Hostel theft is a problem in Europe. Room doors in Poland have a key lock on both sides, so nobody can reach inside an open window and flip a deadbolt to gain access. Europe definitely has more petty theft problems than countries like Thailand or Taiwan, because thieves are treated with kid gloves here. Bicyclists use robust locks here in Poland; they never leave their bike parked on the sidewalk unsecured as is common in Southeast Asia.
