It's not like Spain or Greece where tourists are pricing them out of houses and restaurants while crowding them out of beaches and other national treasures. 90% of Mexican tourists go to walled off resorts and never set a foot inside the actual country while paying the employees more in a week than they'd make in months. In Oaxaca centro I noticed the contrast between the tall, graceful European neocolonizers and the short, homely indigenous oaxaqueños who filled all of the service roles. Oaxaca's economy is hyper reliant on tourism, so the natives are taught to be friendly, but you can't help wondering what they really think of you. A guy attacked my van after he pulled into a roadside parking space and then manuevered his trike out into the traffic lane, where the canopy frame clipped my mirror. How quickly he became violent made it clear to me how much resentment of white privilege hides beneath the supposed friendliness of the Mexican people.
