I see I can get a cheap flight to Manchester, maybe I could spend a week there and see Liverpool, Chester is also close by. Lake district probably too far.

Is the area outrageously expensive compared to continental Europe? What would I need to avoid in the area and what would you recommend?

>Is the area outrageously expensive compared to continental Europe?
No, but the tourism 'product' is undoubtedly better in continental Europe unless you have a specific interest, like industrial history, popular music history, or football stadiums. Mancs and Scouse are both quite friendly to strangers, in my experience.

>What would I need to avoid in the area and what would you recommend?
I recommend one of the many local museums dedicated to industrial heritage, but maybe that's just an interest of mine. Both Liverpool and Manchester are pretty nice (or at least, first world) in their centres these days. As you say, Chester is a must. Lake District is not too far away, but you might not get much out of it in such a short time, unless you spend the whole holiday there, which wouldn't be a bad idea. York is a fantastic holiday destination that you can easily get to from Manchester, either to stay or visit. Check out the railway museum while you're there. Manchester also has an excellent transport museum.

Some suburbs of both cities are still very rough. If you're an American then you will be aware of the concept of post-industrial wastelands full of the terminally under-employed, though we also have seething resentful thirdies thrown into the bargain. Also best to avoid the satellite towns of Manchester - Oldham, Bolton, Wigan, etc.

>Manchester
Honestly, not amazing for tourism but there are some things worth seeing.
>Manchester Town Hall
>Mamucium fort
>Manchester Art Gallery
>Manchester Museum
>Science and Industry Museum
If you're interested in football, it's worth seeing Old Trafford - maybe even a game if you can get tickets just to soak up the atmosphere and have some fun. There's also the National Footballing Museum. Maybe some other Brit who knows the city better than me can do it more justice, but my view of it is tainted by terrible work functions.

>Liverpool
Absolutely worth going for tourism
>take a stroll around the Albert Dock
>St. George's Hall, St. John's Gardens, the World Museum, Liverpool Empire Theatre and the Walker Art Gallery a stone's throw from Lime Street Station
>Liverpool ONE if you have a gf that you need to let loose on a shopping centre
>check out the Cavern Club if you're into music history
>chill out around Sefton Park
>go to a live event at Camp & Furnace
>if you're into nightlife, Concert Square is the centre and it's imo the best bar/club scene in the UK (McCooley's irish pub, LEVEL, Baa Bar, Black Rabbit)
>scousers are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet and always very interested in you if you're foreign
>Anfield for football history - same advice as I gave for Manchester applies re:going to a match
>extremely easy to take a bus day trip across the border into Wales to see Conwy
>regular ferries to Dublin if you want to spend a day or two there

t. Brit who lived in Liverpool for about 7 years and worked around both cities

>Is the area outrageously expensive compared to continental Europe?
Manchester is about average (still much cheaper than London), Liverpool is quite cheap, Chester is somewhere in between.
>What would I need to avoid in the area and what would you recommend?
In terms of cities or areas within cities? Avoid pretty much every outlying settlement of Manchester (Stockport, Salford, Bolton etc.) Avoid Toxteth in Liverpool.

premier inn, and travellodge are no frills hotels, but the few i've been to all over uk have been completely adequate. premier a little better than Travelodge (the latter do u need to buy internet? but even if you are on a strict budget its cheaper for an average standardized hotel comfort than other options)
they are not on booking.com
they are not special hotel experiences, but you can get decent locations for a standardized room. or you can get cheap options if you are in an out of the way/off the motorway location.
but peak summer on a weekend in a large city yea they will still seem expensive as they are dynamic pricng

things like easyhotel are literally literally just a bed, small bathroom and room to stand to get dressed. the ones ive been have been fine, the only one i didnt like was in a shit town and that was like someone smoking near an air intake vent was the only complaint

manchester to york almost an hour.
york was probably the comfiest small city you could walk around the old bits and not really stumble upon the urban decay poverty of 21st century uk

Depends on what you mean continental, sure it's more expensive than Albania and Bulgaria, but more or less equal with Germany and France.

I've never been to liverpool, outside footy, beatles, and waterfront shopping i duno whats there.
York is not so far from manchester if you are looking for a 3rd destination for a night or two

If you stay in Chester, you are in reach of Northern Wales.
But, there are many castles in this area. closest is probably Conwy.
Caernarfon is famous, wher e prince of wales (atleast charles) is crowned
Anglesey, wales biggest island. i duno what you do here, there is beaumaris castle. ive walked across the menai bridge that was pretty neat, can get to bangor by train. If you went all the way to bangor, only one train stop further is the longest name meme station llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
Snowdonia isn't too far, wales highest mountain, in warm months u can get a little train up most the way.
If you go way out there is The Welsh RIviera. (i think is a bit tongue in cheek), Llŷn Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. has villages like Tenby.

Just abit south of Chester is Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, now why go jsut to see a bridge i duno, looks neat tho

Outside the cities, maybe a bitch to get to there are historical houses or Grand Houses
Eaton Hall grand estate near chester.
Speke Hall near liverpool
random ones all outisde of manchester Gawsworth Hall Smithhills Hall Samlesbury Hall
Lyme Park
Harewood House
Chatsworth House
Wentworth Woodhouse (near Rotherham!)
Castle Howard

When u know where you go, look up if any national trust sites, or english heritage sites. national trust can have reciprocal memberships with other countries in the world.

Peak district is right next to Manchester and is like a little Lake District. Visit Hope or Bakewell (home of the famous Bakewell tart)

imo Manchester is really not worth seeing but it is an excellent base to visit the north as it is well connected by train. Lots of nice towns and villages in the north and the countryside is beautiful.

Replying to warn op, most the drinking spots mentioned here are fresher infested shiteholes, try the Georgian quarter/Bold Street for decent places (pilgrim, grapes, Tabac). The Beatles museum isn't any good but the Maritime museum is great. Lark Lane and Smithdown are alright if you can accept there's more students than locals. Camp & Furnace and adjacent places are good if there's something on. As long as you're not a retard about who you may ask for directions you'll be helped. The Swan might be worth going if you're into your metal, the Red Lion is also a good boozer to try. Weatherspoons/McCooleys is like the McDonalds of pubs and the company is about as good, maybe get the neverspoons app? I would barely recommend the Cavern either, but given how hot a spot is it's worth going for some pics at the Beatles statue, just be careful not to bump into any Hen do's, they're worse than the students. Ship & Mitre is nearby, as is the Post House and the Corn Market.

Not that anon (I'm the guy he responded to), but he mentioned Bold Street which has some great places. Lark Lane as well (also, I'd say it's nowhere near as bad as smithdown for student infestation), but it's a bit out of your way unless you're coming out of a walk through Sefton Park.

You should be alright as long as you avoid the chain places. Bold Street and Duke Street are decent for food as well as places around Matthew Street. I remember Buyer's Club being alright for pasta and cocktails. I wouldn't suggest Lark Lane/Smithdown since there's even more students there and bussing in foreign countries is stressful enough. Big Bowl is worth a go too, or just China town in general now I think on it
