Tell me Americans, which decade of New York was THE decade of New York?
Was it during the 30's with the Empire State Building?

And were the 70's and 80's the worst decades of New York?

1920s was roaring. That's when everyone and their mother was making money hand over fist on the stock market, people drank like fish at speakeasies, and the Italian mafia was moving from street level to what we know today.

Anyone who says 90's is clearly underage and wasn't there. Highest violent crime rate in the city's history. Huge homelessness and poverty problem. Even worse than it is now. The whole city reeked of piss and uncatted car fumes. Nobody wanted to "be" there except for tourists. Fuck off with your rose-tinted pre-9/11 glasses, the city sucked then and it still sucks today.

1970s were the worst by far. Your Taxi Driver pic is appropriate and correct. The city was filthy, violent, and bankrupt. The best depends on perspective; for safety 2010s. For culture early 1960s. Nightlife 1980s, etc.

Im an American born in the 90s and ive never been to new york or read much about it, so i think im qualified to say that the 40s were prime new york years.

I was stuck on LonGuyLand for work in the early 1990s. A coworker took me into """"""The City""""""" for dinner one night, and when we got back to my car (fortunately a rental) some NYC asshole was pissing on the tire. Like, out in the open on the street, just whizzing away on someone's car because why not.

NYCers are batshit insane for living there. I sincerely hope that """"""""The City"""""""""""" gets nuked so that all the weirdos get incinerated and don't just move somewhere else.

for me, it'll always be the late 90s

flew twice there as a kid (even once on the Concorde)
just something magical about the city at this time
truly felt like the american spirit

though maybe it was just me being ~10yo kek
