I'm going here on a work trip in a couple days; what should I know about French Guiana and how do I survive?

They guyanas are basically three Caribbean islands. Imagine a place like aruba where there's one big city in some more rural-y areas around it. You will only ever go to the capital cities for the most part. The interior is so annoying to get to it muight as well be considered another country. The other coastal cities are very boring to go to.

So, assuming you're not there for adventure tourism but just for a business trip just have a hotel in a good area in Cayenne if they didn't arrange one for you.

If youre a tech fag going to Kourou you probably don't even need to worry about that. No Uber so ask your company for trusted taxi service you can use while there if you'll be needing it. If you rent a car in Cayenne leave it EMPTY if street parking or at least nothing visible. Cayenne gets shady at night.

Considering literally no one ever talks about it, even when talking about South America, it must be a pretty bad shithole

Guyana, Suriname, French Guyana, and parts of Venezuela and Brazil make up a geological area called the 'Guiana Shield', which is basically old as fuck rock .
As such, there's lots of interesting geographical features around where the shield meets the Amazonian Basin, including some of the world's most impressive waterfalls.

If you look at picrel, you'll basically see that the region is similar to the west coast of Africa, where European powers carved out a piece each. It's basically:
>Spanish Guyana (Venezuela)
>British Guyana (Guyana)
>Dutch Guyana (Suriname)
>French Guyana
>Portuguese Guyana (Amapa State, Brazil)

I know it's not French Guyana, but there's a kino as fuck area in Brazil nearby called Raposa Serra do Sol, which is a huge indigineous area with insane geography (i.e. not just infinite jungleslop).

French Guyana is home to 'Salvation Island' which was where France had notiriously harsh prison camps. The film Papillon (1973) is set here and is absolute fucking kino.

Not really helpful shit, but hopefully helps paint a little picture of the region.
