My Fil-Am online correspondent who's been to Dubai a couple of times says it has more cultural diversity than one might expect thanks to all the migrant workers from S and SE Asia who form like almost 60% of the country's resident population, especially in the older, less well-known parts of the city.
He tells me although the UAE's migrant worker system is frequently criticized as exploitative, for many of those workers even an overworked, underpaid, and mistreated stint in Dubai can provide a much better life and more opportunity than whatever impoverished region of India and Pakistan they hail from.
And for many in those countries it's much easier and cheaper to try things out in the UAE than in better-developed places like the US, Canada, or even the EU. Just obey all the rules, don't screw up, and try not to die, and they'll be fine. And they get to bring some of their own cultural exports (e.g. food) to Dubai, etc.
Could anyone who's actually been there (or is there) perhaps corroborate? Said correspondent... let's just say he's had a modest track record of (mildly) pushing certain libright political agendas here and there. And from what I've been told, "Dubai is a parody of the 21st century".
