At least 3 years ago when I was there you would have to be an absolute retard to not save money teaching in Korea.

Like order food delivery multiple times a day or something and pay for rent rather than just accepting the free place they give you

What a load of copium BS. Even if all the root causes he brought up werent there, the TEFL industry is absolutely fucking bloated, and even a change-averse Japan is getting better at English.

The combination of having an offer at capacity at all times and a (even if slightly) decreasing demand is what causes english teachers to end up like this. But the only ones that truly suffer are the ones without relevant qualifications. Anyone with a masters and above is living a reasonably good life, and always will.

The only true solution โ€and the one he isn't mentioning here is that the only way to make it in this market is to specialize yourself. A kid I know enrolled to Osaka Uni for a masters in English while teaching it so he gets a local degree and gets a more legit resume. Way less expensive than doing it in America, too, and while the establishment is prestigious, anyone with a bach degree and a celta could get admitted.

this is the problem though, vast majority of teachers in japan are unskilled retards living alone for the first time ever.

that's the nigger in the woodpile here. it's not that ESL is bloated or a bad career path, it's that there's a whole industry of bringing unskilled retards into japan. the government even encourages this by allowing people with non-relevant degrees into JET.

I was under the impression that most people who went to teach english in asian countries were already bankrupt to begin with
as in like 22 year olds fresh out of college with 500 bucks to their name or something

Those make up some people, but honestly there's more people in their 30's who have just been there too long

I imagine there are a few EFL teachers on this board. Is it still a big industry? I don't hear many people talking about it these days compared to like 5-10 years ago.

there are tons of unskilled retards being brought into every western country. if you go to tokyo now every other convenience store or ramen place will have a random jeet working there, they're bringing in hundreds of thousands of them

tefl fag here. started at 18, now 35. 20s were kino, but the realithy is now bad. I have 0 idea how to fit into the world beyond teaching.
I made shit happen beyond the class, then brexit, covid and ukraine fucked up every fucking thing.

It's really really tough to stay motivated. now i'm surviving on random contracts here and there.

If you've been there for 15 years why not just try to get a regular wagie job instead or go back to school briefly for a JP masters and become a 'normal' japanese school teacher or something?

I'm not in japan. tefling elsehwhere. literally had a great business starting up until covid, then the impact of brexit, and ukraine killed all chances of rekindling things and buying a house.

he's talking about the actual JET program, not the JEET program where half of india has decided to move to Shibuya and half of Africa to Roppongi.

ESL is a bad career path IF you're unskilled, BECAUSE it's bloated. 40 years ago you could come with no degrees, only your cock and a knife and you'd still make it because nobody knew about this shit and you'd be the proud owner of your own private school before you reached retirement age.

But regarding the video, I find TEFLers to have such a lack of vision that you can't even feel sad for them. The youtubers only ever show and talk about their own experience in the strictest of ways. Nothing about others who have somehow made it by not being teachers, or by being actual graduates who made it to positions far more prestigious than your neighborhood kindergarten. What makes it worse is that they're being sneaky fucks about it and never even try to pretend that there are other ways than starting a fucking youtube channel or "just save up lol"

nothing in this video suggests that the "dream" of working indentured servitude in japan is dead. on the contrary, he's giving you a blueprint for how to realistically live an extraordinarily terrible existence as a modern burakumin in japan

Getting on JET and treating it as an extended vacation for a year or two before flying home to rejoin the real world is the only way to go. If you end up working long-term in some shitty eikaiwa for a black company, that's your fault

The competition to go to Japan allows that incredibly low pay. You'd have to already be rich otherwise it is not worth it.
