I'm not religious myself, but a good childhood friend of mine was an evangelical who went to Jordan (I believe illegally) as a missionary and did a lot of time out in the desert with the bedouins. Apparently they will try to kind of ruthlessly take advantage of you at all times and generally treat you with disrespect.
