Does someone have experience living in mainland China as a westerner?

How much money I should expect to spend each month? As a mid level software engineer, is it easy to get a local job? How far do I get with 6 months of language learning? Is it easy to make local friends or date local girls?

I'm also considering Japan if someone has experience how it compares to China.

Nah this >>2793558 is me, and I mock all the hysterical screeching "China bad" idiots in all the generals constantly but OP is better off developing a heroin addiction rather than wanting to work for a Chinese company direct.
The only real route here is getting a MNC job in the west, then getting posted to Shanghai. You'll be treated like a human being and paid well for it.
The whole Chinaboss meme is real.

>Does someone have experience living in
>As a mid level software engineer
mainland China as a westerner?
yeah I worked in Chengdu as well an Shenzhen as European
also as software engineer

but didn't go in as mid level SDE
sold my startup to a chinese company, had a 18month contract afterwards in Shenzhen
then switched to a company in Chengdu

>How much money I should expect to spend each month?
you can get by with 5k/month, but you're gonna be miserable
if you avoid the major T1's you you get a nice apartment for ~5k/month though
food is somewhat cheap, takeout only on dev salaries

traveling is relatively cheap outside the big holidays
most 5* hotels rarely are above 1k/night and business class in trains is awesome

so I'd say about ~30k/month upwards to be /comfy/

>As a mid level software engineer, is it easy to get a local job?
frankly no
unless you have some VERY convincing credentials
like big name University degree, cited research or known companies on your CV
easiest is to get in through a western branch

>How far do I get with 6 months of language learning?
holy KEK
even if you learn 8h/day you'll barely get fluent in basic conversations
something like 2-3y intensive daily learning to be able to reasonably navigate China (well that's what I took)

>Is it easy to make local friends or date local girls?
depends
dating in China is very materialistic / opportunistic for the most part, a house and car is often expected
if you just want to hookup, that's easy as a /fit/ white guy though

China use to employ many foreign software engineers but they have trained many of their own software engineers now so this almost never happened anymore. Shame as it used to be a great gig.

what year? are you a millennitard

i'm a brainrot zoomer and i honestly wish i could've been some millennial in china during that era

like having mastered the language and teaching english on pennies to ride out 2008 or whatever the fuck

but again that probably would've only worked if i was white

and as a cs major we're having our own little 2008 moment nowadays, but that's hardly relevant

first time i went to china ever was when i was 7 and i still have excellent memories of the place, like shit wasn't super cracked down like today. like today everyone says china is literally a techno police state that allows women to walk outside at 3 am while also censoring all avenues of dissent, but when i was a young sperg they didn't even fucking enforce seatbelt laws, and my mom had to fucking warn me to always stay with nai nai or else i could get sold to kidnappers and forced to beg

you know, like in SEA today

SEA is the new "china" (and increasingly less "new" these days)

central asia's probably the new "SEA" atp but now we're getting off topic

Yeah you're watching a lot of propaganda. In general the government doesn't care what you do until it's a street protest. I've political discussions with taxi drivers where they shit talk the government. It's all about walking a fine line.

China also really did have a child kidnapping problem over 15 years ago. It's long gone now. Oddly enough Korea had the same problem 20 or so years ago. The country is extremely safe now. Slums/ghettos don't even exist.

I'm a 1991 Millenial.

ik (read: am a fanboy of) someone (sorta semi famous) who was a national of one of the big 5 anglotard countries but spent most of his life in some inland tier 2 city in china

and yes, including his childhood, he went to some posh international english school

anyways he stuck around china and shit while doing some art stuff... but eventually he became hardcore antichina in like 2019 when some cops tied him to a chair for what ended up being an entire day, to try to get a false confession out of him (his country being the problem), and when he demanded a lawyer they assaulted him

thankfully he made it out in one piece, but he gtfo'd of china asap and never looked back henceforth

fortunately this wasn't anyone i personally knew

I got a job offer (teacher at international school) in Yunnan. At first I was all for it but I have to sign the contract soon and I'm getting cold feet. The pay is amazing but I worry about anti-American sentiment, generally being isolated, ability to navigate Chinese systems, etc. I also have a job lined up in Taiwan but it pays much less. Any suggestions from anons who have been to either? I also posted about this elsewhere so apologies for repost.

I suppose I should mention that I would not be in Taipei. I would probably be in Kaohsiung or Tainan. I have been told there are no foreigners there.
>Wierd reservation to have.
Well, I am American. I'm not some extremely nationalistic person, but I have been told that Chinese people are. Might be an issue as tensions get worse between America and China. I also wouldn't be in an "international city", I would be in a tier 2 city with very few foreigners. That may be a good thing, may be a bad thing. IDK.

I don't hate China, I am neutral to the place because I have never been. My worry is more about how I will be treated longterm living in China as a visibly recognizable foreigner/American in a city that has very few foreigners. When I speak to Chinese people online, they seem like robots. I don't think it's a language issue because Taiwanese people are a lot more friendly. I worry about moving to a country and being unable to make any sort of friendship or connect with the locals and culture.
