>>2789248As a descendant of peasants and barbarians, I don't go out of my way to commingle with the "cultured" tourist crowds gawking at Notre Dame and Angkor Wat and the Sphinx and the Mayan pyramids. Gawking is a big racket, and the hive-mind element is strong among the gawkers.
>If nobody spends a bunch of money and time to see X, well then, X must not be worth seeing. This herd mentality is the driver behind mass tourism. Much as they complain about the crowds, everyone wants to feel like they're a part of some phenomenon which is much bigger than themselves.
>>2789276Two nights is the perfect length of stay, because it gives you a full 24 hour period of freedom from the routine moving to a new place. The biggest plus of staying longer than two nights, IMO, is being better able to suss out the good restaurants instead of picking a place to eat at random (which frequently results in disappointment and/or excessive spending). But longer stays inevitably mean less country covered.
