I'm going backpacking throughout all of Eastern Europe in a month, going to stay there for ~51 days. Are there any international sim card providers that support nearly all of eastern europe (atleast the ones in the EU & North Macedonia)

Looked online and it seems like all of the "travel" focused sim card providers are completely price gouging or there's little to no information on them, assumed that there would be a reddit-esque infographic online for all the international data providers but sadly there seems to be nothing of the sort.

tl;dr: recommend international eastern european phone data providers

I think any sim you buy in an EU country will work in all of them, but I don't think North Macedonia. Airalo global esim isn't the cheapest but is better than buying a new sim in each country and the convenience of automatically working wherever you land is great. They might have a Europe plan that includes non-EU that's cheaper, I'm not sure

you know that
>free roaming within EU
you can just get any prepaid discounter sim and recharge when needed

just keep in mind the
>fair use policy
they might block your sim after ~30days of consecutive roaming
or they might not
usually it's most like 90 days so your 52 days are covered

i wouldn't mind buying a separate esim plan for ~4 days just for north macedonia

you can check coverage maps
but with roaming kinda hard to find out for all countries and cities generally will be fine

otherwise just pick the one where you'll get the most Data volume / speed
definitely check the fineprint for roaming volume as well
some providers are very stingy about that

in which country do you start?

b-but I want to shitpost on /trv/

sometimes you really do need data though
like for public transport tickets / uber / rental bikes or scooter etc.

Buying last-minute transport tickets is iffy, all the spots might be reserved if you wait too long. When you buy ahead of time, you can access your tickets offline. The biggest hassle for me is properties which require a phone call to check in, because they forgot to send the entry codes the morning of arrival. I've had to buy international calling credits on Talkatone to make a call, then find an open WiFi connection (not always easy).

>Buying last-minute transport tickets is iffy
only for high speed trains and long distance buses
regular metro, bus or whatever tickets are completely fine buying just in time
sometimes you can buy them online, sometimes long before, but not everywhere nor every time

>public wifi
is fine for regular browsing
but usually too insecure for banking / sensitive applications

>buy international calling credits on Talkatone
ah, good times when I had (unlimited?) international minutes on skype through my company

restaurant reservation often need a call or number as well

again
it's not like you can't survive without a local sim (with exceptions like China, absolutely impossible)
but it's inconvenient
so inconvenient that the ~30€/month of vacation are worth it for me

I'm starting in italy, I should've updated the OP to clarify that I'm actually leaving in less than a week and not a month as I originally posted this thread in /int/ a month ago.
>you can check coverage maps
Didn't consider this at all, thanks anon. How do you feel about those providers that advertise themselves to tourists such as Saily (nord-slop but the pricing seems surprisingly alright)
>>2800951
I'll be purchasing hotels/hostel rooms on the fly on my phone, I've already booked the first one in Italy and I certainly wouldn't have gotten the room if I didn't book it a week in advance (peak tourism season)

Anyone have experience using Saily or its competitors? Planning on getting a few gigs of data for booking train tickets and the sorts. Do they work as intended? I just need data for WhatsApp on shit like that.

>starting in italy
well italy is quite cheap for data
~15€ for 30days and 100GB+ depending on network
but also probably only ~10GB for roaming rest of EU
and price won't go much lower because of activation fees

>How do you feel about those providers that advertise themselves to tourists such as Saily
if you are a more anxious traveler
or local laws prevent foreigners from getting sim cards
these are great and the most low effort option

but otherwise expensive
it usually takes <30min to get a sim card for less in the destination country

In the smaller towns there are often no kiosks or ticket windows at the train or bus station. Buying tickets online is the only option.

Yeah, the inconvenience is real. Properties which refuse to send me the entry codes the morning of arrival get on my nerves. I'd much rather jot the codes down before leaving the hotel WiFi, but the property insists on sending them no earlier than 13:55 for a 14:00 check-in.

Bullshit response
The only phone stores I saw in Poland were Trash-Mobile stores. Might as well use roaming data from your Trash-Mobile account back home.
