So I live in the UK and we have 3 prominent mountains and I have 1 left but the problem is it's 400 miles away (Ben Nevis). A return train journey would cost £210 so I think I'd drive instead but the problem is it'd a be a 7 hour drive! I've now looked into flights and it'd cost me £90 for a return flight from Birmingham to Glasgow and only £35 to £50 to rent a car for 3 days.

So in summary: Return train tickets directly to Fort William which is basically directly to Ben Nevis for £212 and I'd have to change trains at least once. The fastest train journey is 10 hours
Drive directly there. The drive would be 7 hours and it total I'd use about 20 gallons of fuel (£100)
Fly to Glasgow airport (1 hour flight) £90 return and rent a car from the airport for 3 days for £40. Also, I'd have to buy 4 gallons fuel for Glasgow to FW and back so in total it'd also be about £200.
Which option would you choose? I'm tempted to drive but 7 hours driving is so long. I really thought a train journey would be cheaper, y'know since it's public transport but no it's about twice as expensive as driving. fml. Now I'm wondering is it even worth travelling so far just to hike up Ben Nevis. I love mountains but that's a lot of time and money just to visit Ben Nevis even if it's the last item on my bucket list of mountains in the UK.

As an American a 7 hour drive for a big hiking excursion for a few days is totally fine.
Long drives are comfy.
I have to drive 16 hours to get to any cool mountains. Which ive done 3 times.

If my car had cruise control I wouldn't hesitate to do it so much... without cruise control my leg gets a bit uncomfy being stuck in one position for hours

I totally get that. How old is your car for it not to have cruise control?

16 years old now! I plan to use it until the cost of repairs would exceed buying a new car because I really dislike the whole process of buying and selling cars and dealing with car salesmen
