What's the dealio when it comes to travelling with meds? Looking for answers from Australians, mostly, since I don't know what it's like with other countries.

what meds exactly anon. dunno about straya specifically but been to a few places with pharma products now
most of the time absolutely nothing happens and no one cares, occasionally you might have to produce a prescription but here they stick those onto the packaging anyway so you don't even need to think about it
if you are on something on controlled lists then you might have to get some kind of customs pre clearance to bring it in. plenty of people don't bother and they almost always get away with it, but if you have a problem with this then it'll be an enormous problem for want of five minutes of paperwork the week before
if your drugs need to be kept cold, needs needles (insulin etc) then the little refrigerated packs you get look super sus on x ray. I've seen people get ak47s pointed at them for this. if you have that kind of thing then tell the security guys about it before they scan it
there are still a few countries that treat certain diseases as witchcraft and will be hostile if you try to bring in associated medicines. western countries won't give you any grief about your psychosis pills or whatever but this can be a problem elsewhere

Just tamsulosin. I've still got it in its original box and everything, and there are only 29 tablets in it. I just didn't know if I'd need to do anything before bringing them through the airport or not, since they're pills.

You will have no problems with that, none whatsoever (also hello fellow ancient).
airport staff only care about pills if they contain a controlled substance, which your tablets do not. If you're going to first world countries the very worst thing that can happen is someone asks to see the prescription. In less developed countries you might find the guy asks for a bribe too.

I'm 22, lol. I don't have an enlarged prostate, but they've put me on it for four months just to see if it'll help with my issue.

As an Aussie we assume every border control is as strict as ours but that's nowhere near the truth. In most countries they just wave you through if you've filled out the customs declaration. I've traveled to dozens of places and I've been searched only once in USA, and they didn't even look at meds. I've been searched multiple times returning to Australia though. The rest of the world just isn't as nazi about customs as we are

Did you need to bring a prescription or a note from your doctor or anything? Or can I just chuck them in my carry on and go about my business?

not that anon, however its more of a safety net to have a print out of your list or a doctors note just in case they do question it. have it ready on hand or in one of the pockets if asked why you have the prescription. should be no issues afaik.

In the USA it is not required you have the actual prescription with you, it's just recommended if it's a scheduled substance. Tamsulosin is just an alpha blocker, the same general realm as blood pressure medication. You're acting like you're trying to travel with quaaludes, codeine, and vicodin. No one is going to care about your prostate pills dude.

if this is your first time travelling with tablets then really don't worry about it. only if your destination places your medicine on certain lists will you need to do anything and most of the time it is just filing in a health agency form to get import permissions or something like that
do check first though. you sometimes find weird things on the lists. like a boring over the counter painkiller here is outright banned in some MENA countries, as the occasional hapless tourist finds out when he gets arrested at the border

I had a condition that I had to travel with tonnes of supplements, like a giant ziplock bag full of magnesium pills that could have easily been drugs

I was surprised that no one anywhere bothered me at all about them. Just keep them in the bottle and yuo likely won't be bothered anywhere at all about them.

The golden rule about travel I've discovered is that its not as much about what you're bringing in as it is about your appearance. Everyone just jumps to race but its not only that. It's also how your dressed and what your vibe is. So I always make sure to dress up nearly semi-formal whenever I travel and never have any fuss at security.

oh and sorry my post made it look like the pills were directly in the ziplock. No this would be stupid. I mean several bottles of supplements in a bag.
