Got a job offer here. Would be a 2-year contract in the Albuquerque area. I’ve never been. Heard very positive and very negative things about this state. The climate and cost of living seem nice. Crime and culture less so.

Has anyone been? What was your experience visiting New Mexico?

intel? i did the same thing….do not move to new mexico. i signed a multi year deal and threatened to quit after nine months and they reluctantly moved me back to oregon after i raised hell to several layers of management. nm has good food and the weather is ok…besides that the people are poor and stupid and inconsiderate and distrust people of other races and will steal your car or shit from your front yard. its the worst state besides mississippi. if you have to move there do not live in albuquerque or rio rancho…commute from santa fe or east mountain like cedar crest or madrid. albuquerque is the worst city in america

I don't live there anymore but I spent most of my life there before leaving for college.
Pros:
>Lots of space, literally tons of parks, trails, middle of nowhere mesas, if that's your thing
>Cheap CoL, but I've heard it has been increasing lately
>Very unique cultural blend of Pueblo Indian/Mexican/White American
>Amazing food
>Generally slow pace of life
>People are pretty chill and generally libertarian about things
Cons:
>You have to drive everywhere. Public transit in ABQ is a joke.
>Inept local municipal government in ABQ, but the state government is pretty decent
>While a decent-sized city, there still isn't a ton to do compared to other cities in the US. When I was a teen my friends and I used to just drive around and bum at malls and restaurants.
>Slow pace of life comes with people generally being lackadaisical about things. We have a saying called "mañana time" that describes this. This seems to seep into NM culture quite a bit, even where it matters (e.g. government).
>Nightlife fucking sucks and revolves around craft beer breweries/gastropubs or shitty country bars, mostly
I can go into more detail if you want. Honestly for 2 years I'd recommend just doing it. New Mexico is a very unique place and despite its flaws, it's somewhere I constantly reminisce about.

I lived there for a year and fucking HATED it.
It fucking sucks.
I dont know what these other crackheads are talking about because the food fucking SUCKED and everything was crazy expensive, except liquor, liquor is cheap there.

They do weird shit like not having fajita at most of the mexican restaurants. They use "shredded beef", you dont know disappointment until you pay 20$ for a quesadilla, that has what tastes like pot roast. Same for nachos. Who the fuck wants pot roast nachos.
Crackheads EVERYWHERE. Stabbings constantly, and car theft is a huge problem there, ABQ has the most car thefts in the country outside of california, and multiple people on my job sites lost their full blown welding rig trucks, in broad daylight, in olive garden parking lots and such. Many such cases.

The only thing to do there is Indian casinos, where they dont serve you liquor or beer unless you go to the bar area, so no sitting at a table or slot machine and having free drinks brought to you like vegas or louisiana, and I never once won. They dont have to report their payouts like non indian casinos, so I suspect their machines are all rigged.

Highest rate of drunk driving in the country too, so the cops are on everybodies ass all the time, and set up sobriety checkpoints at random all over.

Fucking natives stumbling around on a cocktail of meth and vodka.

Drive around and look at all the cars without tires, motherfuckers be stealing the shit out of em.

Every other day hear about a coworker having to draw their pistol on people breaking into their cars. I FUCKING SUCKED.

It is pretty though, nice mountains, cool sunsets. Thats the only nice thing I have to say about it.
Highly recommend avoiding at all cost.

Things to do:
>Old town - fun to walk around the first time, wouldn't go back regularly unless you're there to buy a specific item
>Tram to the peak of the Sandia Mountains
>Walking in the Bosque - I used to do this a lot as a kid and teen
>Indian casinos - can be pretty fun for a dog day afternoon, some places have $5 minimum table games
>Malls - Coronado is the best one, avoid Cottonwood
>Nob Hill - recently gentrified district with some cool shops near UNM, don't wander too far north on Central though, that leads you to the war zone
>ABQ zoo - I haven't been in a while but it's so cheap and they have a good assortment of animals
>South valley - people say it's dangerous but it's not, it's just working class. Some of the best New Mexican food is here
>Walk around UNM campus
>See an Isotopes game (Colorado Rockies AAA affiliate)
>See an NM United game - haven't done this but I recently saw my local MLS team and enjoyed myself
>Any one of the numerous outdoor activities that you can find within or just outside of ABQ
>Day trip to Santa Fe
Places to eat:
I don't know much about fine dining, but these were my go-to spots in ABQ:
>Dion's Pizza
>Twisters or Blakes (for their breakfast burritos)
>Il Vicino (italian)
>Bosque Brewing company
Places to live:
The top places to live in ABQ if you can afford it are:
>NE heights - really nice area, is where the rich people live
>Rio Rancho - suburb just outside of ABQ, very quiet, suburban life. Traffic might suck if you're commuting.
Places to avoid:
>international district/"war zone" - very infamous area near UNM campus, was where the West Mesa murderer would find victims
>Generally anywhere near UNM is kinda sketchy
Let me know if there is any other information you want to know. Don't listen to this anon >>2787794. The property crime in ABQ is bad, yeah, but I felt way less safe in Southern California than I ever felt in ABQ. The food is also amazing, but might not appeal to some.

Oh I forgot to mention one other thing, and its how fucking UGLY everyone is there.

Probably because substance abuse is such a huge issue there, and these leathery old hags roasting in the desert sun, people just in general not taking care of themselves whatsoever.

I have never seen a more haggard population.

The only pretty girls I ever saw were at the casino or the tiddy bars. Every cashier and waitress looks like they are on their last leg of life and ready to lock into an iron lung.

I did. I lived in Moriarty, New Mexico from june 2023 to march 2024. About 45 minutes away from ABQ, and there wasnt shit to do there, so every time we got a day off all the boys went into the city.

>it’s New Mexican food anon. Not mexican food
Well n*w m*xican food fucking sucks bro.

>Did not happen
Yes, two dudes DID have their welding rigs stolen in ABQ.
>90% of states with casinos dont let you drink on the gaming floor
Did I mention 90% of other states, or did I mention two specific states, like Louisiana and Nevada?
>do not exist
Pot roast nachos are real. Look up Chilli hills [moriarty and edgewood locations], or ironically, a place called NACHOS in moriarty, they both offer only SHREDDED BEEF, no fajita, shredded beef is essentially pot roast.
>Objectively false
And yes, everything cost twice as much as it does back in Texas. A single ribeye steak was close to 20$ in NM, can be found for 5$ in TX.

The ONLY bar in the town I was staying [Blackie's], had 2 stabbings in the same week. Fucking grim place to live. Absolute bottom of the barrel.

Why the fuck do you love that shithole so much, its literally the most god awful place I have ever lived in my entire life. Im glad you like it there, please never leave, you belong their with the other losers.

Louisiana had casinos that gives you free mixed drinks while you played penny slots, the women were pretty, and I actually won money multiple times.

The food was amazing, you could eat better at a gas station in Louisiana than you could in the whole of new mexico.

Those swamp folks are so laid back and chill, chugging beers and fishing all day, compared to new mexico, where the natives are all on crank, talking to themselves and off balance bouncing down the sidewalk. Sloppy motherfuckers.

It's night and day. I had no trouble with the coloreds in LA. They kept to themselves. Got called sweetie, cutie, darling, honey so many times from some cute black girls working as cashiers or waitresses. Thats good ol fashion southern hospitality.

You aint gonna get alot of smiles in NM, they are bitter, rude, untrustworthy, nasty, ugly people with raspy voices from all the crack they smoke, and covered in scratches from all the meth they smoke. They would stab you for a few loose cigarettes.

What state is number 1 in crime?

>New Mexico generally has the highest violent crime rate among US states

780 per 100,000 population.

Thats higher than detroit michigan, chicago, illinois, oakland or comptan california, literally the most violent state out of all 50. The worst place to be in all of America. Sure other states have problem cities, but new mexico is just straight up a problem STATE, incomparable to any other. Violent crime is rampant, and property crime is off the charts.

You are 7,200 feet CLOSER to the sun in santa fe, 5,200 in ABQ. THATS A MILE CLOSER TO THE SUN.

I have been to all those places, I would take a hot Houston summer over any of em.

"It's a dry heat" is the phrase you guys love to spew.

But when you actually go outside, and walk around, the asphalt is so hot it will melt your shoe rubber, like your walking through a spot of maple syrup, you will feel your shoes stick to the asphalt/cement.

And before this guy calls me a liar, AGAIN...
>In New Mexico during the summer, asphalt surfaces can become extremely hot, with temperatures potentially reaching 140°F (60°C) or higher on particularly sunny days.

I dont know why he wont admit it's a shithole.

It's a land so bad we can't even give it away to the indians.

nah, when places see you live in NM they use it as an excuse to pay you less since the cost of living is low. Even my first job out of college they used the whole "well the national average for your position is ___ but since we're in nm we can pay you less lol"

this place truly sucks, is running out of water, and i can't wait to leave.

I’ve been to New Mexico half a dozen times during the summer staying in Santa Fe. Santa Fe is one of the most unique and tranquil places in the whole country and you’ll love it if you’re into the arts. I bet you’ll get bored staying there all year round though. The downtown area is quite safe unlike many places in the rest of the stats. Albuquerque is kinda meh all around.

Agree. Santa Fe is a really cool town to visit for a couple days. Wouldn't want to live there though unless you're either an artist or you're a big outdoors person. Good hunting, fishing, and skiing nearby. Art galleries all over. Close to Taos which is like a concentrated Santa Fe.
Albuquerque isn't as bad as its reputation but it's not noteworthy. Didn't hate it, don't have a reason to go back.

Hey man,
It boils down to this. You keep calling me a liar, when I am just giving my opinion and answering OP's question. You are acting just like I said New Mexicans are. Bitter, rude, nasty and ugly.
I havent attacked you personally, I havent disregarded your opinion, maybe you like the desert mountains, maybe I like the coast, to each their own. Live and let live.
You have spent so much time, just posting over and over that my experience there is just lies.
I have circumnavigated the globe. I have been to more states than I haven't, I have visited over 20 countries. You are on the travel board but it doesnt sound like youve traveled at all. I assure you brother, it gets better.
I felt safer in Mexico city at 2am, or tijuana at 4 am. It was nicer in the back alleys of italy, more comfortable wading through the immigrants in paris. More relaxed in thailand, more laid back in the red light district of amsterdam, kicking my feet up in london, and more at home in the phillipines. I have never felt more unease than I did in shithole new mexico. It really is a hellish place. Live a little and get out more.

Current southern NM resident, with friends in and from ABQ.
If you like it here is really decided by what you look for as fun/entertainment. Natural beauty, hiking, national parks are pretty big, and folks that enjoy thos have a great time.
Manmade stuff is pretty lacking though. Generally not much, even in the cities, wham compared to other parts of US.
DO NOT bring a family here, especially ABQ. In addition to the crime being nuts in the area, education is terrible. In general, be anywhere but the bigger cities and its a quiet, beautiful place with lots of nature. Just get used to bottled water and carry a gun.

Not relevant. No one said Texas isn't hot. Your reading comprehension is the issue.

Do you understand how sweat works? lol
When you're sweating, it cools your body down, and when theres no humidity, and your sweat is immediately evaporating, you dont cool down.

I work outside and dont need sunscreen or a "gator" [face covering] to keep from getting burned in Texas, something absolutely necesary in NM.

"BUT ITS A DRY HEAT" is the biggest cope lmao.

Not relevant. No one said Texas isn't hot. Your reading comprehension is the issue.

Everyone knows how the heat index works. Every weather report has a "feels like" section. The sun doesnt feel like a lazer beam in Texas though. You clearly dont understand elevation or humidity.
We are talking in circles at this point. I dont know how I can word this any more simple for you and Im tired of trying to.

The fact you are scrambling for articles and charts and screaming "just trust the science, its actually not that hot!!!!!"
Dude I lived there, I know how it is. Get out of your comfort zone. See the world. NM is among the worst places on earth. Its basically pakistan.

Why did we decide Alamagorda New Mexico was the perfect place to test our nuclear bombs?
Why did we push so many indian tribes there to make reservations?
Because it's shit land that no one wants to live in and is not really worth anything.

The worst part of this whole conversation is I dont even think youre trolling, you truly love that hell hole. Good for you man, Im happy for you, hope you get out more though. No matter where you go, it will always be better than New Mexico.

dating in new mexico is the worst ive ever experienced. almost all local women have kids by 20-22 so its all single moms. your only chance to date here is to meet someone who recently moved in. cheating is expected. its kind of like high school cause even in albuquerque (city of 600k) its very insular…everyone goes to the same bars and hangs out with the same people in their corner of the city. everyone knows who everyone sleeps with. it feels far smaller than other medium size cities

High humidity creates haze in the atmosphere and makes the sun's heat less intense.
>>2792375
>90 F with 90% RH
Doesn't happen. 90 F with an 81 F dewpoint - as high a dewpoint as any region in America ever gets - is a 75% relative humidity level. Besides, if you have good surface blood circulation, you can stay cool at 90 F without sweating, simply because your skin is 98 F and radiates heat into the air. This radiative cooling occurs regardless of humidity level. When it's 104 F outside, you have to sweat to keep your body temp at 98 F, even while sitting in the shade with a breeze, or you will overheat.

American heat index charts are bullshit and only valid for fat people with poor surface blood circulation.

The keyboard melts under my fingertips as I write this. A summer day in New Mexico. Hell on earth. AC has long since quit, beaten down by the relentless sun. Quite simply the hottest place on earth. Coronal mass ejections erupt from the sand around me as the water in my body turns to steam and cooks me inside-out. The only reprieve from the nonstop pain of the world's most punishing sun is the sweet release of death. I will never know comfort for I am in New Mexico in June. Cold blooded creatures bake on the sidewalks, bait for the vultures who instantly combust upon landing. Truly the 8th circle of Hell.
