Hi everyone. I've planned a full week in Japan from August 31st to September 7th dedicated to hiking the Kumano Kodo Trail.

I've been to Japan several times before. This time I'm going for the nature and sense of adventure. I'll spend most of the time in the Kii Peninsula, starting in Tanabe and ending in Nachi/Katsuura. I'll spend an extra night in Katsuura so I can catch Nachi Falls early in the morning, and hopefully if there's time travel up the coastline to Kumano itself.

I'm planning to visit all three of the grand shrines (Kumano Sanzen), and I have bookings throughout the journey already reserved.

Since I'm going at the end of August/beginning September, I'm taking my time and going at a leisurely pace of 4 days on the trail itself. I'm pretty fit, but I hear horror stories of the weather at this time. I know it's a well worn and developed trail, and I will be near the coast and in the mountains, so perhaps I don't need to worry too much, but I'm still doing it solo, and I really want to absorb the experience.

Anyways, I'm wondering if any one has experience on the trail, or just general tips for traveling the area. Perhaps some suggestions for the Kii-Peninsula?

Appreciate your input!!

I've only been to Koyasan, which was very pleasant. Otherwise no input - only to ask that you post pics when you get back, I'd love to do something similar. Best of luck anon.

What did you do there? I have some downtime and had considered visiting or staying a night in Koyasan.

Sadly by the time I got organised the temple stays were all booked out - get in early! I did a day trip from Osaka instead.
I mostly just walked around the town, saw some beautiful temples, and of course the famous cemetery which is the largest in Japan. Everything is calm and pleasant.
The only specific advice I could give is try goma sushi, its somewhat unique to the area - tofu made from sesame - it was delicious, strong recommend.

I don't know why I typed that - goma tofu, not sushi.

Yeah I think it's probably already too late, plus the prices of a temple stay have almost doubled since I last considered Koyasan in 2019.

Goma tofu - thanks for the tip!
