Im going to Iceland in September. Are the places that I have to visit or to completely ignore because they are overrated. Also tips and tricks are welcome for offroading/ crossing water.

you can drive a 4x4 on f-roads, if you consider that to be offroading, but going truly offroad is strictly prohibited.
i drove f35 north to south. it's like climbing mt fuji-- a wise man does it once, but a fool does it twice. hveravellir was an incredible stop, and the views all along the drive are insane. watching the landscape change from rolling green to like.... desolate mars with a hot spring stop in between was a worthwhile journey.

Golden circle is stunning, but be prepared for literal boatloads of tourists getting bussed in from the cruise ships. The entire country has beautiful sights worth seeing. You can go for a drive anywhere and just follow any of the landmark signs and you'll see something amazing.
Don't feel that you need to do the ring road. Pick 1 or 2 places as a base and stay there for a while and do things in the surrounding area.
Gas stations are everywhere, other services not so much.

If you pull into the waterfall parking lots make sure you pay through the app on your phone. They photograph license plates and you WILL pay one way or the other.
