, but the fact that it's singularly the only non-Leo Wing kit like that where I am makes me wonder if there's something glaringly wrong with it, or if it's just the character or design not being popular.

As you can see in the pic, the green is missing on the shoulders and that's the only issue this kit has, but I prefer not having the green anyway so it's not a bad thing for me at all. In fact Shenlong has overall the tighest joints and that makes it less annoying to pose than some of the other kits here so it's not the worst.

DSPIAE Siren is a decent glass file, but boy is it ever poorly designed.
The back side is a mirror, which looks good in promo pics, but not when you're working with it under a bright overhead light (and if you're working under a magnifier it can literally blind you). Shit Design of the Year right there.

Solution: painter's tape.
