Anyone live there, been there? I'll be passing through in a couple months. What do you recommend? How's the altitude sickness was it killer? Food, drink, interesting souvenirs? Going to guess that Spanish is a necessity? Lay it on me.

Why are you going there? Road trip or something? La Paz is the worst Bolivian city but it's so bad that it becomes awe inspiring.

Sucre and Santa Cruz are really comfy

I'm starting much further south, I figure I will take the long way home. Instead of flying in and out of a South America, the plan is to pass through a few countries and cities and get some vacation time in. And La Paz seems like a fun place because of the cable cars. I'll do a some research on Sucre and Santa Cruz; but whats there? Better food? better sights? My plan is to go through Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador or Columbia, maybe try to stop by Mexico city.

La Paz is a spectacle that is every bit as striking as other much more beautiful, much better known cities like San Francisco, Rio, Wellington & Cape Town. There’s plenty of cool adventure tourism stuff you can use La Paz as a launching point for, but the city itself is a bit of a dry well in terms of things to do. Riding the cable car for me was an all-day event that didn’t lose its luster no matter how many times I rode it. Your mileage may vary, I can get a little autism over things like that.

Sucre is a gem. And if you’re on a long trip through this part of the world will come as a respite. Its calm, beautiful (though not awe inducing like La Paz) and the hub of Bolivian upper class culture.

I was in your situation and burned out from Indios, filth and feeling like I was gonna get murdered, after mexico, Panama , El Salvador, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay, skipped Bolivia cuz shithole, spent a few weeks in Miraflores lima Peru, that was very nice and skipped Ecuador and Columbia because it seemed like violent shit holes. Mexico City has nice areas

danger = fun
I feel obligated here, most my friends travel to places that are horribly boring. Come back with stories of sitting in a resort, drinking on a beach, or visiting large western european cities.

Guess it's the contrarian in me, but i need to go places my friends circle would never travel to.
