The ability to pedal 80 pounds of bicycle and gear up a steep mountain pass at 4000 meters of altitude...or the ability to stay motivated on endless steppe plains devoid of any interesting features. The ability to handle continental weather - extreme heat and cold, fierce sun, strong winds. The ability to be self-sufficient for days at a time, not relying on hotels and restaurants. A willingness to ride alongside dangerous high-speed traffic on narrow rural highways.

that's probably the hardest one for me

did the ~8500km Istanbul to Almaty
and the only time I considered giving up was in Turkmenistan
4 fucking days of nothing

honestly wouldn't do it again

before that tour I mainly cycled through Europe
and the worst I had before were ~100km on road through Russia with only forest left and right
basically anywhere in Europe you have al least SOMETHING interesting every few hours
but the endless steppe in central Asia... puh
