My Fil-Am online correspondent who's been to Dubai a couple of times says it has more cultural diversity than one might expect thanks to all the migrant workers from S and SE Asia who form like almost 60% of the country's resident population, especially in the older, less well-known parts of the city.

He tells me although the UAE's migrant worker system is frequently criticized as exploitative, for many of those workers even an overworked, underpaid, and mistreated stint in Dubai can provide a much better life and more opportunity than whatever impoverished region of India and Pakistan they hail from.

And for many in those countries it's much easier and cheaper to try things out in the UAE than in better-developed places like the US, Canada, or even the EU. Just obey all the rules, don't screw up, and try not to die, and they'll be fine. And they get to bring some of their own cultural exports (e.g. food) to Dubai, etc.

Could anyone who's actually been there (or is there) perhaps corroborate? Said correspondent... let's just say he's had a modest track record of (mildly) pushing certain libright political agendas here and there. And from what I've been told, "Dubai is a parody of the 21st century".

Middle Eastern cities boomed from a desert wasteland overnight (from a human history perspective). They feel very artificial, but they are prosperous, industrious and far more orderly than the Third World. One could argue they are the pinnacle of non-white civilization. The Arabs are a privileged class who can say and do as they please. Everyone else, including white visitors, is more or less on the same footing.

The environment is utter ass. Apart from the beaches, it's nothing but a big sandbox. Utterly unfit for the White forest appreciator.

Sharjah is full of thousands of little shops run by all sorts of mystery meat. The human environment is definitely interesting to see. Air conditioning is not a priority for migrant workers, and you'd be surprised how many people are out exercising in 36 C evening temperatures. On street level, everyone respects each other regardless of skin color. Enforced sobriety and celibacy mean that workers devote their entire attention to industry. Work, eat, sleep, amass wealth. Hell, I live the same way, but in a more pleasant environment and with easygoing taskmasters.

In many ways, it is a simulation of modernity, optimized for spectacle, not necessarily substance or sustainability.

The Burj Khalifa not having sewers and needing a whole army of poop trucks removing the waste every day is an insane factoid I wasn't ready for.

What a shithole.

Yeah, using millions of gallons of drinkable water to flush shit into the waterways is clearly the superior alternative

Go to Sharjah then. There are hotels in the $25 price range. A huge variety of ethnic foods for great prices. Lively streets, 90% male tho. Air Arabia offers cheap flight connections through SHJ. I'd absolutely choose the long layover option and spend a night there again.

I smelled shit all over Istanbul and other Turd World countries with shitty sewer systems. Even downtown Denver smells like sewage...but I didn't smell any shit in Sharjah. Who fucking cares if poop trucks have to empty septic tanks.
