If you want regions, look at demographic maps. For specific things to do National Trust and similar properties are probably a good call.

By the way, on talking about your heritage, that'll be fine talking about your grandma coming over to the USA on the Queen Mary or whatever if it comes up (i.e. "so why did you come to England?"). In my experience, English people like to here those kinds of stories.
