What am in for? Im planning to travel to the US to stay at my aunts place for the summer but my mom and the redditors keep saying that immigration is really strict now under Trump and i'll get detained and imprisoned at the border. I'm a 38 yr old neet btw but im starting to get my life back on track, not sure if that matters. is really a bad idea to travel to the US in these troubled times?

Don't tell the redditors but if you have your documentation and enter legally without contraband you're not likely to have any issues, especially if you're a white Canadian and not an Indian national squatting there on a questionable visa.

its a nothing burger. All those articles about people who got detained for no reason are people who tried to do something illegal like enter from a different border and get refused. O

Don't bring a burner phone or anything like that. That just makes you look more sus. Other anon is right. Its a lot of "Canadians" who are getting turned back. in effect nothing has changed the US border has always been sorta hardass but you're gonna be fine. Try not to wear clothes with tonnes of pockets when crossing.

Dress well. Don't wear dirty sweats and a hoody. Dressing like shit is what would get me constantly stopped and it took years to realize.

You might actually have more trouble with the Canadian border guards going home than the US ones

they ask completely normal questions that feel invasive and like you're in trouble like where are you going, why, who are you visiting

Redditors are retarded. Dress and act at any border crossing like you would for a job interview because, in essence, that's what you're doing. The border agent is trying to sus out whether or not you're just a canadian or a "canadian" smuggling chinese fentanyl across the border. While doing it quickly because Canadian and Mexican land crossings are some of the busiest in the world. Have your passport, info about where you're staying, and expect at least a quick car/bag search. No real canadian tourists are getting "detained," if they are I bet it's only temporary if they're missing documents. The US will literally do the same thing to US citizens if they don't have a passport or customs forms ready to present.

As long as you wear a yarmulke and exclaim "Oy veh gevalt! Is this anudda shoah?!" when the border Customs agent demands your passport, you'll be fine.
