Enormous stretches of the California coast offer what I consider a much more beautiful natural landscape—you can find long wild coastline with mountains in the background, practically undeveloped and sparsely populated. And I personally find the dry Western climate a lot more comfortable than the humid Southeast. But only a relatively small portion of California beach country is consistently warm enough for long enough to use the beaches for much stereotypical beach-vacation stuff, and even at its warmest, the Pacific Ocean is going to be colder than the Atlantic off the Florida coast. Anywhere north of maybe San Luis Obispo, the water’s too cold to swim in without a wetsuit for most of the year. Good for water sports, surfing, fishing, and on warm days, hanging out in the sun; but the flat, mostly more crowded, more recreation-development-saturated, and to me at least, much uglier Florida coast is the obvious choice if a big part of your beach goal is actually going swimming. Florida’s more resorty/touristy, more tropical. Nearly all of the CA coast is more mixed-use and outdoorsy, even the most stereotypically warm and beachy stretches down south.
