/cg/ - Customs General - All Hallows Eve
What’s on the workbench, /toy/?

Sculpts, castings, original plushies, 3D prints, dioramas, mods, kitbashes, and repaints are all welcome!

Post WIPs, finished projects, ideas, techniques, ask for advice, and most of all, have fun!

HELPFUL TIPS:
-Invest in a rotary tool such as a dremel for sanding/sculpting, especially a flexible extension tip.
-Pin vises for drilling holes can be found at hobby stores like Hobby Lobby and are great for making peg holes.
-For soft, flexible parts get Sugru silicone putty and Oyumaru
-Hardware epoxy putties such as Waterweld, KwikWood, and PlasticWeld are similar to milliput, greenstuff, and apoxie, can be cheaper some times, and can be found at local hardware stores such as Lowes, Ace, and Home Depot.
-Bootleg figures make great custom-fodder, especially if the legit figures are pricey.
-Body-chan/kun, Figma Archetype He/She, and Sozai-chan/kun are great base bodies for import-style human characters.

Jin is pretty much finished aside from a new scarf (on the way) and working on his punch/kick fire effects. He was made from a Secret Wars Beyonder upper body, 3d print modded Ryu head (ebay), Solid snake bandana, AoA Gambit arms/legs/feet/belt, 2-pack Secret Wars Dr Doom hands, Star wars Krrsantan shoulder pads, UV resin, various fodder knife/pouches/straps, metal Gundam caps, and a scarf made by putting bendy weird between two pieces of white duct tape. Unfortunately the tape eventually starts to split apart so I ordered a Figuarts Apocalypse Zero Exoskeleton figure to swipe the white articulated scarf from

Jin is painted with Testors Aztek pearlescent white, grey-blue shading and details, then sealed with MTN acrylic matte so he can be posed and handled. I'm going to add whatever I can to him over the next few years and want to make a Blodia fist at some point!
JinSaotome No.11594943 >>11594946
WIP of the fiat effect. Need to add the fire trails around the inside and paint it clear, airbrush the white blast on the front. Also Jin's legs are the 3-pack Gambit (Psylocke, Banshee) not AoA's.
JinSaotome No.11594946
>>11594943
The effect came from Diamond Select Avatar figure and I had to remove the inner fireball blast, then add a soft plastic fire ring to get it to snug on to Jin's fist. I'm also eyeing the Tamashii impact shock effect set....

Reworking the blank body to remove reliance on wire "pins" (and also improve tolerances and general aesthetic/engineering). Arms have been heavily redone; upper arm is now more seamless, with a Figma-style disc-hinge at the shoulder slotting into the bicep and going into a balljoint at the chest. The bicep swivel has been moved to above the elbow with an offset sphere-hinge replacing the pin. I feel this style works better for smaller figures than the below the shoulder swivel (which works better on thicker or more "defined" arms). Need to add the connector between the elbow joint halves but that's easy enough.
I need to learn to use FreeCAD to design these joints honestly. Adding the chamfers, bevels etc to avoid sharp corners (and the stress fractures that go with them) is tricky in Blender, whereas parametric modelling would make them super simple and I could just import the joints into Blender after the fact.
Anonymous No.11595087 >>11595772
X-ray view of the peg arrangement. Should allow for good range without getting gappy. Sculpt needs some tidying up on the forearm but again, easy enough.

Patrician taste in physiques, anon. Though I'm more of a Venus of Willendorf body type guy. Depending on your resources both digitally and IRL you could use my recent 3D model as a base and remove the belly and shrink down the tits either in a 3D program or by printing it and modding IRL with putty and cutting/carving tools.

Pic related is up for sale as-is on Cults3D (the OP pic has an earlier WIP pic of the model). Boolean as you see fit.

Where do i get started reading up on putting together custom 1/12(i think?) dolls? Been eyefucking these chinese chun li dolls on ebay for months, $200+ and thinking i could get a head + my own choice of body for around that, are there guides/suggestions i can get for what to look for?

also part of me wants to figure out making figures of female characters that get not even official release treatment but again wouldnt know were to start.

also saw theres bodies that support the figma joints, would be neat to get a body for my ulala figma. though then theres getting her clothes.. overall this looks like a fun rabbithole.

So I'm wondering if anyone knows of lump of noodles that could be used as a "spaghetti kamehameha"? I was trying to think of a goofy or neat accessory for a Mario figure and that's what popped into my head. No disrespect meant to Italians, I just thought it'd be amusing to put him in a pose like this with Bowser. I have made a visual aid for you all. I hope you enjoy.

is there a reason to print it at a tilt like this? wouldn't you waste less resin on the supports if you did it flat?
Anonymous No.11601757 >>11601762
>>11601754
yeah when its an a angle there is less of the model pulling off of the film of your printer. so you get less warping, sliding, layer shifting, and if you really fucked up, pulling the print off the plate.

pic related, 1st is just flat, look how much surface is pulling on teh film, vs 2nd at a angle, as i have printed, much less pull on the film.
Anonymous No.11601762 >>11601763
>>11601757
What's film in this context? It sounds like you're trying to say less contact area on the plate is better, but there's already a... what do you call, it, 'build plate' sitting under the supports, so I don't see what the difference is. Fundamentally, it HAS a flat bottom already. Just a flat bottom that you remove and throw away. are you saying the bottom tends to get ruined, so you should make sure the entire bottom is supports?
Anonymous No.11601763 >>11601766
>>11601762
the FEP is the plastic layer that comes into contact with the LCD screen, and your resin, as your model prints, it stretches out the FEP.
When the printer starts curing, the resin hardens, and sticks to the FEP, this is when the build plate pulls of the model off of the plastic FEP sheet.
You want to minimize how much pulling distorts your freshly cured resin print, this is where printing at a angle comes in handy. there are other tools, like the speed the build plate that raises off of the FEP film, but for the most part, printing at a angle solves a lot of these issues.

GOT IT, I get you now. You're saying doing it this way EVENS OUT THE FORCES so it won't warp as it's pulled off. This makes sense to my brain. Neat.

you know your shit, I have a friend who's had nothing but failed prints.. one, the shits absolutely refuse to stick to the print plate (I had an interesting idea for fixing that but apparently it wouldn't work well), and another (maybe same guy but different printer? I canna remember) it just makes like huge masses of what looks like spider-man's webbing, instead of what it's meant to. I think that one's PLA.
Anonymous No.11602098 >>11602346
>>11601766
Different anon, but spider-web/bird’s nest with PLA is from ambient air temps being too cold while printing. The stringy reside of the heated filament should drip away or pull back into the heated tip if the air is room temp or so, but lower ambient temps cause the stringy reside to solidify in between the nozzle moving about where it’s not extruding, creating thin webs. Easy fixes are getting a large box to cover put over the printer to insulate it, or just keeping the air temp (while indoors) at room temp the whole time it’s printing. There are also heated and insulated enclosures one can buy for their printer too.

Taking a break from coomer stuff for a bit.

Already have some test prints ordered and in-production.

Before anyone asks, this was a reverse-engineering of a 3D scan I bought off Cults3D. I've had so many hours dumped into painstakingly redoing surface manifolds that glitched during the .sldprt -> .step file saves to have back ups of major milestones in the sculpts of parts. The chest and head were each nightmares of 20 separate stages of back-ups of the designs to convert to .step files and re-save as .sldprt files that have minimal feature trees and thus little or no individual processes that can become faulty from file corruption. I regret nothing.

Thanks!
The neck joint is a barbell-hinge combo to allow a much better range of motion for the head. While not fully vertical, the figure will be able to look up and down thanks to the barbell diaphragm joint and the barbell/hinge neck. Haven’t started on the lower body yet (hands are next), but if possible so want this figure (once assembled) to be capable of assuming a curled, fetal position. Even if that isn’t 100% attainable, Scorpy here is gonna be limber as fuck.

Ah, well, I’m trying not to deviate too much from the Kenner figure’s sculpt and proportions, and the original Scorpion Alien had not much of a neck to begin with due to the exploding gimmick. Basically the rim of the shirt neck locked the collar of the chest pieces together when the β€˜heart’ inside them clicked into the trigger-sear in the hips. Look up eBay listings of original Kenner Scorpion Aliens and you’ll see. The Kenner Warrior Alien from the Aliens vs Predator 2-pack is actually the one closest to the original film Big Chap from the Kenner 90s line, including having a slightly taller neck than the Scorpion and being much leaner.
