is the bikepacking thread on /n/ dead?

>>2789831 (OP)
>beijing to hanoi
china in general is insanely cool for bikepacking
have done multiple trips
also if you intend do go along the coast, don't, it makes things much harder and really is not that nice

>Lisbon to Turkey
obviously don't do this during mid summer
I felt like I was dying on the Greece stretch
and it's probably way more mountainous than you might think
takes about ~50-70days, but the nicer, less direct route near the Adriatic sea and through greece is ~80-120days

and depending on when you set your mind on this, research again
because the camping situation in most of Europe got considerably worse in the last few years
nowadays I'm rarely below 50€/day for France / Germany / Italy

>is china too hardcore?
eh, not really
just needs a bit more preparation
also china is a bit stingy with visas

for my longer trip I got a student Visa
my university had an exchange program, so it was free, otherwise would've been ~2500€/y (+visa cost)

>routes?
for less popular regions you have to craft them yourself or search for bike travel blogs
through Xinjiang I did (almost) the same route as a bikepacking instagram influencer
no "formal" resources

bikepacking isn't really a thing in China (like it is in Europe)
so most people don't even really know the concept

but you can find lots of day tours between cities in the more popular regions and then stitch them together for a multi day tour

>I want to see farms and panda bears and do tai chi
Sichuan
you want to go to Sichuan
fly into Chengdu and go from there
Air China took my bicycle for like ~200€ extra

incidentally, Sichuan (especially the western parts) is also probably one of the most beautiful regions i've ever been to in the world
with some of the best food in China
and I hope you like mountains though kek

How do you prepare for this in terms of logistics? like, how do you get the bike?
I get it if you start from your home country, but what if you wanna travel far away? Go there by plane and then locally try to find a bike and all amenities? And what upon return, try to sell the bike? How do you deal with a painful butt?
Also, I feel like the countries that I want to visit (Asia) wouldn't really be used to cyclists on the road.

>How do you prepare for this in terms of logistics? like, how do you get the bike?
fly everything in
taking a bicycle as checked baggage, it's usually around 200-300€/way
and for the rest, I rarely have above ~25kg baggage, which is only a mild surplus (overpay) to the typical ~23kg allowed on most airlines
if your destination is within ~2d by train, do that instead

>I get it if you start from your home country, but what if you wanna travel far away? Go there by plane and then locally try to find a bike and all amenities? And what upon return, try to sell the bike?
again ship everything
my touring bike is ~2000€ (equipment another ~3000€)
no way I'm giving that away or dealing with a shitty temporary bicycle

>How do you deal with a painful butt?
lots of training before
don't go on a long multi day tour if you never did the same daily distance on a day tour
typically I'd aim for ~150% in training
so if you want to do ~100km/day, train with 150km day tours before

also padded pants / underwear

>Also, I feel like the countries that I want to visit (Asia) wouldn't really be used to cyclists on the road.
meh it's ok
the much bigger problem are busy roads which you want to avoid
as long as it's empty, other cars / trucks are sensible towards you

also bicycles are used a lot in all parts of Asia, not like people don't know them

??

a very direct route between Lisbon and Istanbul is ~4500km
which is not very nice
with a few sightseeing days, you're looking at ~50days
if yo don't care about seeing anything, you could absolutely do it in 20-30 days
but this is about /bikepacking/ not /bikeracing/

staying near the coast in Portugal, Spain & France and then riding south alongside the Adriatic sea is more like ~6-7000km
again add in a few excursions or detours to see something cool along the way and it's more like ~8000km
which absolutely tracks with 80days+

>how fat are you?
with an e-bike that literally would not make a difference
unless you're a (semi-) professional athlete you won't do 200km+/day consistently
typical bike packing pacing for flats is ~150km/day, for hilly terrain it easily drops below 100km/day
