Slender vampire Hordak is best Hordak.
Also something that I really enjoyed in the CGI series was things like Hordak and Sorceress' wings, or Evil-Lin's headdress where it looks like a window into a cosmic background. Like their magic is being fueled by the universe itself.

When will Mattel create new villains? You can't always rotate between evil warriors, horde and snakemen.
Anonymous No.11585567
>>11585533
Do you mean a whole new faction? What would they even make them for there's nothing really happening that would justify the risk without it being related to something old like all the new old snake men from origins. If there was a cartoon of something they'd have a chance but theres still a million characters and history they could adapt so I dont see it ever happening. Not in a nostalgia property like MotU.

Singular new characters maybe. But all I can think of when I say that is purple deadpool

At this point it's risky, at least to the higher ups. Firstly because so much of modern media is based on fueling nostalgia in order to bake in an audience, studios are afraid of change because often when they do make change, they lose the fanbase. And secondly, because they just aren't very good at originality anymore, or at least the ones that are, aren't the ones brought on to big brands because studios want the safe bet.
Which is not to say that it's impossible, I think the safest way would be to do a soft roll out. Pick a character in Skeletor's crew who could conceivably strike out on their own, either Evil-Lyn or Tri-Klops, and have them start recruiting their own minions, that way you can introduce new characters and see how audiences respond. This is easier too if they have a longer running series and are producing episodes weekly, that way they can track toy sales and ratings, "oh that episode with Crunchlor on his own for a lot of the episode was really popular, let's give him more screen time!"
If audiences respond then by the end of a season you could "kill" off Skeletor and have the new characters be the main baddies for a season.

I agree.
Also intriguing that Hordak was going to be "impossibly old; as old as starlight." They were basically calling him the god of fear.
I did not like the way the DC comic handled "cosmic vampire more than a million years old", but it's interesting enough to give another chance.

For real though, the thing I most want to see in MotU fiction now is more focus on the Horde, including showing normal males and females of Hordak's species.
I know worldbuilding this purported galactic empire in a 5-episode miniseries was too big of an ask, but the DC comic didn't do it either. I'd have to do a careful re-read to see if the Horde ever came across as more than 8 or so people who'd been trapped in Despondos, plus a couple people who portaled in (Skeletor, baby Adora) and their robots.

My only problem with expanding Horde lore is that I'd like to keep Hordak as their final boss. I was never a jig fan of Horde Prime sending inspectors to check in on Hordak. I mean he's got his face on the side of battleships and tanks but he's also somehow just middle management?

Personally I like to think of them as escaped criminals from the prison planet who banded together to use Etheria as a backdoor to Eternia (and Grayskull.) All that talk of their galactic empire is just delusions of grandeur.

2) It would explain H on his chest.

Well, Hordak was a Transformer who sometimes turned into one of those tanks with his face. You could think of a Horde governor as just being a more advanced one of Horde Prime's machines.
But I get how the vision of evil as Modernist with banality like middle managers Larry DiTillio put in the series bible isn't what a lot of people want from their toys. Even DiTillio himself went with Hordak being a sorcerer instead of a cyborg manager when brought back to write all his 2002 appearances before the big King Grayskull one.

It finally clicked with me why the Filmation staff thought it was OK to make Catra a regular girl in a red skirt doing a silly cat voice with no explanation: they were just redoing Catwoman from their 1977 Batman cartoon, where Melendy Britt did that voice (and to no one's surprise, Lou Scheimer's main role was Bat-Mite).

I can buy it considering the overlap in 80's toy fandom that was so omnipresent in the 2000's. Honestly reinforces my belief that the inevitable Hasbro MOTU/TF crossover should fixate heavily on Beast Wars. Gygor Primal, Battle Cat Cheetor, B'Boom Beast Man, Tyrantisaurus Megatron. This shit really sells itself. Even regarding the origins figures, a transmetals BW approach probably would have better suited the concept. Just imagine the BW cast as Roboto/Faker styled 5.5. pretenders or something. Anyways since I'm on this TF tangent anyways I wanted to add how much it irked me we didnt get a comic colored movie Apelinq repaint in the ROTB line. Hell they couldnt even be bothered to repaint POTP Optimal Optimus into Primal Prime for the ROTB line. God that movie was such a waste.

I mean between those three groups there's not really a whole lot of conceptual space left for any potential new factions that wouldn't just be stepping on the toes of the existing ones, like there's a reason most fans just kind of lump the Space Mutants in with the Evil Warriors(and similarly with most of the normally unaligned one-off villains from the shows and comics) instead of having a fourth villain faction hanging around(especially since Skeletor ends up leading them anyways in the source material)

meanwhile on the side of good while the Heroic Warriors, Great Rebellion, and Galactic Guardians are technically distinct factions they freely intermesh with each other since none of them really have a distinct theme of their own and there isn't really much reason to keep them separate unless one's doing a specific sort of display

I think it worked because there is enough there in terms of Krass being orphaned as a child that you could turn that into a character trait of her having abandonment issues. It's a shame that the series isn't more expanded upon because even though they don't go far into it, the series does a really good job of adding in at least one thing that makes all the characters feel like they have history. Shit like how Kronos used to be Man-At-Arms for Kind Randor, or Man-E-Faces disfigured himself in pursuit of being a better actor and ended up being shunned, or that Cringer got his name after being captured and mutilated by R'Qazz/Beast Man who wears Cringer's claws as a trophy.

There are good things that can be harvested from the series. The designs for a lot of the characters are good, and even improvements over the originals, like Scorpia and Catra. Even if the show ends up an abysmal failure you take what does work, even if it's something small and you iterate that to improve what comes next. Slavishly staying to what Filmation did and recycling it ad nauseam will kill MOTU. Do I think She-Ra should be a flat-chested dyke moving forward? Fuck no, do I think Catra should be a hot catgirl? Hell yes. Do I think Bow should a black fag? Definitely not, should Scorpia be a buff Gina Carano type instead of the original Joan Rivers-faced 20 pack-a-day voiced monstrosity? Damn straight.

That's hyperbolic. Nu-Ra doesn't take anything away from you but time by engaging with it. It's more accurate to say "you walk around a gallery with 100 paintings and 99 of them are dull but 1 is really inspiring and will stay with you."

>Several anons have pointed out that this thread is not the best place to discuss Nu Ra. It is tangential to toys at best.
Have you been to /co/? it's a shithole and trying to keep any type of MOTU discussion going long-term there is basically impossible. Im on your fucking side here you're too obsessed with smelling gay on everyone and everything to see it.

Imagine guy who stubs his toe and screams in public "Fucking niggers! Fucking faggots! My fucking toe! Bloody woke will pay for this!!"

What do you think will happen?

Will woke become to scared and ashamed to express themselves and world will go back to norm?

Or will be people act more liberal to avoid being associated with machild crying about his toe?

Does the story of Boy Who Cried Wolf tells you anything?

You are woke. You're literally acting like woke.

Here's what libtards do. They release into world shit like MOTU Revelation and wait for praise.

Then the moment they face any criticism, they blame it on bigotry. "Misoginists hate my movie."
"Racist fans didn't bought my comic" etc. They cant comprehend being critisised for other reason.

I can't remember what I got or even if it worked (I kinda remember it not working 100%?)

And here are some highlights of what the keynote speakers had to say of the upcoming β€œMasters of the Universe” Movie:

Why now?
>β€œThe property has never gone away, it continued to reinvent itself. This feels like the perfect moment. Fans have been asking for more and we know there is a trend powered by nostalgia. Most importantly, we have been waiting for the perfect partner and creative team to bring β€˜Masters of the Universe’ to life in a way that feels epic.”

The magnitude of the film:
>"To build a film of the scale and scope, it takes a lot of effort and it’s not easy to pull off,” says Coleman. β€œAudiences are really discerning.”

>β€œThe magnitude of the set and level of detail was out of this world"

On Skeletor and Adam:
>β€œSkeletor is one of the most delicious villains of all-time, but there’s also a story of Adam, who is a regular person and have to grab the power. It’s always within him, and it’s revealed in a powerful way. We have this full dimensional cast and [director] Travis Knight who had a vision. Even if you have never seen β€˜Masters of the Universe,’ it’s a fun, entertaining story.”

What about Easter Eggs?

>"For the long-term fans, there are Easter eggs in the film but stepping back, the entry point for fans is broad. The entry point will be very approachable for everyone… This will be the film everyone will be talking about.”

About Partnering with Amazon MGM:

>β€œAs a studio, we want to put excellence on screen,” Coleman, β€œThere’s an existing fan base, and we can lean into that. It’s not only about what’s new and established, but there are different offerings across all Amazon platforms. With out legacy at MGM, tying it in with Amazon, we have the best of both worlds.”

>"This is a film you must see in theaters, because you will be blown away by the experience. When it comes to Prime video, you can rewatch the moment you want to experience again. It’s not a movie in isolation. People will be wearing the merch, buying the toys and talking about it just like β€˜Barbie.'"

It is truly a tragedy to have a waifu destroyed, so regardless, you have my sympathies. That said Razz seems like more of a lateral move, though losing that hat was a stupid decision. Frosta's design isn't terrible, but making her a child definitely narrows the waifu potential to a very specific kind of anon. I think marrying the arctic gear with her classic look would help make the original design stand out more. I think that's my biggest issue with the Filmation designs, they're all just rail thin chicks with high cheekbones. Like they all look like Pat Benatar, Blondie, or the chicks from ABBA.

>Here is a real question - what % ratio of good/bad do you give New Adventures?
I haven't seen it yet, but I don't totally hate the design work on the characters. I dig the swashbuckling look for He-Man, though it could definitely use a bit more barbarian to it. I think instead of the ponytail they gave him the hair the He-Man figure from the Thundercats crossover has and made him more buff it could be something really special. Over-all missteps and failures like NA, Nu-Ra and even Revelation are worthwhile sometimes because you can learn from them, even if that lesson is "don't do this with the brand."

The designs are basically all there is to take from it. Scorpia is a better design, Furry Catra is a more interesting design, and has the added benefit of immediately getting across the whole cat thing much better than the original design. Which also helps remove the need for the cat vocal ticks. Speaking personally I have always hated whenever an actress (or actor, but it's usually women) gets a cat character and suddenly all their dialogue becomes "mrrrow yess, purrrfect, mrrr hiss" I hate in the original She-Ra, I hated it in the 60s Batman series. Mixing the new and old designs yields great results (picrel).
That said if you don't like the designs then there isn't much to offer you. The artstyle definitely sucks though, it's basically a bean mouth away from looking like Star Vs. The Forces of Evil.

new to this train wreck of a conversation but I'll throw in my 2 cents: 99% of these are bad, but most of the filmation princesses were already pretty poor to begin with so I think there's slim pickings.
Scorpia seems pretty unanimously tolerated. She's admittedly cuter in the Netflix show and doesn't look like a 50 year old tranny. She just looks like a tomboy now.
Everyone else ... Jesus Christ. No. Huntara and Razz got raped by their redesigns. The only thing I kinda like is the difference in body types, but everything else here is just sad.
I'll genuinely say that Double Trouble is an improvement and Catra is isn't a downgrade. Just a step in a different direction.

Snake Men ran dry after Guy 6 or 7, so I don't think this is too hard.

Clawful: leader with most basic gimmick (like every faction leader except Hiss).

Hermit Edge: has combined body armor/helmet/huge shoulder pads shell and one claw hand that's actually a curved sword. He's the stereotypical Eastern aged mentor, living in a retreat on a tidal island when not with the team.

Pink Ghost: token girl but also GitD undead

Snapurai: based on the Japanese crab that looks like a samurai's mask.

Decapod: Use Modulok body segments to get a true ten-limbed crab person.

Yes 80s were glorious. I don't mind a little more variety but I'd take this over Nu Ra or the butch af women from Kevin Smith's He-Man. Honestly, there seems to be a dynmaic of looking back on the Filmation designs in a better light becase Nu Ra showed us how not to do.
>I dig the swashbuckling look for He-Man, though it could definitely use a bit more barbarian to it
Anons who have been in this general for the long haul have heard me beating this drum for a long time. But I genunely think NA would have beneifited from pic rel for their hero. Personally I think it should have been He-Man's son going into space because that gives the writers more of a clean slate to work with. But from a pure character design stand point, this look does a much better job of updating Motu standards. We still got the furry boots, the harness but looking more spacey and the classic power sword. One of the more common compliants is that He-Man didn't look like himself and this would have gone a long way to correcting that.

I dont really know anything about NA of Heman so I googled it to see some of the designs and this was the first picture that popped up. And yeah it...really lost its identity. I just cant see Heman with a new hairstyle very easily. And pants. Even what you posted is too off for me.

My only idea on how to fix it is instead if destroying castle Greyskull and flying into space in a spaceship Greyskull should have became a macross captain harlock assed battleship. Playing up the space pirate themes would have been great too because you have Greyskull and Skeletor. Give them actual flying boats that were mechanical and could fly in space. Pirate themed crew that were also half cyborg. Roboto, Comet men etc could have been added. I don't know anything.

I'm not sure if Grayskull being destroyed was canon. It could be my faulty memory for sure, but I thought that was an early iea that got dropped. I seem to remember Hydron and Flipshot just showing up with the spaceship and off they go.
My pitch would be to make the protagonist Dare, the Son of He-Man. Eternia has been at peace long enough for Dare to be born and grown into a teenager, trying to find out how to make a name for himself after his father's legacy.
Flipshot and Hydron show up, explaining that they need the legendary hero to help them with the Space Mutants who are on route to Eternia in their hijacked prison moon Nordor. After the apperance of a bio mechanical horror that calls himself Skeletor, the Mutants are more organized, capable and focused. Taking their former prison as their head quarters and bringing it right back to He-Man's doorstep.

King He-Man is older and has ties that bind him in Eternos, so its agreed that his son Dare is going to go in his place to find out if this really is the return of Skeletor and put a stop to the threat of the Mutants.

Because if its not He-Man, the hero can finally wear pants. It's cold in space.

>Yes 80s were glorious.
I don't disagree, I'll take thin over "body positivity" fat chicks or amorphous blobs any day. My issue is that Filmation's habit of recycling animation meant that all the women in She-Ra looked very same-y and on top of that, really waifish. I want a She-Ra who looks looks like the peak of physicality, and for the rest of the cast to have distinct looks, rather than Filmation's borderline palette swap design work.
Which is not to say Nu-Ra actually achieved this, the designs are definitely distinct, and as discussed some are an improvement, but Glimmer doesn't need to be pudgy, and Perfuma doesn't need to be designed in a way that the fan theory is she is actually a cross-dressing boy.
I think the issue with She-Ra as much as male fans (like myself) might like her, she is primarily designed to appeal to little girls. Nu-Ra was designed by Stevenson to appeal to their own pre-troon mentality and the Smith series is designed to appeal to angry 30-something women, so the execution is flawed in both circumstances.

>But I genunely think NA would have beneifited from pic rel for their hero. Personally I think it should have been He-Man's son
100% agree on both counts. I just watched the NA pilot (the series is up on Youtube officially) and not only does Adam barely resemble himself (Skeletor too for that matter) it also sucks that he is immediately stripped of his supporting cast. Hell it might have even been a good idea to make it Adam's grandson or great grandson. Have the pilot's prologue say something like "Eternia was placed in great peril, by Skeletor, but thanks to the efforts of He-Man and his heroic friends Skeltor's evil was defeated and peace was brought to the land. But now a new darkness approaches from the depths of space, and a new hero must take on the power of Grayskull, and save Eternia once again!"
That way you give the original cast an automatic happy ending to their story, and set the stage for something new.

Yeah I see where you are coming from about most of the Princess's being palette swaps.
I'm also fortunate to have a young lady who lives Motu and we end up watching a lot of the filmation shows. Her reactions are a good gauge, at least for me, about what characters are worth having in Origins. Frosta and Perfuma by far have the most distinct and memorable personalities that transcend the palette swap. Glimmer makes the cut because she's in all the media. Razz and Kowl make her laugh to. But the rest she never really mentions or asks for a toy.
At least with Bow she gave me permission to buy him for her.
She really liked Entrapta from Nu Ra and while I mostly tried to tune out that show what I did catch she seemed fun and energetic.
You can tell Nu Ra was shit because she would say things like "I only watch this because its more She Ra but everyone is dumb" or "why did they draw everyone ugly?"

And the show totally lost her on the last episode when Catra and She Ra kiss. The kid was so offended..."they are FRIENDS and thats how people in love kiss!" And we go back to filmation episodes but never Nu Ra.

It's telling that Castaspella and Mermista had their own kingdoms with episodes about retaking or defending them and still couldn't be memorable. Also Glimmer's mother.

(Angella looks younger than present-day Glimmer and Adora in the flashback to when Glimmer was a toddler. Was she a teen mother? They also explicitly say it's Angella and Micah's 20th wedding anniversary in that ep, meaning Glimmer can only be 18 without being conceived out of wedlock.)

'Magine that Islam is the native religion on Etheria and the Horde is supposed to represent Christianity.

Yep, this. I remember wishing the Inspector had been a red-skinned Hordak or something, so the people from Horde World wouldn't just be human.

>Mermista had a kingdom? I can only vaguely recall her splashing water on people.

"The Pearl". The Horde wants to steal the kingdom of Salineas' magic pearl, which teaches Mermista's father that fighting for justice is more important than peace. Pretty unmemorable for all that, unfortunately.

>Doesnt help that Mermista's design is 80 percent grey featureless silhouette with some details. It looks decent in mermaid mode, less on land.

Exactly. Almost all gray skintight clothing up past her hips to the natural waist. They were trying to keep the parts that are a fish tail in the water the same color, and it looks lame. Maybe the tail should have turned into a skirt with bare legs under it?

>Behind this long name lies a concept whose history was based on the He-Man animated series and dealt with the following generation. The focus is HE-RO, the new hero of Eternia and also He-Man's adopted son. The main villain is still (or rather, again) Skeletor, and while numerous new characters are introduced into the myth of Eternia, numerous old acquaintances also appear.He-Ro, Son of He-Man begins with Skeletor's "final" defeat. Adam/He-Man names the boy Dare and adopts him in a formal ceremony. But it's only when he has to choose between the magic sword and his kingdom during an attack by Skeletor that Adam realizes that the time has come to hand the magical weapon over to his successor. As Prince Dare, he would have had to get used to life in β€œcivilization” and his role in the royal court. Lou Scheimer Productions wanted to keep the identity of his parents a big secret, which would only have been revealed in the very last episode of the series. It was Lou Scheimer himself who revealed shortly after the He-Ro concept bible was published that Dare's mother was indeed She-Ra. Through his time in the woods, Dare would have had some enhanced abilities, including finer hearing and silent movement in the dark. As He-Ro, these powers would have been further enhanced, which would have made him stand out more from his predecessor He-Man. However, he misses the days when he could become He-Man at any time, which would have led to occasional appearances by He-Man in the new series. In this case, however, Dare could not transform into He-Ro - both of them could only assume their alter egos if they shouted their magic formulas together while holding the magic sword in times of greatest danger. With Teela now in the role of the mature queen, LSP created a new character as a potential love interest for Dare.

Cringer could have transformed into Battle Cat like before and taken the role of Dare's minder at Adam's behest. However, he wouldn't have gotten along particularly well with Battle Bird. He would have had a very loose mouth.Man-E-Faces and Ram Man would have been other acquaintances from the old days. Thank you. Today was much more calm compared to yesterday. I guess Tiffany and Anon are probably to busy with that erotic roleplaying to post.

This pitch is so cool that I get depressed anytime I look over it again. It's exactly what the property needed at the time, and it could have done so much to keep it alive in the public conscious.

Ghostbusters (Real, not Filmation) got Extreme Ghostbusters at the same time Lou wanted to do this. It was the right time.

The man knew his stuff. It's a shame Matty didnt listen. Atleast in similar cases (Transformers with Transtech, TMNT with the CGI 1998 pilot, etc) fans ultimately got something better. MOTU fans were essemtially ignored for nearly 12 years after NA bombed. I guess it could be worse though. Look at how Matty handled Street Sharks.

Skeleteen was Skeletor's son in the 1988 Son of He-Man pitch. King He-Man believed Eternia was about to explode like Krypton and had his infant son put in a rocket. Skeletor snuck Skeletot in. He-Ro landed on Primus and was raised by Darius, while Skeletot got adopted by Slush Head.

Son of a bitch. They're probably moving them onto Prime because Amazon MGM is making the movie. Fuck that noise though, I'm not paying for streaming. Maybe they'll re-release the series on DVD/Blu-Ray.
