Bros, this is one of the greatest cities on earth, please talk about your experiences here.
I was amazed at just how huge it was and how much there was to do. I visited in winter and the city was beautiful in the snow.
If you haven't been, I highly recommend it to any world traveler.

Yeah that's worth it. Bratislava is quite small, I did it as a day trip from Vienna by taking a scenic ferry in the Danube.

I spent two weeks based in Budapest and visiting Belgrade, Bratislava, and Vienna.
They were all so great. Budapest was maybe the golden mean but depends what you want. It was cheaper than Vienna but fancier than Belgrade.
My suggestion would be. To eat at sit in local restaurants. They have a wide variety of food, food carts, etc. But the best and cheapest food was in actual proper restaurants, especially serving traditional food.

Also, I agree with your suggestion, pic-related is a breakfast I had in a cafe in Budapest, it was wonderful. The cafe was very small and cozy.

Have you tried the traditional dishes like goulash and paprikash? Those are great
Belgrade is different in that it's not really a touristy international city. It's basically just a capital for the Serbs. It's comparatively run down in a post soviet way. If you're looking for muh authenticity it's better but there isn't as much to do. I still liked it though

i'm happy to withdraw my previous comment on vienna, i love that city, but budapest is way more fun for young people i believe.
but i love to go to vienna for the museums for example.

i think the whole truth is:
budapest, vienna: 4-5 days each
prague: 2 days
bratislava, ljubljana, belgrade: 1 day

I agree with this. You are right that Vienna has zero nightlife, I guess I got lucky that I stayed in a good hostel and found a good group of friends to drink with at night and roam the city.
There's enough to do during the day to keep any history buff occupied though

Hungarians aren’t very friendly. A lot of the city is drab. The only impressive structure is the parliament building. The ruin bars are underwhelming. The thermal baths are cool, but honestly, they're just swimming pools. I found the city mid but every normie will tell me there’s nowhere better.

Just got back from Budapest, spent a weekend there (fri to mon) and my god is it one of my favorite cities after Bordeaux. I struggled to get my barings of north and south for a while but after that, it was easy to navigate through this wonderful city, with Donau as a guiding-pin.

The castle district absolutely shocked me when I discovered there was a whole city up there and not just a, well, castle.

Would recomend going on a cruise on the Donau and see the spectacular buildings along the riverside, especially the parlament.

Good food and drinks all around, allthough abit expensive from what I thought it would be, we once spent 50k HUF (3 people, 150 EUR) at a steakhouse close to St. Stephen's Basilica, tourist trap, I know.

All around, would recomend.

Belgrade is intense and insane. Maybe it's because my card got swallowed by an ATM as soon as I arrived, because there are protests in Serbia right now and I was lucky to find an hostel tended by nice Russians but I didn't get such a bustling vibe in any other city. It's chaotic but people are friendly despite their frowning Slav faces. Talking about politics with Serbs is a fascinating experience. There are quite a few alternative places to party for cheap, and everyone speaks perfect English. There is a spot to swim at Ada Ciganlija, and the city buses are free. I'm honestly considering moving there, or at the very least coming back for a few weeks later this year.

>What exactly happened?
Basically I was in Albania, considered going to the Montenegro coastline for a bit, but finally decided to go directly to Belgrade from Podgorica with a night train, so I essentially crossed two borders in one day. It was an old train, the staff was a bit autistic but rather friendly, and I kept drinking beers to try to fall asleep easier.

I arrived in the morning at Beograd Central, was kinda distracted, withdrew some cash, and I think what happened is that they give you the cash first, then the card back, while in most other countries, they give you the card back first, then the cash. But maybe the ATM just didn't give me my card back, I don't know it's a blur really.
Anyway, I went to the city center, bought stuff at a supermarket, and at this point I realized I had no more card.

So I took a bus back to the station (of course, the first bus I took got me to Novi Beograd instead of the train station), the staff there told me to call the bank in charge of the ATM, talk to the cops who weren't there or to fuck off. But at least there were power plugs and free wifi.
The bank confirmed my card was inside, told me they open the ATM two times a week, but wouldn't tell me when for security reasons.
So I called my domestic bank, I cancelled the card, and they told me I could get either emergency cash, or an emergency card. I chose the emergency card. Someone from VISA called me that night to ask a bunch of questions, band it got delivered to my hostel 48h later.

It's a magnetic stripe only debit card, I can't buy stuff on the internet with it or use ATMs. So to get cash I send money to myself with Western Union, and I ask my family to book FlixBus tickets for me.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

The problems of summer in Serbia/Balkans are the heatwaves, I was in Novi Sad for a couple of days, and I didn't manage to go to the fortress, the biggest of Europe I've heard, because it was 36°C out there and humid af.
Belgrade is a bit better because there is some wind, but basically there is a good part of the day where it's hard to do anything except chilling out under a tree because of the heat. Last year I travelled to the Baltic states for this reason, but the Balkans are more fun and I didn't expect to stay so long there. Thank god I'm finally a NEET with a bit of money.

>>2799813
Like I said, smarty pants, I was distracted.
After one month visiting a good chunk of Northern Albania, initially with a friend then splitting up, being stuck in a pretty shitty city full of stray dogs for days, deciding to go to Belgrade on a whim after Shkodër, and being a bit drunk after many beers on arrival, at the time I was thinking about how it was a great opportunity to practice the Cyrillic alphabet, about all the Russian girls I would meet, and where to take the bus to go to my hostel. I didn't think about my bank card. This is a life lesson I surely won't forget.

I spent 3 nights in Budapest and loved it. I found it really easy to meet locals and made some friends that I still keep in touch with.

The architecture is amazing. It's a great city to just wander around aimlessly. We did some hikes. The food was decent. It felt very safe at night. It was 97 percent white. The bars are great. Would I go again? Definitely. It's absolutely a worthwhile place to visit. But is it as worthwhile as Rome, Prague or Madrid? No. It doesn't have the culture or the food to compare to those cities.

Prague has the literal best beer on earth and it's like $1.50 for a glass everywhere. The cuisine is really fresh and rustic. The pork knee, duck, sausages, soups, wood fired grills....flawless. There are fantastic pastry shops too. I got hooked on the kronuts. I was shocked at how good the food was in Prague. Every meal I had in Prague was amazing. Look up Klášterní šenk on google photos and just go through the photos of the food. Right up my alley.

The food in Budapest is ok. Not great. The liquor they make is bad. There's a reason Palinka and Unicum aren't popular outside of Hungary. The Museums we did in Budapest weren't nearly as good as the ones in Prague. The Czech National Gallery is HUGE. We got to see the Slav epic in Prague. Mucha locked himself in a barn and worked on it for like 18 years. The architecture in Budapest is probably better. The Hungarian parliament building is on of the coolest buildings I've ever seen, but Prague is just a prettier city on the whole.

I can see Vienna being a bummer of you were on a budget. You cross over from Czech where you can go out and drink 10 beers for $15 and suddenly you're paying $6 for one beer or $12 for a cocktail. Food is about double and half as good in Vienna. And there aren't many deals for hotels or Airbnbs in Vienna. The nightlife is nowhere close to Prague. But Vienna is is pretty amazing for walking around and seeing beautiful architecture and museums. The big park down on the river is great if you're into biking. There's a lot of college aged kids out near the university in Vienna if you go in September. 2 days is plenty to do most of the good stuff.

Why are European cities like this? I'm so done with these gay historic centers and their price gouging.

Seconded. Budapest is great, Prague is small and not as dynamic, and Vienna never been i've been told it's boring.
