eat at an overpriced tourist trap

God I love European city design. Literally in just one of those blocks you could live your entire life. Corner store for all your food and item needs. easily houses up to 1000+ people which means you can easily date around and find the one without having to go more than 10 minutes from home and it's cheap

You make it sound like Europeans are sedentary lardsacks who never leave their 15 minute enclosure. No, they go bicycling across the city every day off, or take the train somewhere.

keep your hands in your pocket the whole time so your wallet stays put.

I visited Madrid and Barcelona in the early 2000s and there was some big green park maybe somewhere in between the two we visited - no idea the name - but I just remember it being unearthly beautiful but haven't been able to find out where exactly it was or what it was called

I think we visited a bunch of cities in Spain and it was fine except for Barcelona which was disneyworld and unsafe - nice beach though.

Comfy > Tourist trap hell:

Casa Milá > Casa Batlló
La Mar Bella > La Barceloneta
El Born > Barri Gotic
Poble Nou > La Rambla

>go bar hopping in El Born
>go down to the beach to watch sexy girls in bikinis while enjoying a cold can of Estrella
>cool monasteries and basilicas everywhere
>surprisingly good gelato
If it wasnt for the anarchists, gypsies and nafris Barça would be paradise. But I guess if you want a more laid back version of that just take a train to Tarragona where you can do basically the same shit for half the price and the girls are usually younger, hotter and not brown.

Was there in September and saw all these places. it might have been just because it was low tourist season but out of them the only 3 sights that were straight up ruined by over tourism were the rambla, batllo and guell
Batllo is probably worth it if you find a quite time to go
Rambla is a total waste of time busy or not
Guell is a skip because it’s just straight up not a well designed park (it’s was not designed to be one)
Barcelona owns. Never felt uncomfortable while I was there. I saw 1 anti tourist graffiti tag and a handful of stickers pasted on traffic signs. That’s it.

Decided to come here in 2020 just before COVID. Didn’t get the appeal. Out of everywhere I travelled it was by far the least interesting, least appealing, most tourist trappy place I had visited.

Due to a weird mix of circumstances, I ended up returning. Then again. Then again. I started to learn the city better, know the local spots, understand the appeal of the place more and more as time went on. I got invited to parties. Meeting ALL sorts of people that I’d would’ve never interacted with before, who were open, interesting and most importantly accepting and fun.

I became obsessed with this city and ended up dropping everything back home. I’ve now lived in Barcelona for years. Don’t plan on moving any time soon.

When you visit BCN, you need to dedicate some time to each neighbourhood. It’s a relatively small city but it’s ridiculously densely packed.

Find random local bars. Local clubs. Local restaurants. The amount of quality in BCN is astounding once you move past the tourist-traps and commercial nonsense.

I’ve been to 100+ cities easily. BCN is at this stage for me my favourite city on earth and it unironically feels a blessing to be able to live here.

Happy to answer any specific questions

I basically just want to move to Spain at this point. I lived in Portugal and loved it but it has no economy and when I did the camino I like Spain better. Can anyone advise? I wouldn't live in the big cities. I'm thinking Bilbao or somewhere in Galicia would be nice. Money is no issue, just need visa (leaf with lots of education in science/engineering).

A week is definitely enough.

The city itself is geographically small, so it honestly doesn’t matter where you stay. Best way to get around is via bike, you can cross the city in like 40 minutes fairly easily. Plus the grid pattern of the place makes getting around super easy no matter where you are.

In terms of my personal recommendations of where to stay, it depends on what you’re after. Every neighbourhood IMO has its pros and cons.

You’ve got super central spots like Barri Gòtic. Can be beautiful, also can be sketchy at night, lots of bars and very noisy at night.

If you want the same, just less sketchy, stay in Born. If you don’t mind sketchy and want central but affordable, stay in Raval.

If you want elegance, space, but less excitement after say 12pm (unless you’re gay and also like gay cocktail bars) stay in Eixample.

My true recommendation if I had to give one though would be either San Antoni or Poblenou. Close enough to everything but also very nice neighbourhoods without too much chaos in either.
